I was taking Millie for her late-night urging her on so we both wouldn’t get completely drenched in a steady rain, when along came a shappy figure the gloom, his gait wobbly, arms extended to greet my dog. The man looked at me with a boozy grin and asked, “Which way to Bellevue.’
“Strait across. Just keep going east,” I answered . A few minutes Millie and I ducked into a bodega. There was the man again trying to get people to give him cash. I think Bellevue is a better option my friend .You will get three square meal and a bed ” I urged. Then I moved on. But not totally .
I can’t help but see myself in a drunk on the street. I’ve been there . Even now I still I still have that paralyzing moment of shock and recognition when I encounter someone in the throes of addiction. That was me. I think that could still be me.
I woke up the next morning, still thinking about the guy. The rain had gone and the sky was a hard blue. I checked my phone. There was an e-mail alert about the worldwide weekend of prayer for the addicted.
A day rarely goes by when I don’t pray for some suffering addict ‘s even . Today I know who will be in my prayers., even if it’s me. Today I know who will be in my prayers. Lord, addiction has plagues humankind ever since the dawn of time.
Yet recovery is possible with YOU, a day at a time, a prayer at a time – Edward Grinnan
