BEATLES INDIAN SITAR ACE IS GONE In 1965, the Beatles lead guitarist George Harrison chums around with sitar musician Ravi Shankar who becomes a hippie music icon. Harrison proclaims Ravi Shankar as the godfather of world music. Ravi plays a four-hour set at the Monterey Pop Festival in addition to the opening day of Woodstock. The first time a Rock band plays the sitar in one of their songs is George Harrison on the Beatles tune Norwegian Wood from their 1965 album Rubber Soul. Ravi’s sitar style explodes in many late 1960s Rock records. Ravi Shankar dies at 92 in San Diego, CA on Tuesday, December 11, 2012.

BOORTZ CALLS IT QUITS IN AGGIELAND On inauguration day 2013, longtime radio personality and Aggie alum Neil Boortz retires. In September 2012 Neal says that he will broadcast his next-to-the-last show in Bryan/College Station, TX. Boortz says that he chooses to end his radio career where it begins on WTAW-1620. Boortz beloved chair jazzed up with the Texas A&M logo goes on the auction block to raise money for Atlanta’s Children’s Cancer & Blood Disorders Center. Bryan Broadcasting says: When I heard the chair was on their auction block, knew it had to come home to WTAW and Aggieland. And so, we bid high and often and today the chair sits prominently in our studios. Neil’s syndicated talk show ends on January 21, 2013, replaced by former presidential candidate Herman Cain.

AUSTRALIAN RADIO PRANK GOES PLANK Two Australian radio DJs are the talk of the world when their prank goes awry. Mel Greig and Michael Christian of 2DayFM pranked the hospital where pregnant Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton stays. They fool the nurse who answers the phone but because of world wide embarrassment she takes her own life. How tragic. Radio Ink’s Brian Glicklich reports: Broadcast attorney David Oxenford…advice for those…thinking that was a good idea…even before the unexpected terrible outcome was known, it was very clear that this broadcast was not the type of gag that US broadcasters should imitate. Greig and Christian beg forgiveness on Australian TV’s A Current Affair and Today Tonight. What do you think about this radio prank that ends in death?

DAVE MICHAELS (Dayton-Huber Heights, OH) Subject: “Rocky’s Christmas Tree”. In the 70’s & 80’s WSAI 1360 Radio had a Security Guard at the front gate. His name was “Rocky” in uniform (no weapon)! He was on duty from dark until 5am the next day. Cincinnati winters can be brutal and Rocky used to drink a little while on duty to stay warm and make it though the night! One morning before Christmas day; the News Dir. came into the station lobby and found The Big Christmas tree on the floor and “Rocky” was in the middle of it – tangled up in lights & tinsel passed out sleeping! That ended Rocky’s career there and a new Electronic Gate was installed! Goodbye to my friend and fellow Patriot! “Rocky” (real name withheld) Dave Michaels

Jim: Your mention of Rolling Stones peaked my interest, Their next appearance on Ed Sullivan Show was Nov. 23, 1969, performing a medley. Ironically, I drove clients in a stretch-limo for my co. to Rolling Stones concert, Sun Devil Stadium, Tempe, AZ on Nov. 7, 1997 as nearly 45,000 attended. How do I recall the date? Glad you asked; the Limo windshield sign is still in my office-museum to this day! BOB & Sonny Lee.

TONY BRIDGE [2010 Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee] (Fort Worth-Benbrook, TX) Subject: KLUE RADIO BURNS THE BEATTLES RECORDS. Back in the middle 1960’s. the Beatles stunned the nation by saying “their singing group was more important than God.” In the East Texas Bible Belt, KLUE (pronounced “clue”) in Longview received hundreds of protest calls. Our big Rock Station sprung into action, promoting a giant bonfire on which to burn their records. Listeners brought timbers for the fire, which made it huge and seen for miles from atop KLUE’s Signal Hill. Police and Sheriff forces cut off entrance of crowds at 3,000. To the blare of Rock Music the fire was lighted and the Beatles music was destroyed much to the glee of a crowd of every age. Covered by numerous TV stations, Several Newspapers and the Associated Press, it became a worldwide event. The story even made the magazine “Uncut” the UK’s leading Rock publication. My friends at KLIF, KBOX, KFJZ, and KXOL in the Multiplex, I’m told, turned green with envy. Moral: “Don’t ever count out the Little Guys.”
