Biography of Donny Richmond

Donny Richmond is a multi-talented, multi-award winning entertainer. The singer, composer, actor, and TV personality has achieved success in various music genres including country, gospel, and pop. Numerous awards and accolades bestowed to Donny include Artist Of The Decade, Entertainer Of The Decade, The Living Legend Award, and nominations for Best Lead Actor in a Feature Film. With his induction into the Airplay Express Recording Artist Hall Of Fame, Donny is now an inductee of 4 different music Halls Of Fame.

Early in his career, while living in England, Richmond was signed to a worldwide contract with London based EMI Records, before experiencing a spiritual renewal, which led him to approach his music differently. Returning to the States, he was, during the late 1990’s, at the forefront of what became the “Christian Country Music” movement.

Today, Donny Richmond is recognized as an innovator, leader, and consummate entertainer. In fact, entertaining has been a way of life for Donny since he was a child. His winning smile, pleasing personality and healthy appearance helped Donny win a contest to pose for a milk advertisement when he was a baby. Donny was just four years old when he began singing for the neighbors around the kids’ swings in the backyard. In the second grade, if it rained and the class couldn’t go outdoors for recess, the teacher would call on Donny to sing.

Richmond grew up in the suburbs of Maryland just outside of Washington, D.C. In Junior and Senior High School, he became interested in writing songs and wearing “dude” clothes; and would entertain his classmates. Donny sang at his own Senior Prom, wearing an outlandish gold outfit, including gold sparkle shoes. After high school and while appearing with bands at night, Donny attended college by day, studying music and acting.

In 1992, while visiting Nashville, Richmond was invited to appear on a special recording project with Stonewall Jackson, featuring many of the all-time top country music artists. Donny found himself in the recording studio alongside Garth Brooks and others. The resulting Album is entitled “Stonewall Jackson & Super Friends”. Other artists featured include Vince Gill, Alison Kraus, Tim McGraw, Charlie Daniels – a host of the country music superstars and “legends”.

Richmond moved to Nashville in 1993, and since that time has gone on to make history by charting both on mainstream Country Music Charts and Christian/Country Gospel Charts simultaneously. In the U.S. during the 1990’s, Richmond was at the forefront of the “Christian Country Music” movement. Donny was arguably the emerging genre’s most publicized artist, and was its first recording artist to be selected to appear on the mainstream Country Music CDX Compilation disc, distributed to thousands of radio stations across America, and internationally. Also appearing on the disc were Garth Brooks, George Jones, Wynonna Judd, and Kenny Chesney.

While having many National U.S. #1 Country Gospel songs and winning a host of Music Association Awards, Richmond has also clocked up an extremely impressive list of television appearances, including his own “The Don Richmond Show,” which had its beginnings in September 1997 for the Christian Television Network in Nashville, Tennessee, and has been viewed by millions since.

In 2001, Donny Richmond’s Christmas video, “Heartbreak Holiday,” was a smashing hit on American National Country Music Television Networks, including Great

American Country (GAC) and VH-1. It has continued to receive airplay each Christmas season, and is now regarded by many as a classic. “Heartbreak Holiday” also led to the Christmas 2005 short feature film of the same name and starring Richmond, which drew rave reviews on American television. Donny has also been featured on TV networks circling the globe.

The wonderful response from European television audiences inspired Donny to release more material and to tour there.

Many notable successes are included in Richmond’s string of hits. Donny’s “Ask The Man Upstairs”(co-written by himself and David Walker) was #1 throughout Europe in 2007 on both the Christian and the Country charts. “That’s What Christmas Means” recorded by Donny with an all-star cast of musicians including Hall Of Famers Charlie McCoy(harmonica, vibes), Boots Randolph(sax), and James Burton(guitar), was #1 on Europe’s Christmas Charts, 2009. This song was co-written by Donny, David Walker and Randy Smith.

In 2011, Richmond’s recording of “Gospel Jukebox”(written by Walter Cunningham) became the longest running #1 song in the history of the European Christian charts, breaking the previous record set by Vince Gill. 2012 saw Donny’s “I Believe” become the longest running Top 20 song of the year.

Donny’s 2015 international Chart Hit; “The World Keeps Loving Elvis” was recorded with the largest collection ever of Elvis Presley’s former musicians to back up any singer other than Elvis himself. Other unique details about the song are detailed on YouTube. 2016/2017, Donny’s duet recording with country music legend Stonewall Jackson of “JESUS IS MY LIFELINE” once again became an international #1 Chart Hit, now having reached #1 in 3 different decades. In 2019, Donny’s “There Is An Answer” broke the all time record for longevity at #1 on the international Airplay Express Charts. Donny’s recordings have reached #1 in more than a dozen countries.

Donny has appeared in a national or international chart every month for the last 5 years. World famous backup singers, The Jordanaires, are also to thank for Donny’s success, as they have appeared on many of Donny’s hit recordings.

Growing up in the farm belt in the middle of the country’s rice industry created a man of many accomplishments as a result of developing hard working ethics, a sincere nature guided by a belief in a higher power to help your neighbor, and having some success fueled many of his next career moves. His loving family supported Roger to become a Crop Duster Pilot and years later a serious crash put a slight crimp in his plans! When one door closes another will open and Roger’s earlier days, spent with family at popular entertainment clubs spurned a desire to help artists succeed in the music industry.

Roger’s cousin, Joe Lewis, was an accomplished songwriter who wrote songs for Conway Twitty and played bass in his band. Roger always liked Joe’s song, Hello Darlin’. Well this was just the start, as there were many popular artists that Roger met that shaped his interest and they include Charlie Rich, Jerry Lee Lewis and Mickey Gilley. He heard some great music from the band members too, including Owen Bloodworth, cousins’ Paul Holder and Jerry Bell to name just a few! Music was part of their life and clubs such as Bob King’s “King Capri and the BNI Club, Porky’s Roost Top, the Silver Moon Club were places that Roger’s interest deepened spending much time with family and friends!

Roger’s love for country music artists has taken “flight” with artists that  reenergized their careers.   Roger’s engines are humming now as Freddie Hart’s 372nd recorded song, “Let’s Witness For The Lord” took the top of the AirplayExpress gospel charts, a #1!  Fraser Newcombe from Nova Scotia, an already accomplished performer in Canada, is moving up the chart as well and looking forward to his return to a show in the United States in September in Willow Springs, Missouri with Eric Lewis , a talented Bluegrass career musician and founder of the George D Hay Society (preserving the original Grand Ol Opry founder); along with Judy Haney who is a two time award winner at the National Country Music Award festival in Pigeon Forge, TN.    Long term artist, Connie Hall from Wisconsin has unleashed her well written gospel music recently and has it now available at all of the most popular retailers like Amazon and Itunes etc.  Life is living music for Roger Woods and he is enjoying it!  RogersMusicPromotions.com is the place to look for more information!

Donny Richmond enters Country Gospel Hall of Fame

SEVIERVILLE, TN — Sevier County’s Donny Richmond was inducted to the Country Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame recently during a ceremony in Branson, Missouri. Richmond, a multiple award winning artist, is known in many countries.

As a young artist, Richmond moved to Hollywood, California to pursue a show business career before being invited to London, England where he was signed to a worldwide recording contract as a Pop music artist with EMI Records in the 1980s.

Upon returning to the states, Richmond experienced a spiritual renewal which led him to change his approach and to explore his new dream of influencing the world with positive Christian values by way of country music. Moving to Nashville in 1992, Donny became the very first predominately Country Gospel style artist chosen to be included on the mainstream Country music CDX Compilation CD distributed to thousands of radio stations across America, and was featured on the same CD with Garth Brooks, George Jones, Wynonna Judd, and Kenny Chesney.

During the 1990s, Richmond was at the forefront of the emerging new genre of music now known as “Christian Country” or “Positive Country” music. He was arguably the genre’s most publicized artist. During this period, Richmond received various music association awards in categories including Male Vocalist of The Year, Songwriter, Producer, and Top TV Host. He was Entertainer of The Year 6 times. Richmond was named honorary “Colonel” by the Governor of Tennessee and appeared on The Grand Ole Opry. In the year 2000, he was awarded as both the country gospel Artist of the Decade and Entertainer of the Decade. While a regularly appearing artist on Country Gospel and Christian Country Charts, with numerous #1s, Richmond hosted his own TV program, “The Don Richmond Show,” which aired on the Christian Television Network (CTN) and in syndication. Subsequent programs and TV Specials have come to be seen in various countries, including throughout Europe, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and others.

Richmond moved to Sevier County in 2001 to perform at the Classic Country Theater in Pigeon Forge. He decided to stay after falling in love with the people and sights of the area. With the success of his TV programs airing overseas in 2005, Donny’s record releases began charting internationally, and this long string of chart hits continues today. Donny’s songs have reached #1 in more than a dozen countries.

In 2016, Richmond’s duet recording with country music legend Stonewall Jackson, “Jesus Is My Lifeline”, reached a music history milestone, having reached #1 status during 3 different decades. During its initial release in the 1990’s, the song was the longest running #1 in the history of the U.S. National Music City News and Gospel Voice Charts.

In 2016, Richmond’s acting role in the faith-based movie, “The Christmas Reunion,” was accompanied by featured roles for both of his sons, Donny, Jr and Carl. What George Jones Told Alan Jackson

What George Jones Told Alan Jackson

“I Would’ve Done That Anyway” Alan

During Sunday night’s Country Music Hall of Fame Medallion Ceremony, Alan Jackson received his medal and became an official Hall of Famer. And during the festivities, Jackson opened up about how people have interpreted his quiet side over the years.

So when he was a car salesman, he said, he was a good one. “I was a good car salesman. And I’m not really shy, I’m just kind of socially awkward,” Jackson told the crowd, “and mainly I just don’t like to talk much. As a car salesman, I was good because I knew cars and I knew what people needed, so I helped them.”

According to Country Aircheck, when it came to songwriting, Jackson said he’d always maintained the write-what-you-know style of crafting songs.

“I wrote what I knew. My daddy was a mechanic, I grew up in a garage and that’s all I cared about. That’s the reason I moved to Nashville to become a singer. I loved cars, and I couldn’t really buy any.

I didn’t see much of a future of being able to buy a lot of cars and being a singing star looked like the only shot I had,” he shared.

What kept Jackson on his straight-up country path was some advice George Jones had given him in the early days. “He told me the first time I met him: ‘Keep it country.’ I would have done that anyway, but it meant so much coming from him.

“I just hope there are going to be some young people coming along who really care about it as much as I have and try to keep it alive. It’s going to be hard today. You won’t hear it on the radio anymore, but there’s still a lot of people out there, young and old, who want to hear what I call real country music.”
