BILL GARDNER [ex KVIL FM Dallas, KCBQ-1170 San Diego, KSAN FM San Francisco, WFIL-560 Philadelphia, KOOL FM Phoenix] (Las Vegas, NV) Subject: Shrewd Choices. Hi Jim… Had to share, after reading your “Rocky” movie question. I was Program Director and Morning Man at WIBG Philadelphia in 1976 when the receptionist sent a call to my office after my morning show. The man told me essentially that he was “a director I never heard of, making a movie locally starring a guy I probably didn’t know. But the star grew up in Philly and loved WIBG.” Would I “dummy up” a recording they could use in the movie to make it sound like I was on the radio? Of course it paid nothing. I told him it probably wouldn’t be MY favorite thing to do, but my midday guy would probably love doing it. The director was John Avildson, the star Sylvester Stallone, and my midday guy who jumped at the chance when I offered was the late Don Cannon. Cannon had to get corporate management permission to use a station jingle, and I remember their only fear was that it was a “porn flick.” I always file that under “dumb choices Bill Gardner made.” I could have been a movie star….sort of. Or at least the answer to your trivia question. Bill Gardner Las Vegas NV (www.billgardnerontheradio.com)

WAYNE WARNER [Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center] (Springfield, MO) Subject: record-player: wire recorders. Jim, you’ve been around radio for a long time. But do you go back to the days of the wire recorders? Do you know whether radio stations used these late 1940s machines? As you probably know, they predate reel-to-reel tape machines, which use some of the features of the wire recorder. We’re trying to fix one to transfer sermons from wire to CDs for the Assemblies of God archives (Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center), Springfield, MO. Ours is probably the best known brand, Webster-Chicago. But we need some parts to give it new life. Best wishes in your column. Wayne Warner

CHARLES GEORGE [kc5rai, ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Direction for Radio. Did you get to select the Music, or were you told what to play? With your talent a Manager would do better letting you choose. When living at home had me a small station, I had a transmitter from a Radio Shack AM Kit and a FM microphone/transmitter. I had a 4BME Broadcast Electronics Board that Allen Newton sold me for $100. The board got to where it was not worth fixing so donated to a NonCommercial FM station, they never did thank me. My station only covered to the houses on either side and to the backyard, but only on a good Radio. I used the calls KMAP and KFUN. I also had an Electro Voice Microphone. The things one does when they are younger and think they have a future in Radio. 73, Charles, KC5RAI
