CHUCK DUNAWAY [Former DJ on WABC-770, KLIF-1190, KBOX-1480 & KILT-610] (Houston-Katy, TX)Subject: my radio Idol has passed… Paul Berlin has died. Paul was my inspiration to get into the radio DJ business in the first place. I’d go to the KNUZ studios after school and Paul would allow me to stand in the control room while he worked. The last time I saw Paul was at the Houston radio lunch. They are so much fun to attend. Kendall and I will be at the next one for sure…Chuck (www.chuckdunawaydj.com/)

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES [Prior KRCS DJ] (Lake Livingston, TX) Hi Leslie here. Saddens me Adam West, who originated the role of TV’s ‘Batman’, dies at 88 after battling leukemia. WBAP 820 Fort Worth 3:38 p.m. While in the back seat of mom and dad’s 1957 Chevrolet Belair mom had picked me up from the 4th grade East Side Elementary. Person on air on WBAP said listen to this. The Program Director just handed me the theme song to a new TV series. Sounded to me like the singers are saying “That Man”. You should have heard the crisp deep bass that AM radio rear speaker had. Miss when AM radio had the crisp, deep, massaging sound. Really miss this. sounded as deep as thunder sounds.

MIKE MARSHALL [Ex DJ on KQUE FM, KFJZ-1270, WFAA-820/570] (Houston, TX) Jim, After I was released from active duty in January, 1964, I went back to KFJZ where I had worked part-time while I was at TCU and before I was drafted. Bill Enis was the PD. Mark Stevens did afternoons and Randy Robins did nights. The station signed off at 1AM and Bill offered me 11-1AM for $100 a week. When Randy left for St. Louis, I moved to something till 1, I don’t remember what time it started. In the summer of 1966, they decided to stay on all night. I accepted that shift mainly because it gave me time off during the day and the evening, so I started midnight till 5:30 or 6 when George Erwin was supposed to come in. He rarely made it on time. Khan Hamon took over 7-12. One of the truly enterprising sales guys sold the entire show, not to American Airlines like Music till Dawn, but to the Sunbeam Appliance Service Company, a little shop on Camp Bowie Boulevard. I ran something like 8 spots per hour, half of them live, informing people who had broken Sunbeam appliances that they could take them there to have them repaired. They didn’t sell appliances, only repaired them. I tired of it pretty quickly and applied to WFAA. Charlie Van hired me and I started there doing weekends and production weekdays in March of 1967. Mike
