BILL GARDNER [former Drive Time Personality on KVIL FM, KCBQ-1170, KSAN FM, WFIL-560, KOOL FM] (Las Vegas, NV) Hey Jim….Hello from Las Vegas! Thanks for sharing the sad news regarding the Friday passing of Claude Hall. As they used to say, I heard it first here on Saturday morning thanks to you. So glad that I had the chance to visit Claude Hall and get to know him better earlier this year. In town for a radio event earlier this year, my old pals Joey Reynolds and “Shotgun Tom” Kelly surprised me with a call me at home one night. The next day, Joey called Claude, and convinced this very private man to let us come over to his home here in Las Vegas. He was a very gracious host to the three of us for the evening. We even reminisced about winning our prized Billboard Magazine Major Market Air Personality of the Year awards long ago, and what a memorable thrill that was. You could tell from the whole evening’s conversation, just how much Claude loved radio and the people who were part of it. He and Joey Reynolds were almost like family. And I join you in saying I miss him already. I’ve posted a picture of the four of us on my web site as this week’s “New, Old Radio Picture.” Bill Gardner

JIMMY JAY [ex WMEX-1510 DJ] (Quincy, MA) Subject: WMEX-1510. Jim, Growing up as a kid I fell asleep listening to WMEX on my transistor radio. It was the great Arnie Ginsburg Show. I always wanted to be a WMEX good guy. I first met him when I was a preteen and my parents took me to the radio station. To this day we are friends. I had him on the last show before we signed off. Can you imagine how I feel now, I wanted to be a WMEX good guy and never thought I would be the last. Jim Callahan the other last Good Guy and I are now, speechless. Jimmy Jay (

TOM ELLIS [ex WABC TV NYC, WBZ TV Boston, MA; KONO TV San Antonio, TX news anchor] (Boston-Cape Cod-East Sandwich-Newton, MA) Hi, Jim, Your JRRR #1632 mentions the death of Stan McKenzie, former owner/GM of KWED (1580) in Seguin. When I was working at KVET (1300) in Austin, while also completing my last semester at the University of Texas in January of ’58, Stan asked the director of Radio House at the University to recommend someone to work on air for him at KWED. Luckily, my name was suggested, and Stan offered me the job, which I accepted. Soon I was signing on KWED at daylight Sunday through Friday mornings. What I really want to say is that in my almost 60 years of on air Radio and Television experience, I never had a better boss than Stan McKenzie. He was kind, gentle, full of life, generous and encouraging…and I never saw him without a smile on his face. Simply put – he was the best. Tom

TRIVIA ANSWER: On July 6, 1924, in an experiment, the first photo goes across the Atlantic ocean by radio from the United States to England.

TONY LAWRENCE [ex DJ on WFAA-570 & KKDA-730] (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Subject: The past comes alive… I never saw one but Denson Walker related the one (temper tantrum) about the production when he was still a salesman. The first time I met Ted (Cassidy) he had to use only three fingers to shake my hand. He could sit up straight at the console and slip start the back turntable while still on mike. I still have dreams about WFAA (820-570) and probable always will.

COLONEL WALTER E. KURTZ (Apocalypse Now – 1979) I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. That’s my dream; that’s my nightmare. Crawling, slithering, along the edge of a straight razor… and surviving.
