AJ’s Good Time Bar Four-Floor Honky Tonk Now Open

Alan Jackson’s AJ’s Good Time Bar Four-Floor Honky Tonk Now Open

Country music superstar and 2017 Country Music Hall of Fame inductee Alan Jackson has officially opened all four floors – including the rooftop – of AJ’s Good Time Bar, the first and only completely artist-owned establishment on Broadway in Nashville.

Filled floor-to-ceiling with items from Jackson’s own collection of career and personal memorabilia, the honky-tonk offers locals, fans and visitors an unparalleled experience, including a drink menu highlighted by “Alan’s Drink” – Jack and Water, which is Alan’s own beverage of choice.

Each of the four floors vary in “personality,” showcasing Jackson’s various interests and hobbies. “AJ’s Honky Tonk” is the first floor and prominently features live country music, while the second floor is known as the “GT Bar,” offering a sports and car-themed atmosphere, 12 big screen televisions and live, acoustic music. The “Hullbilly Bar” on the third floor is proving to be one of the venue’s biggest draws – it’s modeled after Jackson’s own Merritt Sportfish boat “Hullbilly,” seen in his “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” and “Long Way to Go” music videos. The third level’s stage features karaoke and live music, as well. The rooftop “Star Bar” caps AJ’s Good Time Bar, providing views of the historic Ryman Auditorium, Broadway, Nissan Stadium and all of downtown Music City.

“I always wanted to own a honky-tonk that plays real country music on Broadway that I could put my name on,” says Jackson. He purchased the building in August of 2016, opened the first two floors in October of 2016, and after intense renovations, opened the third floor and rooftop in May 2017.

The four-story entertainment mecca sits proudly near the corner of 4th Avenue and lower Broadway in the heart of Nashville – a stretch of road commonly called the “Honky Tonk Highway,” just like Jackson’s 2017 tour. Following the Honky Tonk Highway Tour’s sold-out stop at the city’s Ascend Amphitheater in May, Jackson and his eight-piece band made a surprise appearance on the first floor’s “AJ’s Honky Tonk” stage … and, as sole owner and visionary behind the venue, he’s known to make appearances at AJ’s during the week and when not on the road. Jackson is also a majority owner in ACME Feed & Seed, located just blocks away at 1st Avenue and Broadway.

JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ-560 DJ-Program Director] (Memphis, TN) Afternoon Jim: I mentioned that I’ve been doing Bill Dance Outdoors for 40 years. Ironically, I’m not nor ever been a fishing fan, but I love doing voiceovers work for it. About 10 years ago, I began doing voice work for White Tail Deer…enjoyed that two, but they changed to a different production company. Probably 25 years ago, I did a lot of sports hunting shows…4 fishing shows, and worldwide hunting, which was mainly a glorified hunting trip for camera buffs. JP

JOE FORD [Former KILT-610, KNUZ-1230, KLDE FM DJ] (Houston-Spring, TX) Subject: Society of Houston Broadcasters? Hi, Jim-at one time, we had the Houston Association of Radio, TV and Music Artists. HARTMA. Membership included Dave Ward, Dan Lovett, Bill Ham (then manager of ZZ Top) the late Ron Stone, Barry Kaye, Me, and just about anyone who was in the biz-past and present. It was open to radio, tv and musicians from the Houston area. It lasted about two years but due to apathy and too much work, plus very little leadership, we disbanded. Also, the Texas Radio Hall of Fame overshadowed it. We never received the 501C3 status we wanted but we did have an awards ceremony before going south!

CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI, ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) I try to separate The Performer from their views and their Life, until it is made an issue. Like when a Radio Personality has problems over Child Support, I might my self favoring the woman if the Judge. Not being married my views maybe different. I once had jury duty a woman had died using an IUD. Anyway the lawyers asked questions of the prospective jurors. I answered the questions as put to me, anyway the Judge had me come talk with the Lawyers and Him. I was then told to go home… I was 18 at the time. I think my answers would still be the same. Makes me think of a song done by Les McCann and Eddie Harris, Compared To What. 73, KC5RAI

TONY LAWRENCE [WFAA-570/KKDA-730] (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Subject: The past comes alive… Yes Jim, I followed you (Dallas, TX) at both KPCN (730) and WFAA (820/570). Irene Runnels hired me in ’68 at KPCN and Charlie (Van) about a year later at WFAA (my dates, like my memory are approximate). I was part of the last crew on 820 from WFAA until the final switch at midnight on April 30, 1970. I came to KKDA from Tyler where I followed Bill Young, (Jimmy) Rabbit and (Randy) Robbins. I was also in Tyler on KLTV-TV with John Bass and Kip Kippenbrock.

TRIVIA ANSWER: On May 13, 1897, from his Fraserburgh base, Guglielmo Marconi sends the world’s first ever wireless communication over open sea 600 miles from Fraserburgh, Scotland to Poldhu, South Cornwall, England, UK.

CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: just a thought. I checked my emails and discovered…Billboard writer and friend Claude Hall passed away…as did my inspiration to get into the radio business, Paul Berlin…daily we are reminded of our own mortality …so we should be enjoying each day to the fullest…fortunately, I met my life’s companion 36 years ago and married her 33 years ago. I absolutely couldn’t be more happy and I adore my wife… life is good and I’m not even close to letting it go…love to all…I hope you’re as happy as I am… Chucky
