IHEART ATTEMPTS TO AVOID BANKRUPTCY One of the last radio properties taken over in private-equity megadeals of a decade ago, iHeartMedia still grapples with its 2006 debt in its leveraged buyout by Thomas H. Lee Partners and Bain Capital. In a near two-year long battle with Franklin Resources to win them over, iHeart Communications signs up a group of fund managers to convince bondholders that it is better to take the new deal than push iHeartMedia into bankruptcy.

JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ-560 DJ-Program Director] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Sadness. This isn’t necessarily about radio, but very close to it. I don’t know how many reading this watch “Bill Dance Outdoors” on tv; I’ve been the voiceover for the show for nearly 40 years now, and the producer, Tony Mack (Nee Tony McClure) has been his producer for at least 50 years. Tony died from lung cancer last week. He has always written and sent to me for voicing all the voiceover parts. Tony’s widow Robin, got us all together last night for a memorial dinner. All who have been involved, including Bill Dance himself, his family and all who are involved in the production of that great TV show. We enjoyed the food and fellowship and did a lot of reminiscing. Rest In Peace, Tony. Jack Parnell–former WHBQ-Memphis disk jockey and Program Director.

Before that (WFAA) TV was on Harry Hines and (WFAA-820/570) radio was in the Santa Fe building on Jackson Street.

MIKE SHANNON [ex KXOL-1360, WBAP-820] (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Subject: KVIL FM & KFWD FM. Hi Jim, yeah, I’ve heard plenty of stories and met a few KFWD-exes since I wrote that post in 2010! Amon Carter Field, once a major airport hub, was still in some level of operation by the time KFWD signed on around 1971. It had been renamed Great Southwest Airport, and was sitting in the shadow of the forthcoming DFW International Airport being built just across SH183. Still, a mobile home for a radio station??? Then again, the short-lived KJZY in nearby Denton put up a mobile home at its transmitter site in the late-1980s for use as a studio (and, speaking of, Hugh Lampman was a part of that effort.) I met Hugh once, and went to his funeral…but, sadly, I know his contributions to local radio are fading with time. You know I still have the JRRR archives posted on (dfwretroplex.com)
TRIVIA ANSWER: On July 20, 1940 Billboard magazine publishes its first singles record chart. The first #1 song is I’ll Never Smile Again by Frank Sinatra and Tommy Dorsey.
CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) The Great Galveston Hurricane was a Category 4 storm, with winds of up to 145 mph per hour, which made landfall on September 8, 1900, in Galveston, Texas, leaving about 6,000 to 12,000 dead. It was the deadliest hurricane in U.S. history. Unfortunately for the residents of Galveston, meteorology was far from an exact science at the end of the 19th century, and they received little warning about the storm’s strength. Even if one uses the low estimate of 6,000 victims, this storm remains the deadliest ever to hit the United States (www.chuckdunawaydj.com/).
