WALT PINTO [WLML FM (100.3) Palm Beach, FL middays] (Hartford-Cobalt-Middlesex County, CT) Neil Young, who I worked with many years ago, forwarded me your column, yesterday. I hadn’t seen or heard of it until then, but it looked great. Yes, it’s WLML, and I VT it from here. It’s owned by Dick Robinson, who founded CT School of Broadcasting in the mid 60’s. I met him in ’67, when I joined WDRC in Hartford. 3 years later, ran his schools for 3 years and went back into radio. We’ve been friends for all this time. Have a great weekend. wp

JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-retires 2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Bill Bailey and KIKK. Hey Jim, this says a lot about the late Bill Bailey and how he turned KIKK AM and FM into a Country Music powerhouse. Bailey was one of the great Houston DJs before he hooked up with the Rodeo. He broke into Houston radio around 1960 at the old 790 KTHT AM, playing the popular MOR music of those years. His real name was Milton Stanley, and after bouncing around small markets for several years, he walked into KTHT one day asking for a job. The station had just hired another deejay named Bill Bailey and had promoted him heavily to Houston listeners. After two weeks, that Bill Bailey quit. Milton Stanley walked in looking for a job the same day, and after doing an audition tape, he was offered the job but he had to use the air name Bill Bailey.

MIKE MARSHALL [former DJ on KNOK-970, KBOX-1480, KFJZ-1270, AFN-BERLIN, WFAA-820/570, KPRC-950, KXYZ-1320, KULF-790, KQUE FM, KBME-790] (Houston, TX) I wasn’t a jock at KBOX (1480). I was a student in the Radio-TV department at TCU in the spring of 1960. The phone rang in the dept. head’s office. He wasn’t in so I answered it. It was Ray Carnay, the ND at KBOX looking for a weekend news person. I jumped in my car and headed straight over there. He gave me some copy to read, not on tape, in front of him. To my surprise he hired me. I had no experience in radio news gathering or writing. I started immediately. My mentor was an old Dallas newsman named Dick Moore. I was there a couple of months when John Box came down from St. Louis, heard me and told Ray to fire me. I wasn’t surprised because I knew was over my head, but the experience led to Dave Naugle hiring me for part time news at KFJZ and when I returned from the army in January, 64 I became a full time jock until I went to WFAA in March, 67. TRIVIA ANSWER: On August 4, 1966, some radio stations ban The Beatles records in response to John Lennon’s controversial claim that The Beatles are more popular than Jesus.
LESLIE WAYNE HODGES [ex KRCS-550 DJ] (Lake Livingston-Cold Spring, TX) Subject: Lee Douglas KLIF (1190) and WFAA (570). Is this the Lee Douglas on KLIF 1190 then WFAA 570 in 1968? Lee Douglas, July 1975 (source Pat Riley) Lee Douglas doing middays at 99X. The station as has a “Count The Music” contest going and a bell in the studio that Lee makes good use of while sort of kidding about it being a chime (a reference to Musicradio WABC–a major competitor). Lee became the program director of WXLO in September 1975. After 99X, Lee moved to WPEZ/Pittsburgh, then to WHB/Kansas City, then to KXOK/St. Louis where he went from program director to general manager. He has since moved on to various other stations including WCZY/Detroit, KHIT/Seattle, WOFX/Cincinnati and Salt Lake City.
