JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-retires 2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Arch Campbell. Hey Jim, Arch Campbell left WJLA in DC because he retired. Granted, a change of ownership helped him make the decision, but after 40 years and getting into his 70s, it was time to go. I worked with Arch at KTBC AM/FM in Austin back in the late 60s, where he was known for his droll sense of humor. He could find something humorous anywhere he looked, and it was huge fun working with him till he went on to greater things in Dallas and Washington. I wish him well in his retirement. TONY LAWRENCE [ex WFAA-570, KPCN-730] (D/FW-Arlington, TX) Subject: The past comes alive… I was almost 14 and had a vision of being in radio. Wanted to see as much as possible. The 3900 Harry Hines is the building where 13 is located today. In fact, when WFAA came on the air in 49 their calls were KERA-TV. The old time radio/people I worked with said that once 820 was on the 2nd floor of the Adolphus and 570 was in the lobby of the old Baker Hotel. At change time the announcer had to haul ass down the stairs, across Commerce street to be on the air on 570. A piano player filled in. The XTMR for 570 was on New York in Arlington so the legal ID was “WFAA 570 Dallas-Fort Worth with studios in Dallas , transmitter in Arlington, a broadcast service of the Dallas Morning News. That was before the days of the “switcher we worked with.

JOANIE GREEN [KPRC TV CH 2, KZEW FM, KFWD FM, KNOK FM, KAUM FM, KILT FM, KNUZ-1230, Metro Traffic, Houston Taping for the Blind] (Tulsa, OK) Subject: KFWD. Jim, I worked at KFWD (FM) when it was in a mobile home. It was on 360 just south of 183 while the building of DFW just north of 183 was underway. Actually, KFWD consisted of 2 mobile homes ~ one was for the air and production studios and the other was for sales and management. I worked the 6-midnight shift and when the SurTran buses would shut down for the night, they would pass by the KFWD trailers and the turntables would rumble like crazy as the buses drove by and parked behind the station. Music Video Out for Glen Campbell’s “Adios” Watch

New Music Video Released for Glen Campbell’s “Adios”- Watch

The video for “Adiós,” the bittersweet Jimmy Webb-penned title track of country legend Glen Campbell’s acclaimed farewell album is out now. Directed by Peter Zavadil, the award-winning director behind videos for Eric Church, Lady Antebellum and The Black Keys, the video features iconic archival videos and photos of the Rhinestone Cowboy interspersed between the story of his guitar journeying from Nashville to California where it plays its last note. It begins with Glen’s daughter Ashley Campbell handing off the guitar in Nashville and culminates with his grandson Jeremy Olson giving the six string an emotional sendoff.

“In my view, “Adios” is Glen’s farewell to the spotlight. I wanted the music video to reflect those sentiments,” says Zavadil. “The guitar is a symbol of Glen’s legacy…a ‘spiritual baton’ as it were, carried on by all those influenced by his music, beginning with one of his daughters and ending with one of his grandsons. The fact that no one will ever hold a match to Glen’s skill on the guitar is memorialized by giving his guitar a proper ‘Viking Funeral’ on the California coast. The project truly was an honor and an adventure.”

Glen’s daughter Ashley, who is following her father’s footsteps and performs banjo and sings backing vocals throughout the Adiós album, opens the video by passing off Glen’s guitar and thus starting its last tour. “My father’s music has touched so many people’s lives so I hope that this video will resonate with a lot of people,” says Ashley. “Music moves through us all in different ways, lighting a fire in each of us. That fire will always be burning as music keeps moving and as each of us continues to pass the torch.”

Several generations of the Campbell family are featured in the video as it concludes with Glen’s grandson, Jeremy Olson, in an emotional final goodbye. Olson says: “My grandfather is a man I’ve loved and admired my entire life. The emotion when dealing with a project that is his last, sung his unique way, really hit home and brought back all the amazing memories he and I have shared. This single and album truly encompasses his career and is something I know he would be proud of, which is why I couldn’t be more honored to be involved.”

Glen’s farewell album, Adiós, was released on June 9th via UMe to universal acclaim. In the U.S., the album debuted in the Top 40 of the Billboard 200 giving Glen his 16th Top 40 album and his 19th Top 10 Country Record of his astonishing career. The album, which caps off an extraordinary career that has spanned more than six decades and 50 million albums sold, has been hailed as one of his best. It has received an incredible reaction around the world from the likes of Rolling Stone, USA Today, NPR, Billboard and many others.

Adiós was recorded in 2012 following Glen’s “Goodbye Tour” which he launched after revealing he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. As Glen’s wife of 34 years, Kim Campbell, explains in the album’s touching liner notes, “Glen’s abilities to play, sing and remember songs began to rapidly decline after his diagnosis in 2011. A feeling of urgency grew to get him into the studio once again to capture what magic was left. It was now or never.” She concludes, “What you’re hearing when listening to Adiós is the beautiful and loving culmination of friends and family doing their very best for the man who inspired, raised, and entertained them for decades – giving him the chance to say goodbye to his fans, and put an amazing collection of songs onto the record store shelves.”

Produced by longtime friend and bandmate, Carl Jackson, the 12-track collection features songs from some of his favorite songwriters like Jimmy Webb, his longtime collaborator behind some of his biggest hits like “Wichita Lineman,” “By The Time I Get To Phoenix,” and “Galveston.” Other songwriters featured are Willie Nelson, who duets on his classic, “Funny How Time Slips Away,” Bob Dylan, Fred Neil, Roger Miller, Jerry Reed and Dickey Lee.

Campbell who turned 81 in April, is in the final stages of Alzheimer’s disease. He lives in Nashville where he is surrounded by his loving family and getting the very best of care.

Shania Twain Releases New Song, “Poor Me” Watch

Shania Twain Releases New Song ‘Poor Me’

Last night (June 20), the best-selling female artist in the history of country music—Shania Twain—released a new song, “Poor Me,” the second track made available from her upcoming fifth studio album, Now.

Shania wrote “Poor Me”—along with all of the other songs on this new album—as an act of independence. “I was determined to do it alone. Because I had been in a co-writing scenario for all those years, and this was going to be the first time after all that time that I’ve written solely alone, so it’s all about independence, and I needed to learn that about myself, I needed to rediscover that about myself.”

After releasing the song last night, Shania said, “Even though it has the most sadness to it, as a songwriter, it was creatively very fun to write ‘Poor Me.’

Dont Expect to Hear Miranda Talking Politics on Stage

Don’t expect to hear Miranda Lambert talking politics on stage

“I am a 100 percent believer in not ever using the platform that I’ve built for anything other than music,” the singer told Billboard magazine when asked about penning political tunes. “I don’t want to go to a show and hear somebody preach about their opinions.”

Even though Lambert, 33, has performed with politically outspoken country artists like the Dixie Chicks and Kid Rock, she said bringing the debate to the stage doesn’t accomplish much.

“It’s so divided [in politics], you can’t win anyway,” the singer said. “For someone to agree with you, and now you’ve spoken your piece and pissed off many other people, just for one person to go, ‘She’s right’? It doesn’t do any good.”

JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ-560 DJ-Program Director] (Memphis, TN) Jim: I get email from people sometimes who say things like: “Boy, I’ll bet you’re a great fisherman, learning all that stuff from work with Bill Dance…” What they don’t know is that I’m not a fisherman at all, but I love doing the voiceovers for Bill. About 4o years ago, I was doing 3 or 4 different fishing shows for other master fishermen. One of them even flew me to L.A. to do some special shows, and various commercials Nor, am I a hunter, but a few years ago I did all the voiceover work for the White Tail Deer TV shows. I did them for about 4 seasons, then the show switched to a new production company, and that company chose one of their own talents. At the same time, I was flying back and forth occasionally to Pittsburgh where they had a very special booking agency where they booked safaris…that was also fun. Their bookings were twofold and worldwide. Many “camera only” bookings were being booked by them too. I’ve done a lot of interesting voiceovers for a lot of shows. JP
