One of the most exciting trends in downtown Nashville has been the conversion of stodgy old office buildings into hip new boutique hotels. While some of them still may look a little boxy on the outside, step into the lobby to discover a world a luxury replete with top-notch amenities, great restaurants and cool cocktail bars. Here’s a handful of the best.

Only open for about a year and a half, 21C is already the dean of this generation of new downtown lodging options. The entire building actually is a museum, open 24 hours for anyone to come visit rooms and hallways filled with edgy modern art. After a little gallery time, stop in at Gray & Dudley for an artfully crafted cocktail under the watchful eyes of some slightly (ok, extremely) creepy gargoylesque figures of wolves, rabbits and lambs staring down from the walls. Even better, make a reservation at G&D’s restaurant for some of noted chef Rob Newton’s food that combines his Arkansas roots with his fascination with Asian cuisine. How does that combination manifest itself? Get any dish with rice in it and you won’t be disappointed!

First of all, it’s not “The Bobby,” just Bobby–they want you to be on a first-name basis with this luxury lifestyle hotel. Eating and drinking options at Bobby are casual, but that doesn’t mean they are ordinary. From a cozy sidewalk cafe to the gritty car-themed Garage Bar to the internationally-inspired Bobby’s Tavern, the ground floor of the hotel offers excellent choices for your dining pleasure. For the real highlight, though, head to the rooftop where there’s a slick pool lounge and an actual 1956 Greyhound bus that has been refurbished and placed on the roof by crane to create a unique spot to enjoy a cocktail.

Noelle is actually a member of Marriott’s line of boutique hotels that they call their Tribute Portfolio. Featuring comfortable king-sized beds in every room and four huge suites on the top floor, Noelle is aimed at both leisure and business travelers. Drug Store Coffee features beans courtesy of local favorite Barista Parlor while Makeready Libations & Liberation aims to free your mind with a menu of American classics in a gastropub setting. Head to the Trade Room lounge for a drink in classy environs surrounded by terrazzo floors and marble walls. Noelle also has a rooftop lounge, because apparently that’s the law in downtown Nashville now, but it’s a pretty special one. Rare Bird is truly a year-round destination thanks to overhead heaters and weighted blankets to keep you and your sweetie warm while you snuggle.

Holston House is also part of a national chain, in this case the Hyatt group of hotels. Even in a city filled with rooftop aeries, the pool deck at Holston House stands out. Offering sweeping views of the downtown craziness below, TENN on Top is a calm oasis of peace, at least until it’s party time. Then, the bands get pumping and the deep menu of top-shelf bourbons starts flowing to create a festive atmosphere. Holston House continues their naming theme with their Southern-inspired restaurant TENN and the accompanying Bar TENN in the lobby. Even if the names aren’t that imaginative, the food and drink surely are.

The Fairlane Hotel still exudes the vibe of the former bank building it used to be, but management takes that theme and rolls with it. The coffee shop recalls the former building tenants with its name of Union Teller, but the Stumptown java is much better than any lobby coffee you would have found in the urn of the bank back in the past century. Mile End Delicatessen is evocative of a Montreal-style or New York deli thanks to delicious sandwiches piled high with sliced meats and bagels topped with a schmear of decadent cream cheese and imported smoked salmon. Ellington’s is the signature restaurant on the upper floor which used to be the executive dining room for the bank bigwigs. Now the rest of us can enjoy their menu of elevated Southern classics in an attractive mid century modern decor or on the festive outdoor terrace.

Following the worldwide success of the soundtrack from The Greatest Showman, filmmakers decided to up the ante by enlisting the help of famous artists to recreate the future classics featured in the film for a new release: The Greatest Showman – Reimagined. Among those acts is country music’s own Zac Brown Band, who perform a countrified version of “From Now On.”

Originally performed by Hugh Jackman, the reinvented track highlights ZBB’s iconic harmonies and hints of twang as they sing “From now on / These eyes will not be blinded by the lights / From now on / What’s waited till tomorrow starts tonight, Tonight / Let this promise in me start / Like an anthem in my heart / From now on.”

In addition to ZBB’s appearance, the new soundtrack features vocal performances from P!nk, Kelly Clarkson, Sara Bareilles, Pentatonix, Kesha, Panic! At The Disco and many others.

The Greatest Showman – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack spent 31 weeks in the Top 10 on the SoundScan/Billboard 200, including two weeks at No.1. With streams exceeding 3 billion, the soundtrack has since earned 4x platinum certification in the United Kingdom and South Korea; 2x platinum in Ireland, Australia, and Singapore; platinum in New Zealand, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, and Indonesia; and gold in Canada, Mexico, and the Philippines.

The record includes “This Is Me,” performed by Keala Settle, and earned Best Original Song – Motion Picture at the 75th Golden Globe Awards and was nominated for Best Original Song at the 90th Academy Awards.

Momentum Life a South African Insurance Company says that based on the outrage following the insurance company’s rejection of a R2.4m payout, it is clear that the public is not as informed about policy payouts as they would have hoped.Momentum’s rejection of a life insurance payout due to the non-disclosure of a pre-existing health condition by policy holder, Nathan Ganas, has sparked anger on social media and widespread debate about the guidelines governing insurance companies’ right to reject or approve claims. On Twitter and Facebook, policy holders have threatened to cancel their insurance with Momentum if the decision is not reversed.

Ganas died from gunshot wounds in March 2017 when he was hijacked in his driveway. But the insurance firm refused to pay his R2.4m policy claim after it was discovered that he suffered from high blood sugar levels. Momentum said its decision to reject the claim has also been confirmed by the Ombudsmen for Long-Term Insurance.

“We recognise that although we are doing the right thing, it is apparent that the public at large are not as informed as we hoped. As an industry, we need to elevate the importance of full disclosure.” Question: If he did not die from High Blood Sugar Levels but a bullet through his body what is the problem with paying out, no wonder many people don’t trust the Insurance companies

Brad Paisley pays tribute to his hero George Strait in “turbo honky-tonk, reminiscent of ‘80s and ‘90s country” single, “Bucked Off”

While pulling off hosting duty at the CMA Awards 2018, Brad Paisley took the time to introduce fans to his brand new single, “Bucked Off.” The song, which Paisley describes as “turbo honky-tonk, reminiscent of ‘80s and ‘90s country but futuristic,” tells the story of a man comparing the feeling of getting dumped by his girlfriend to that of getting bucked off a bronco and getting the wind knocked out of him.

“This ain’t my first rodeo / Someone’s gonna get hurt whenever someone says we need to talk / Feels like there’s a number pinned onto the back of my shirt / Cause this is where the cowboy gets bucked off,” Paisley sings.

“There was a time in country music in the ‘90s, ‘80s when songs were rodeo metaphors. They were stories of cowboys and so much fun to listen to on the radio with the production and the twang and the heart and all of that great George Strait, Garth Brooks music of the time,” the West Virginia native shared. “It’s something that I’ve not done much of. I haven’t done a whole lot of that kind of rodeo, sort of analogy kind of music. This was something that’s kind of my tip of the hat to my hero George Strait with a bit of a modern twist.”

The tune was penned by Paisley with Chris DuBois and Kelley Lovelace, with Paisley and Dunn Huff producing.

“Bucked Off” is the first taste of new Paisley music since 2017’s Love and War, featuring “Last Time for Everything” and “Heaven South.”

Dollywood’s “Smoky Mountain Christmas” Celebration

Dolly Parton kicked off the holiday season with her annual Smoky Mountain Christmas celebration at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., on Nov. 9. In addition to a performances by Dolly with her brother Randy and several nieces, Dolly opened the park’s newest expansion, Glacier Ridge, a “frosted version of the Smoky Mountains” that features a 50-foot-tall animated Christmas tree, a walk-through version of the Northern Lights and a variety of other light shows set to classic holiday tunes. Glacier Ridge pushes the park’s total count to more than 5 million twinkling lights.

“Christmas is so important to me for so many reasons,” says Dolly. “I’m so thankful that it’s a time when our family comes together to share stories, remember old times, and make new memories we’ll take with us through the next year and beyond. There’s a lot of laughin’ and a whole lot of love when we all get together. I want those folks who come to experience Christmas with us at Dollywood to feel like they’re part of the family, making those memories and sharing those special times. I know the fun they’ll find in Glacier Ridge will help them create brand new memories and traditions.”

TULSA, Okla. – Roy Clark, the legendary ‘superpicker’, GRAMMY, CMA and ACM award winner, Country Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry member and co-host of the famed ‘Hee Haw’ television series, died today at the age of 85 due to complications from pneumonia at home in Tulsa, Okla.

Roy Clark’s decade-defying success could be summed up in one word — sincerity. Sure, he was one of the world’s finest multi-instrumentalists, and one of the first cross-over artists to land singles on both the pop and country charts. He was the pioneer who turned Branson, Mo., into the live music capitol of the world (the Ozark town today boasts more seats than Broadway). And his talents turned Hee Haw into the longest-running syndicated show in television history.

But the bottom line for Roy Clark was the honest warmth he gave to his audiences. Bob Hope summed it up when he told Roy, “Your face is like a fireplace.”

“A TV camera goes right through your soul,” says the man who starred on Hee Haw for 24 years and was a frequent guest host for Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. “If you’re a bad person, people pick that up. I’m a firm believer in smiles. I used to believe that everything had to be a belly laugh. But I’ve come to realize that a real sincere smile is mighty powerful.” For a man who didn’t taste major success until he was 30, the key was not some grand plan but rather taking everything in its own time. “Sure,” he said, “I had dreams of being a star when I was 18. I could’ve pushed it too, but it wouldn’t have happened any sooner. I’m lucky. What’s happened has happened in spite of me.”

In fact, that’s what Clark titled his autobiography, My Life — In Spite of Myself! with Marc Elliot (Simon & Shuster, 1994). The book reminded many that there is much more to Roy Clark than fast fingers and a quick wit.

That he was raised in Washington, D.C., often surprises people. Born Roy Linwood Clark on April 15, 1933 in Meherrin, Virginia, his family moved to D.C. when he was a youngster. His father played in a square dance band and took him to free concerts by the National Symphony and by various military bands. “I was subjected to different kinds of music before I ever played. Dad said, ‘Never turn your ear off to music until your heart hears it–because then you might hear something you like.'”

Beginning on banjo and mandolin, he was one of those people “born with the music already in them.” His first guitar, a Sears Silvertone, came as a Christmas present when he was 14. That same year, 1947, he made his first TV appearance. He was 15 when he earned $2 for his first paid performance, with his dad’s band. In the fertile, diverse musical soil of cosmopolitan D.C., he began playing bars and dives on Friday and Saturday nights until he was playing every night and skipping school–eventually dropping out at 15. “Music was my salvation, the thing I loved most and did best. Whatever was fun, I’d go do that.”

The guitar wizard soon went on tour with country legends such as Hank Williams and Grandpa Jones. After winning a national banjo competition in 1950, he was invited to perform at the Grand Ole Opry, which led to shows with Red Foley and Ernest Tubb. Yet he’d always return to D.C. to play not only country but jazz, pop, and early rock’n’roll (he’s prominently featured in the recent book Capitol Rock); to play with black groups and white groups; to play fast, to even play guitar with his feet. In 1954, he joined Jimmy Dean and the Texas Wildcats, appearing in clubs and on radio and TV, and even backing up Elvis Presley.

But in 1960, he was 27 and still scrambling. An invitation to open for Wanda Jackson at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas proved to be his big break. It led to his own tour, on the road for 345 straight nights at one stretch, and when he returned to Vegas in 1962, he came back as a headliner and recording star, with his debut album The Lightning Fingers Of Roy Clark. The next year, he had his first hit, The Tips Of My Fingers, a country song that featured an orchestra and string section. “We didn’t call it crossover then but I guess that’s what it was,” he says. “We didn’t aim for that, because if you aim for both sides you miss them both. But we just wanted to be believable.”

He was–on record and on TV, where his first appearances in 1963 on ‘The Tonight Show’ and ‘American Bandstand’ showcased his easygoing attitude and rural sense of humor. “Humor is a blessing to me. My earliest recollections are of looking at something and seeing the lighter side. But it’s always spontaneous. I couldn’t write a comedy skit for someone else.”

Throughout the ’60s, Clark recorded several albums, toured constantly, and appeared on TV variety shows from Carson to Mike Douglas to Flip Wilson. “I was the token bumpkin. It became, ‘Let’s get that Clark guy. He’s easy to get along with.'” Then came ‘Hee Haw.’ A countrified ‘Laugh-In’ with music, shot in Nashville, ‘Hee Haw’ premiered in 1969. Co-starring Clark and Buck Owens, it was an immediate hit. Though CBS canceled the show after two-and-a-half years, despite ranking in the Top 20, the series segued into syndication, where it remained until 1992. “I long ago realized it was not a figure of speech when people come up to me and say they grew up watching me since they were ‘that big’.”

A generation or two has also grown up listening to him. In 1969, Yesterday, When I Was Young charted Top 20 Pop and #9 Country (Billboard). Including Yesterday, Clark has had 23 Top 40 country hits, among them eight Top 10s: The Tips Of My Fingers (#10, 1963), I Never Picked Cotton (#5) and Thank God And Greyhound You’re Gone (#6, 1970), The Lawrence Welk-Hee Haw Counter Revolution Polka (#9, 1972), Come Live With Me (#1) and Somewhere Between Love And Tomorrow (#2, 1973), and If I Had It To Do All Over Again (#2, 1976). In addition, his 12-string guitar rendition of Malaguena is considered a classic and, in 1982, he won a Grammy (Best Country Instrumental Performance) for Alabama Jubilee.

A consummate musician, no matter the genre, he co-starred with Petula Clark at Caesar’s Palace, became the first country artist to headline at the Montreux International Jazz Festival and appeared in London on ‘The Tom Jones Show.’ Clark was amazed when guitarists from England credited his BBC specials and performances on variety TV shows with the likes of the Jackson 5 for inspiring them to play. But the highlight of his career, he said, was a pioneering, sold-out 1976 tour of the then-Soviet Union. “Even though they didn’t know the words, there were tears in their eyes when I played Yesterday. Folks there said we wouldn’t realize in our lifetime the good we’d accomplished, just because of our pickin’ around.”

When he returned in 1988 to now-Russia, Clark was hailed as a hero. Though he’d never bought a joke and doesn’t read music, the self-described, and proud of it, “hillbilly singer” was that rare entertainer with popularity worthy of a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and respect worthy of the Academy of Country Music’s Pioneer Award and membership in the Gibson (Guitar) Hall of Fame; an entertainer who could star in Las Vegas (the first country artist inducted into its Entertainers Hall of Fame), in Nashville (becoming the 63rd member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1987), and at Carnegie Hall. Roy was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2009.

Roy’s many good deeds on behalf of his fellow man led to him receiving the 1999 Minnie Pearl Humanitarian of the Year Award from TNN’s Music City News Awards. In October, 2000, he was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, and he was actively involved with school children who attend the Roy Clark Elementary School in Tulsa, Okla.

From his home in Tulsa, where he moved in 1974 with Barbara, his wife of 61 years, Clark continued to tour extensively. For him — and for his legion of loyal fans — live performance was what it was all about. “Soon as you hit the edge of the stage and see people smiling and know they’re there to hear you, it’s time to have fun. I keep a band of great young people around me, and we’re not musically restrained. It’s not about ‘let’s do it correct’ but ‘let’s do it right.’” At the end of each of Roy’s concerts, he would tell the audience, “We had to come, but you had a choice. Thanks for being here.” With responding smiles, audiences continued to thank Roy for being there, too.

Roy is preceded in death by his beloved grandson Elijah Clark who passed at the age of fourteen on September 24, 2018. Roy is survived by Barbara, his wife of sixty-one years, his sons Roy Clark II and wife Karen, Dr. Michael Meyer and wife Robin, Terry Lee Meyer, Susan Mosier and Diane Stewart, and his grandchildren: Brittany Meyer, Michael Meyer, Caleb Clark, Josiah Clark and his sister, Susan Coryell.

A memorial celebration will be held in the coming days in Tulsa, Okla., details forthcoming.

and More to Perform at Willie Nelson Tribute Concert

An all-star cast of performers will hit the stage to pay tribute to country icon Willie Nelson at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena on Jan. 12.

The tribute concert—Willie: Life & Songs of an American Outlaw—will feature performances by Alison Krauss, The Avett Brothers, George Strait, Jack Johnson, John Mellencamp, Kris Kristofferson, Lee Ann Womack, Lyle Lovett, Norah Jones and The Little Willies, Sheryl Crow, Susan Tedeschi & Derek Trucks, and Vince Gill. Additional artists will be announced in the coming weeks. Willie is also set to take the stage.

The event will honor Willie and feature some of his greatest hits performed by today’s biggest musical stars. The concert will be televised on A&E at a later date in 2019.

Shania Twain on Her Advice to ‘Real Country’ Contestants: ‘I Dare to be Different’

Shania’s advice for those hoping to make it in the industry: “Being like anyone else is the worst thing you can do.”

It’s this mentality she hopes to instill in the contestants on Real Country, USA Network’s latest competition show surrounding country music. In addition to serving as a panelist, Twain is also an executive producer of the show, contributing her more than 30 years of experience in the industry to those vying for their chance to breakthrough.

The show functions more as an industry showcase than it does a typical reality show competition. Panelists Twain, Travis Tritt and Jake Owen each hand selected seven acts that the audience will vote for across a total of eight episodes. The artists who win in the individual episodes will advance to the grand finale. Many of the performers are hardworking artists and musicians who have been honing their craft for years, ranging from songwriters who’ve already scored hits to Americana duo Young Fables who have three albums under their belt, all in search of an opportunity to elevate their careers.

“I think that we’ve created a platform that is much more like the real world than a talent show,” Twain shares with Sounds Like Nashville and other media. “If you’re in an environment like this and you’re going to be competitive in the grand scale beyond this show, you already have to have the goods.” For Twain’s role, she’s looking for evolved artists, ones who’ve harbored a steady passion for their art and are unwavering in their identity. When looking for talent, Twain was focused on diversity, drawn to artists who are unafraid of being unique. “I’d like to see a new confidence in people. I’d like to see people…saying, ‘I dare to be different. I challenge myself to be different,’” she reflects.

“When I was starting out I didn’t know what the audience wanted either, but that innocence is so valuable. I wasn’t writing to anyone’s expectations. I was just doing what I thought was interesting,” she continues. “I’m encouraging them to just do their own thing and not try to fit in and please the audience or us or the industry. Get up there and do your own thing and get lost in that as your focus.”

With the Real Country format, the 90s era icon says confidence is a key factor, as performers only have one chance to move the audience into voting for them. But the most crucial aspect she advises is they remain true to is their authenticity. The contestants are able to look to Twain and her fellow panelists as guiding forces, but the singer insists they’re not trying to alter the artists’ vision. “We don’t get access to make them something that they weren’t at the beginning of the season. It’s a very fair show in that sense,” she says.

Twain admits, though, that rejection is an inevitable part of the industry, especially for artists venturing down a unique path. She encourages contestants to be open-minded toward credible critiques as a way to help them grow. “Constructive criticism is important to listen to and to take on because you’re going to learn something from it,” she explains. “Be honest with yourself. False confidence is never going to serve you well at all. Self conviction, determination, that’s a very different vocabulary.”
