EVELYN PATE ALLEN [former late KLIF-1190 mobile news reporter Sam Pate’s sister] (Kemp, TX) Subject: Joan Pate. Jim, Joan told about all the children Mother taught; but failed to say see it was underprivileged ones. She also made it possible to get instruments at cost, sometimes out of her own pocket. Mother and myself were in Chicago when we went to see Welcome Travelers. Mom didn’t want to stay and tell her story; but I insisted until she did to shut me up. About three weeks later she received the call, then she and my dad went back to Chicago for her to be on the program. Some where in tons of pictures I have the picture of her with the vibra harp in The old Dallas Times Herald Sam had and Joan has the same gift of playing a number of instruments. Me? I’m a good cook. Evelyn Pate Allen; Cedar Creek Lake TX

DUKE GILLELAND [Bob Wills Western Swing chat board] (Belton, TX) Subject: New KTON In Temple… Jim, I remember the night they put Bob in the CMA Hall of Fame in ’68. I saw my Daddy get on the edge of his chair and he said’ “Damn, I thought he was dead”! I looked at him and asked who is he? He told me a few of the highlights as you have done here. A few weeks later while out at Globe(Houston’s then day wallyworld) he urged me to buy a Wills album. From that day on, my music world was never the same. Bob & Western Swing went to the top and still reign there today! Just ask our good friend Larry Scott and he will tell you I wave the flag high! Larry, Bill Bailey, and Arch Yancey are special to me. Did you watch what they call country music the other night. Joke! Duke

TRIVIA ANSWER: The term TV dinner is a popular trademark originally used for a brand of packaged meal developed in 1953 for C.A. Swanson & Sons (The name in full is TV Brand Frozen Dinner). The original TV Dinner comes in aluminum trays and heats in ovens. Most frozen food trays are now made of microwaveable material, usually plastic that fits nicely on TV tray tables. The name TV dinner comes from the shape of the tray upon which it serves. The main entrée is in a bigger compartment on one side of the tray. The vegetables line up in smaller compartments on the other side. The arrangement is similar to how the front panels of a 1950s TV set looks with the screen on the left and speakers and control knobs on the right. One reason given for the name TV dinner is that early packaging features the image of a TV set. Another rationale is that many families eat these dinners in front of their TV sets. One of my favorite frozen TV dinners is spaghetti and meatballs with a few shakes of parmesan cheese for under $1.

JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-Retired 2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Trivia Question. Hey Jim, Your mention of WLS’s 89th anniversary reminds me of one of my favorite radio trivia questions. Where did those call letters come from, and what do they stand for? Answer: WLS was put on the air in 1924 by Sears Roebuck, which advertised itself as the “World’s Largest Store.” WLS. Now you know. Jim Bell
