MusicCityGhost: Do You Know Your Music Business ABC’s

Do You Have a mechanical license for the cover tunes he have on your CD you’re selling off the band stand

Did you ever stop to wonder on a worldwide scale how many singers watch the various awards shows and feel in their mind that they are every bit as good as those award winners?  99% of those dreamers are just that, dreamers living in la la land.  I recently talked to a singer who has been singing for 9 years.  I asked him what PRO (Performing Rights Organization) he was a member of.  He said, “I guess none,

I don’t even know what a PRO is.”  I told him that’s ok and proceeded to ask him a few more questions just to see how much he knew and didn’t know about the ABC’s of the Music Business.  I next asked him if he was a member of AFTRA (The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists)  and of course once again his reply was he didn’t know what AFTRA is.

My final question for him was if he had a mechanical license for the cover tunes he had on his CD that he was selling off the band stand.  I got the same answer.  He had no clue of what a mechanical license was and had never even heard of such a thing.

If you are in the Music Business and don’t know your ABC’s how in the world can you proceed to the next level?  How can you compete against the millions of others in your field if they have the knowledge and you don’t?

I am not saying every singer in the world needs to enroll in a Music Business college course but if you plan on staying in a highly specialized field of employment at least learn your ABC’s.

MCG: When Should Artists Expression Be Banned?

MusicCityGhost: When Should Artists Expression Be Banned?

How about the Rap artists using every swear word that was ever invented and the crowd sings along with him?

A few years ago a very famous Rock Star would mutilate a live chicken on his live stage show each evening.  A different touring Artist  would defecate right on the stage to a huge screaming audience that seemed to enjoy the spectacle.   Now advance the clock and there is a Country touring artist that strokes a champagne bottle in the same manner as if he was masturbating and when the foamy liquid shoots out all over the crowd they  give him a standing ovation.  When is this form of Artist expression considered going too far?  How about the Rap artists using every swear word that was ever invented and the crowd sings along with him?

MusicCityGhost: Is Google Spying On You?

MusicCityGhost: Is Google Spying On You?

Let us all hope and pray that GOOGLE is not secretly owned by the government, Hollywood or ????

It was announced today that the GOOGLE tracking system can still monitor your every move even when you have it turned off.  Much like the novel written by George Orwell entitled 1984 where the author suggests BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU with big brother being the government.  Even though the novel was written in 1949 the novel is set in the year 1984 when most of the world population have become victims of perpetual war, omnipresent government surveillance and public manipulation.  With the GOOGLE tracking system on your cell phone they know what restaurant you are eating at, what grocery store you shop at, how often you go to the gym, and any other movement you make or don’t make.  They have more information on you than you do.  GOOGLE tracking is BIG and will only get bigger.  It frightens me while others seem not to be bothered by it at all.  Let us all hope and pray that GOOGLE is not secretly owned by the government.

MusicCityGhost: Beware Of False Promises

MusicCityGhost: Beware Of False Promises

It seems like some promoters are using social media and dot com websites to make promises that they cannot possibly fulfill.  Promises like guaranteed #1 spots in the charts, guaranteed high paying bookings, help in finding corporate sponsorship, are just a few promises circulating all over the Internet from these promotion companies.  If it was as simple as handing someone a few hundred dollars then can’t you see everyone that thinks they can sing and has a savings account that they would all be stars?  If you are asked to give up your hard earned money to a person who says they can make you rich or make you world famous because of your super talent, then please contact that person’s other clients and see how well they are doing.  I am not saying by any means that every promoter is crooked or hasn’t done some good for their clients.  I am simply saying it is not as simple as they indicate it is.

MusicCityGhost: Different Kinds Of Deodorant

Forgetting your Deodorant at home can get you into more Trouble than you Think

After checking into his expensive hotel room, a well-known traveling businessman recently discovered he forgot his deodorant at home.

He knew the conference he would be attending would be very stressful and so he had to go to the local store and purchase his favorite brand of deodorant.

Upon entering the store the young girl working there politely greeted him, he asked her what aisle the deodorant was on.  She said, “Are you looking for the ball type?”  He replied, “No Miss I want to put it under my arms.”

She then immediately reported the elderly gentleman to her store manager.

MusicCityGhost: What Is Wrong With Our Lakes?

MusicCityGhost: What Is Wrong With Our Lakes?

When I was a Child You never heard of anyone getting sick from the water in the lake

More and more people are going to the emergency room at their local hospital to find out their stomach or intestinal infection came from swallowing some water from the lake in which they were swimming. What is going on here?

As a child I swam or wadded in creeks, lakes, and anywhere else I could find water to help cool off in the triple digit heat waves of the Summer. I never got sick from swallowing the water. I swallowed my share of it as I am not the greatest swimmer. People getting off of work at their factory job often jumped into my favorite swimming hole with a bar of soap and used the lake as their bathtub. It was not uncommon to see a baby playing in the water wearing nothing but a diaper. My guess is those diapers were not always sterile. You never heard of anyone getting sick from the water in the lake.  Why are our lakes so dangerous to swim in these days? Places like Flint Michigan found out too late that drinking water from their lake as a water supply was not the smartest decision made by the authorities. It is so sad that this is a common problem in the United States. My fondest childhood memories are centered around Summer and all the fun we had at the lake.

MusicCityGhost: What is the attraction all about?

MusicCityGhost: What is the attraction all about?

I do not wish to stand in a crowd of 300,000 sweaty people in 90 degree weather

This year the Nashville Chamber of commerce predicts 300,000 people will converge on downtown’s River Front area to watch the 4th of July Independence day fireworks display.  The Nashville symphony will play to it’s hugest crowd ever.  The same orchestra can barely get enough paying customers inside their beautiful air conditioned symphony hall called the Schermerhorn to attend one of their regular concerts.  Several of the same Country Music Artists that performed at CMA Music Fest in June will be on hand to entertain as well.

If you prefer to watch the fireworks from one of the many Honky Tonk rooftops, you better get your wallet out.  The price ranges from $150 per person to $500 for a spot to stand and watch the spectacular.  Is it the loud noise that attracts so many?  It can’t be because if it was then why do so many in attendance wear ear plugs?  Is it the crowd that attracts so many?  I for one do not wish to stand in a crowd of 300,000 sweaty people in 90 degree weather.

What is it that makes this event so popular?  What ever it is you can bet the downtown merchants are jumping with joy as they see a night of making huge profits.  If someone would like to comment on why it is so important for them to attend this event, then please do so.  I personally will watch the whole thing on my television in the comfort of my living room just outside of Nashville.

MusicCityGhost: Music Row Facelift Long Overdue

MusicCityGhost: Music Row Facelift Long Overdue

I Look Forward To The New Music Row And Goodbye To All Those Old Houses.

The buzz on Music Row these days seems to center around the fact that several of the buildings on Music Row could soon be demolished to make room for high rise office, condominium, and restaurant buildings.  I suppose someone will want to harm me after reading this story but plearemember these are only my opinions.

The historians keep saying the little houses that once housed recording studios, music publishers, promotion companies will disappear and thus the historical value and charm of Music Row will also disappear.  NONE of those little houses are standing there in their historical or original structure.  NONE of them could have ever passed Metro Codes in this day and time and thus have been modified and modified again including and not limited to a total renewal of electrical, plumbing, roofing, siding, and flooring just to be able to pass inspection.

So exacty where is the historical value? Just because those drafty old houses once housed the office of a music publisher that distributed songs the whole world can sing along with doesn’t mean it should stand there until it falls down.  Those new high rise buildings usually come with underground parking.  Yes parking will finally be available on Music Row.  The retro looking area of the city will shine brightly with it’s new air conditioned buildings and visitors will be able to sit down and enjoy a nice meal instead of dining on a hot dog and a beer.

Lower Broadway in Nashville also known as the Honky Tonk District, enjoys the wealth it takes in annually because of it’s charm and allowing the adult Country Music fans of the world to indulge in their favorite music and plenty of cold alcoholic beverages.  I am happy for downtown Nashville and all of it’s popularity and I say let’s not change it in any way since it is working so well.

Now is the time to take Music Row up a notch and let’s start acting like professionals instead of the “Hee Haw” stereo type portrayed in movies.  I look forward to the new Music Row and goodbye to all those old houses.

MCG: Weird Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gifts

MusicCityGhost: Weird Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gifts

A Gift Doesn’t Always Come Gift Wrapped Or Does It ?

According the National Retail Federation statistics in 2018, both Mother’s Day spending and Father’s Day spending was in the billions. Gifts for the two occasions included but were not limited to cards, candy, flowers, dinners, neck ties, etc.

I asked one Mom on my street what she got for Mother’s Day and she said, “I asked my son to stop drinking.” He very reluctantly agreed to stop drinking for 1 month and she said it was the best gift she could ever hope for.

My next adventure was to ask a Dad or two what they got for Father’s day. The answer I liked the best was this one. “My son and daughter-n-law came by and mowed my lawn and helped me put up a new flood light in my back yard.”

I realize the local restaurants, retail merchants, and candy shops are not fond of this answer but it just goes to show you that sometimes the gifts that cost the least are the one’s most desired by people. Don’t place the value of a gift by it’s price. Sometimes you can make a person very happy by just listening to their needs and trying to full fill their desire. It doesn’t always come gift wrapped
