The E Generation

“A fool expresses all his emotions, but a wise person controls them.” (Proverbs 29:11)

Jesus004

In just a few short years we have become the E Generation; E-mailing, E-filing, E-meetings, E-tickets, just to name a few. Have you ever stopped to consider E-motions? Emotions are simply energy (E) in motion, and they have the propensity to take us for one wild ride if we let them.

By God’s design we were created with intrinsic emotions, but how we manage them can be the difference between peace and panic. Our feelings go up and down with great velocity. On any given day we can vacillate between joy-filled excitements to finding ourselves sinking into a dark ocean of fear and depression. The Lord God designed us with emotions so that we could relate to each other and, more importantly, relate to Him. God, however, desires that we keep our emotions in check. Giving our emotions free reign can worsen an already volatile situation or circumstance, thereby tempting us to act in ways contrary to faith. Choosing to respond in a Christ-demonstrated manner can oftentimes be a challenge, because it is contrary to what we feel. At times like these we need to remember that we walk by faith, not by feelings.

Newton’s law of motion tells us that an object either remains at rest, or continues to move at a constant velocity, unless acted upon by a force. When we are resting in the Lord, we remain at rest. When we are running around in a panic, we remain in that whirlwind of swirling emotion. The difference between the two is the changing force. When we rely on Jesus we can remain peacefully at rest. When we take our eyes off Jesus (our changing force), we remain in the turbulent fluctuation of our unreliable emotions.

You may have good reasons to be caught up in the emotion of a situation, but you have even greater reasons to remain confident when life seems overwhelming and out-of-control; and here’s why:

1) You have an Ally in Jesus Christ: “Do not be afraid of them; the Lord your God himself will fight for you.” (Deut 3:22)

2) Your Lord goes with you: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” (Deut 31:6)

3) The battle is the Lord’s: “The horse is made ready for the day of battle, but victory rests with the LORD.” (Proverbs 21:31)

You will never be able to solve all of life’s problems, heal every hurt or change certain circumstances, and that is okay. Your restlessness and fretting will change nothing (Luke 12:25). Being anxious takes your focus off the Lord and places it upon self and circumstance. The Lord reminds us to be anxious for nothing. (Phil 4:6). Remember, when your emotions start to run wild, take a step back, stay calm and give God time to work.

Prayer Heavenly Father  thank You for creating me with emotions

and designing me to be able to have a close, personal relationship with You.

Teach me to rest in You, trust in Your providence and place my emotions in Your hand.

I choose to rest in You, by the power of Jesus Christ, my Force and my Father, Amen
