MIKE SHANNON [Navteq traffic WBAP-820, WFAA TV CH 13] (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Subject: Barry Kilgore dead! Hi Jim, Sad to report that TX radio pro Barry Kilgore has died. He was working for KLDE near San Angelo and was discovered by the station’s owner Monday morning (6/19). Here’s a piece from his LinkedIn page listing many of his former stations: “I’ve worked successfully at too many radio /TV stations to mention them all but notably in the 1980’s, 90’s & 2000’s, KTRH, KQUE FM, KNUZ AM, KRBE AM/FM (all in Houston). In the 1970’s I was Program Director/Afternoon Drive personality at #1 rated KHFI-FM (Austin’s Super Rock K98 !!), KOKE AM/FM, Austin when we won the Billboard Magazine Trendsetter of the Year Award and was Program Director/Morning & Afternoon Drive personality KTEM in Temple, Texas. Before that I worked as Production Director & Afternoon Drive Personality at KEFM & KEEE in Nacogdoches, Texas. I worked for J.C. Stallings, the stations owner and former President of the National Association of Broadcasters. J.C. brought in people like Charlie Van Dyke, Paul Kirby (both from Chicago radio WLS & WCFL respectively) and Bill Young of KILT Houston to teach me how to be. Great learning experience.” (www.dfwRetroplex.com)

Houston, Texas – Laus Deo
The den was toy- strewn; there were supper dishes in the sink . A pile of laundry waited to be washed, while the dryer was full of the last load. I didn’t have the traditional Southern New Year’s meal- black-eyed peas, cornbread and hog jowl-planned; I didn’t even have milk for breakfast . Wearily I tossed scattered toys into the yellow clothes basket with the broken handle. New Year’s Day. Bah humbug! I felt someone watching me and turned. In the dark room stood Julie my oldest, in her pink nightgown with the top button missing. Sleepy eyed she asked so softly, “Why are you up so early, Mama”
“I’m trying to get a head start. It’s New Year’s day. You know what that means?” Silence- I assumed she’d chosen to ignore my strand early-morning question. “My teacher said that every day is the first day of the rest of your life. Is that what you mean, Mama ?”
I stood up straight and looked at her— really looked at her. A smile found my face. “Yep, Julie Babe, your teacher’s a smart lady.”
