MARY LYNN KNOCHELMAN [ex WCKY-1530] (Cincinnati, OH) Subject: University Public Radio Stations Go Silent. Hi Jim…Today Friday August 18, 2017 is the final broadcast for WNKU 89.7 FM. The final broadcast for WNKU 104.1 FM occurred on August 2, 2017. Northern Kentucky University sold the stations to Bible Broadcast Corp, for $ 3.9 million. Before working at WCKY AM, I was a broadcaster on WVXU-FM (as a student) when it belonged to Xavier University. A lot of my WVXU co-workers are lamenting the loss of WNKU’s Public Radio format, including WVXU’s creator Dr. James King. He told us that he and an anonymous group had unsuccessfully tried to purchase WNKU from the university. So a sad ending for a non commercial radio station (WKNU 89.7FM) that began broadcasting in 1985.

BRAD MESSER [ex News director KILT-610/Houston, KLIF-1190/Dallas, KGB-1360/San Diego, KMET- 1490/Los Angeles, ND and Talk host KTSA-550/San Antonio] (San Antonio, TX) Subject: “Ashville”. Re. WKSF-FM, in North Carolina the town is spelled with an E — Asheville. When I did syndicated radio for Westwood One and wrote the column for Radio & Records, I had a home studio in a little house on our 27 acres in the Blue Ridge mountains about 25 miles north of Asheville (in Burnsville) so went to all those attractions and occasionally landed my (rented) Cessna there. That’s how I know about the spelling. Hope y’all don’t melt over there. San Antonio’s hitting close to 100 almost every day now, but in my suburb Garden Ridge it’s often about 5 degrees less hot (I would say “cooler” but…)

JAY WEAVER [ex KLBK – 1360, Lubbock; KBUY – 1540, Fort Worth]; Several Other Places] (DFW-Hurst, TX) Subject: Radio Short Stories. It’s interesting how a story by someone can set another’s mind to remembering another good story. I think that’s why I enjoy spending time with folks that were in radio because the stories can go on for ever. Thanks for sharing yours! Love to talk about and tell radio stories with a group of radio guys. Problem is there aren’t too many of us around anymore. But your column keeps things headed in that direction. For that, “Thanks, again!” Jay

JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-retires 2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: KIKK. Hey Jim, Best of all, at the annual Christmas party, Gloger and his wife gave out cash bonuses – a week’s pay for every year you had been there – in cash with a Christmas ribbon tied around it. Several people went home that night with several months pay – in cash. I learned later that it all came out of the station’s petty cash account, which meant the station didn’t report it to the IRS as paid salaries, and we didn’t have to report it as income. Such tax-dodgers we were. Those were the days. Jim Bell – Lufkin.

TRIVIA ANSWER: On August 19, 1955 WINS-1010 says it will not play copy white cover versions of R&B tunes. DJs must play Fats Domino’s Ain’t It A Shame, not Pat Boone’s.

CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, KILT-610, KLIF-1190, KBOX-1480, WKY-930 & WIXY-1260] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: The Greatest Top 40 Stations Of All Time! – Radio Ink If my memory is correct…My night show on WABC was rated number one in NY and Number three in Miami, Florida. I’m impressed…Chuck (

BOBBY VINTON [Roses Are Red (My Love) #1 for 4 weeks-1962] (April 16, 1935 – p) I saw an Elvis Presley movie Jailhouse Rock, where he gets out of jail and makes his own records and takes them to the radio stations himself. And then, he puts records in the store. After seeing that, I made records and put them in stores.
