Opposites attract, and in “Rock & Roll to My Country Soul,” singer/songwriter Jenny Tolman sings about the benefits of meeting her man in the middle. The song pays tribute to a relationship defined by musical genres: he loves rock, she’s an old-school country gal. But that doesn’t stop them from making sweet music when they get together.
Tolman, a musical old soul herself, owns every line and every note of the song thanks to her ever-engaging vocals. As she croons that her beau is more Jimmy Page and she’s more Emmylou Harris, it’s easy to imagine Tolman’s voice alongside those stellar songbirds of the past. Its ethereal-meets-sassy tone gives the modern singer–and song–a throwback feel.
“‘Rock & Roll to My Country Soul’ is such a fun song to play live, that I wanted to recreate the feeling and energy of being at the live show for the viewer. I’m so lucky to have amazing musicians in my band, so being able to showcase that through this song and video, is really special to me,” Tolman tells Sounds Like Nashville.
The video keeps the focus completely on the music, with Tolman and her band in performance mode on a white backdrop. (Though Tolman’s westernista-chic styling and see-right-through-you blue eyes are tough to ignore.) The singer is clearly having fun, rolling off clever lyrics like “From the front porch swing / to Friday night freewheeling / you bring life in the fast lane / to my peaceful easy feeling / you’re the rock and roll / to my country soul / and I like it.” The song is the second single from Tolman’s forthcoming sophomore album, There Goes the Neighborhood, produced by Grammy-nominated Dave Brainard (Brandy Clark, Jerrod Niemann).
