AT&T MAY UNLOAD CNN Where are government monopoly breakers when we need them the most? Remember way back in January 8, 1982 when the federal government breaks up the Bell System monopoly? What a disaster that becomes! Well, AT&T is back at it again with a buyout of Time Warner for $85 billion. The rumor mill suggests that after they merge, AT&T’s top executives ponder divesting a few of Time Warner’s assets that includes cable news giant CNN, plus celebrity gossip site TMZ. CBS has its eye on CNN.

JEFF THOMPSON [NBC NEWS, 30 Rockefller Plaza-Thompson Comm] (Winston-Salem, NC) Subject: PS notes to my Texas Radio comments… Jim Bell also joined me later in NYC working at NBC Network Radio News. He’s a real career broadcast pro! He had also worked with me at KVVV-TV Ch. 16 in Alvin, TX where we pioneered Wall Street Journal’s “Stock Market Observer” TV program which launched me a year later to WOR-TV in NYC. Should’ve mentioned that too in my note. – JT

JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-retires 2010] (Lufkin, TX) At about the same time in the early sixties, businessman Leroy Gloger bought KRCT AM in Pasadena, changed the calls to KIKK, and changed Houston’s Country Music scene forever. Gloger wanted the Uptown Country style Chet Atkins was pioneering in Nashville, so he threw out the drawling hayseed announcers and hired polished professional uptown jocks from the Pop Music stations. Bailey was one of his first hires and his first Program Director. Bailey hired other pop jocks and lured the infamous “tell-it-like-it is” news-caster Richard Dobbyn away from KILT. Together Bailey and Dobbyn made KIKK AM and FM the most listened-to stations in Houston. Under Bailey’s guidance, KIKK trademarked the famous “Boot-I-Boot-Boot” logo and the “I’m a KIKKER” and “KIKK-UP Truck” bumper stickers. Bailey holds the distinct honor of sending the first Country music to the moon when he gave a cassette tape.

JAY WEAVER [ex KLBK–1360 Lubbock; KCUL-1540; KBUY-1540; KPCN-730) Several Other Places] (DFW-Hurst, TX) The death of Glenn Campbell is difficult even though we knew it was coming. When I was at KBUY in Fort Worth, Glenn had just arrived on the scene. The phone would “ring off of the hook” with requests for “By The Time I Get To Phoenix”, “Wichita Lineman” and the ten or so charted hits. It was uncanny! Bill and Corky Kuykendall were fortunate enough to book Campbell for a Saturday night appearance. Rhonda and I were there, of course! It was beautiful AND to top it off, Rhonda got to speak with Glenn backstage. My wife has never been close to being a “groupie”, but she will never forget that!
MIKE MARSHALL [former DJ on KNOK-970, KBOX-1480, KFJZ-1270, AFN-BERLIN, WFAA-820/570, KPRC-950, KXYZ-1320, KULF-790, KQUE FM, KBME-790] (Houston, TX) Subject: WFAA. Jim, its a privilege to have my birthday remembered in JRRR and an even bigger one to still be around to celebrate another one, my 79th. Leslie Wayne Hodges also mentioned that he listened to me on WFAA 820 at 8:05. I will forgive him a slight lapse of memory after 50 years. We switched from 570 to 820 at 7:00 and my show started at 7:05 after the news, two newscasts actually because 570 carried ABC news at :55 and 820 carried NBC on the hour. For your readers who don’t know about WFAA 570/820 it’s a long story. Google it.
TRIVIA ANSWER: On August 7, 1981 the FCC establishes General Radiotelephone Operator License, plus it ceases from issuing First and Second Class Operator licenses.
CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI, ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) I find I am listening less to the radio. But part of that is because the songs I like I already have in most cases. And those I don’t I can usually fake on my guitar by finding the words and chords using Google. I do not have Cable since my antenna from RCA is more than enough for me. Besides I like Radio better than TV. 73, Charles, KC5RAI
GROUCHO MARX (October 2, 1890 – August 19, 1977) I must say I find television very educational. The minute somebody turns it on, I go to the library and read a good book.
