ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

THERE GOES THE SUN The first performer at the three-day 1969 Woodstock Festival, folk singer and guitarist Richie Havens, dies of heart attack at 72 on Monday, April 22, 2013. Originally, Havens is to go on fifth but is bumped up because of travel delays. Michael Lang, Woodstock Festival producer, says in his book The Road to Woodstock that he chooses Havens because of his calm but powerful demeanor. Richie’s performance lasts for over an hour because the next acts have not yet arrived. In an interview with NPR, Havens sighs: So I’d go back and sing three more. This happened six times. So I sung every song I knew. Richie’s website mentions that he has kidney surgery in 2010 but he never fully recovers. Richie Havens’ biggest hit record is Here Comes the Sun (#16-1971).

TRIPLE NEWS EVENTS WREAK HAVOC ON DALLAS, TX RADIO The Boston, MA terrorist bombings last week combine with an arrest in the murder case of a District Attorney and his wife in nearby Kaufman County, TX plus the deadly explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, TX are major breaking news stories that deploy an almost military-like arsenal of news and human resources for top news radio outlets WBAP-820 and KLIF-570. Tyler Cox PD/OM of NewsTalk WBAP-820 Ft. Worth & News & Information KLIF-570 Dallas tells NTS MediaOnline: We began platooning our reporters with overlapping shifts so our coverage never lapsed. CLASSIC ROCK RETURNS TO JERSEY SHORE On July 4, 1976 Top 40 WJRZ FM (100.1) debuts in Manahawkin, NJ. WJRZ FM keeps its CHR/Hot AC format until it flips to Classic Hits in 1992, but soon WJRZ switches back to CHR. In December 1998, WJRZ flips to Country as Jersey Shore Country. Its Country format has a mixed reaction and fails to attract enough listeners to survive. In June 2000, WJRZ FM catapults to Oldies as Oldies 100. In 2002, its ownership changes to Greater Media. WJRZ FM eases out of Oldies 100 to re-brand as WJRZ FM The Greatest Hits Of the 60’s & 70’s. In early 2008, its logo switches to Jersey’s Greatest Hits. On Monday, April 22, 2013 to complete its radio merry-go-round, WJRZ FM returns to Classic Hits.

MYSTERIOUS LIGHTS SPOTTED OVER TAMPA, FL While out walking his dog, WFLA TV CH8 Meteorologist Brooks Garner takes pictures of unexplained lights flying in what appears to be formation over the skies of Tampa. Garner tells TVSpy: What was it? I can’t say for sure. I speculate it was of a very ‘terrestrial’ origin – probably Chinese floating lanterns – but I was too far away to be sure. Can his observation of those sinister sightings be the reason that the wide-eyed meteorologist flees WFLA TV in Tampa, FL for Houston, TX affiliate KHOU TV CBS CH11 in May 2013? Space City offers many bizarre big top spectaculars for Brooks to behold. Just ask our buddy former long time KTRK TV CH13 weather guy Ed Brandon because he is an eye witness to Houston’s history in the making.

LYNN WOOLLEY [KRLD-KTEM-KNOW-KUT] (Waco-Temple, TX) Subject: Don Couser. Jim, When I was growing up, I haunted the two downtown record shops in Temple: The Disc Shop and “The House of Sound” owned by two deejays, Gaylon Christie and Bill Harrell. Radio stations from all over Texas would send stacks of their surveys to the stores. I always picked them up and I kept many of them. I have one in near-mint condition from the week of Sept. 7, 1963 featuring “San Antonio’s Seven Good Guys.” The number 1 song at KONO was “Blue Velvet” by Bobby VInton. The Seven Good Guys were: Howard Edwards – AM drive, B. Marc Sommers – Late morning, Jerry Miller – noon- 3pm, Don Couser – 3pm-6pm, Don Green – early evening, Mike Scott – 9pm-midnight, Al Newman, Jr. all nights. If you have a copy of my book “The Last Great days of Radio” the survey is reproduced on page 14. I never met Don Couser, but have always known of him because of this survey. My condolences to his family. Lynn (www.BeLogical.com)

JIM GOUGH [‘Mr. Texas’-movie actor-voice actor] (Austin-Liberty Hill, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1192) April 22, 2013 [Monday] Jim…I remember well that the album “The Texas Playboys for the Last Time” was released in 1973. Wills had suffered a couple of bad strokes and had to be wheeled into the session in a wheelchair. He could hardly do his famous ‘ah-ha”. He passed away shortly thereafter. Not many of the original Playboys are still with us. Herb Remington still plays but the great Johnny Gimble is in pretty bad shape. Jim Gough

TRIVIA ANSWER: When The Beatles discover that fellow UK band Family has an LP on the market with a similar title, Music in a Doll’s House, they scrap the title of their ninth album, A Doll’s House. After a few design problems, The Beatles’ double disc issues inside just a plain white jacket with the words The Beatles. Fans begin to call it The White Album. Paul McCartney remembers: That was the tension album. We were all in the midst of that psychedelic thing, or just coming out of it. In any case, it was weird. There was a lot of friction during that album. We were just about to break up, and that was tense in itself. Cult leader Charles Manson uses the term Helter Skelter from the LP’s song of the same name to persuade members of his family to in his mind justify the mass murder of 26-year-old movie actress Sharon Tate and her entourage on August 9, 1969 in her husband movie director Roman Polanski’s rented home on Cielo Drive in Benedict Canyon, CA. The Beatles White Album is also their first recording following the death of their manager Brian Epstein on August 27, 1967. The two-pocket vinyl record goes on to become The Beatles best selling album ever with over 20 million in sales.

GEORGE SCHANK [KSBJ FM engineer] (Houston-Conroe, TX) Subject: Beaumont radio. I’d like to invite Henry LaRocca to contact me. Robert X Brown was my first GM/PD at KNRO in Conroe.
