JACK PARNELL [former Program Director/DJ on WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Glen Campbell. I’ve heard that about Glen…everybody who ever met him had the same things to say about him. I’m kinda surprised that he didn’t “drop by” WHBQ, but by that time, he was probably so busy that he didn’t have time. When WHBQ was in the Chisca Hotel, we had visitors often. You probably had visits during the late 50s and early 60s from Willie Nelson, who was “only” a songwriter then. He had written “Hello Walls” that Faron Young had a big hit with…both pop and country. In about 1963, he wrote “Funny How Time Slips Away”, which was also a huge hit. When he traveled, back then, he put on his 3 piece pin-striped suit, sported a ducktail haircut, very shiny shoes, and loved to take DJs out to lunch/dinner. He traveled often with a record promoter named Joe Saad, who was also from Texas, and he too was a great promoter. I think he worked for a huge label just over in AR that had many hits. It was Liberty Records, and was later bought by a big label in L.A.

JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-retires 2010] (Lufkin, TX) I was KIKK’s outside news reporter in the late 60s when it was still in Pasadena, and I can testify that Leroy Gloger was the most generous employer I ever worked for. He shared his success with the people who made it happen. Every month with more than 100 thousand dollars in advertising we got a 100 dollar bill and our paycheck in our pay envelope. He gave me a 200 dollar a month outside gasoline allowance and a company credit card that let me put that 200 dollar allowance in the bank. The morning newscaster, Milton Allen Graves, one of the nicest guys in the world, was trying to save money to buy a house. One morning he found an envelope in his mail cubby with a check for 5000 dollars signed by Leroy Gloger, who told Milton it was a gift to show his appreciation for his great work.

JAY WEAVER [KLBK – 1360, Lubbock; KBUY – 1540, Fort Worth]; Several Other Places] (DFW-Hurst, TX)Subject: Radio Short Stories. Hi Jim – Awhile back , you sent out a note asking for a few “Short Stories” that we might have to share with you for your readers on “Jim Rose Remembers Radio”. I remembered this one. Hope it’s what you have in mind. The first station I worked at was KPOS – Post, Texas. The station studios were located on the main drag. Top 40, daytimer. The first day I went to work, I went “on air” and started my play list. The number one song was “Pretty Woman” by Roy Orbison. I looked for the record. No record! The station owner was standing in the studio. I told him. He said, “Just a minute!” He ran out the door and in ten minutes returned with “Pretty Woman”. I asked him where the record was and he told me “At Woolworths, down the street!”
