BILL CONWAY [Former PD/OM KOIT FM] (San Diego, CA) Subject: Texas Boy Retires. Jim, I just want to pass along news of the retirement of Seymour Texas native Lee Douglas who wraps up 13 years as PD/PM Drive at KFRG Riverside. Lee’s impressive career includes WFAA (820/570) where we met 47 years ago, KLIF (1190), WMYQ (FM), WOKY (920), WXLO 99X, KXOK (630), KYCY (FM) Young Country, WCZY (FM), WCKG (1530) and KFRG (FM) among others. He worked with Robert L Collins, Al Casey, George Wilson, Dick Purtan, Jay Thomas, Bob Barry, Steve Dahl, Jim Ryan, Erica Farber, Steve Weed, Jay Meyers and many others. Lee Douglas is a real radio guy, a smart guy and knows how to make his station just sound good. I could not have been successful if I had not his friendship over the last 47 years. When Lee was in New York at 99X and I was in Lake Charles, he still treated me as an equal. He treated everybody that way. Congrats to Lee and his adorable wife Barbara on a great run. Bill Conway

MIKE MARSHALL [ex KQUE FM, KFJZ-1270, WFAA-820/570] (Houston, TX) Subject: Tony Booth. I am interested to hear Tony Booth’s story how he was drafted and wound up with American Forces Radio in Korea. Draftees are sent where they are needed. Usually the army needs more truck drivers than disc jockeys. I was drafted in January, 1962 as part of a large army buildup following the Berlin Crisis in August, ’61 after The Wall went up. After I received orders transferring me to Germany, I just happened to make contact with Jim Wright in Washington who was not only my representative from Fort Worth, but a member of the Armed Services Committee. He made a couple of phone calls and before I shipped out, literally, on a WWII troop ship to Germany, I was assigned to American Forces Network, Europe headquarters in Frankfurt. In early 1963, I was transferred to AFN Berlin where I did the morning show. It was called by the mundane name of Wake Up Easy from a commonly used jingle package. Good Morning, Berlin would have been more appropriate but I guess nobody thought of it. Anyway, I would probably have been sent to a tank outfit in Kaiserslautern had it not been for Congressman Wright’s influence. Even though he passed away in 2015, I thank him to this day. Mike Marshall

AMY MARIE WALZ (author) We all lose friends.. we lose them in death, to distance, and over time. But even though they may be lost, hope is not. The key is to keep them in your heart, and when the time is right, you can pick up the friendship right where you left off. Even the lost find their way home, when you leave the light on.
