TONY BOOTH [KAYC-1450, AFKN [Seoul, Korea] 1968, KDOK-1330, KLIF-1190, WLEE-1480] (Richmond, VA) Thanks Jim. Didn’t realize you are in Houston. I am in Richmond, Virginia but it all started in 1962 at KFTV in Paris, Texas. I was 13, a freshman in hi school and took JR Horne’s afternoon show who took off to Austin to enroll as a freshman at UT/Austin. I did four years at the hometown station and, upon graduation in 1966, Al Caldwell hired me at KAYC, Beaumont. I did afternoons there til the end of 1967 when I was drafted into the military. I was stationed in Seoul, Korea and did ‘Good Morning, Korea’ for two years. Tony

KEN DOWE [CEO Service Broadcasting #1 KKDA FM (104.5) / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Note from Frank (Haley). I believe Chuck (Boyles) died a number of years ago. Jim Rose may have heard more news by now. Seems Chuck returned to the Northeast after leaving 1190. In radio, I guess. However, he had a law degree. I had forgotten the two of you worked together. Bill (Stewart) created Chuck’s show (The Snake Pit) after noting the success Joe Pine was having in L.A. These guys were a bit like talk-shows hosted by shock jocks. Eventually, the uniqueness wore off in Dallas, and Chuck was moved into the National PD position. Principally, due to his attorney status. He was a nice guy, but Chuck was most gifted as a talent. And, he had the mental acuity to work with Gordon. But, the creative and leadership roles of the trifecta GBM demanded were not as satisfactory. I liked him. Heck of an on-air talent. kd

CHUCK DUNAWAY [WABC-770, KLIF-1190, KBOX-1480 & KILT-610] (Houston-Katy, TX) Chuck Boyles began his talk routine before KLIF (1190) when he was under the Program Directorship of Danny Williams in OKC. I followed Chuck on the air in OKC and it took some time to bring the audience back into the music mold…but we did. It worked in OKC before Dallas. Danny Williams was famous for hiring good talent and then letting he do what they did best. WKY was a very successful radio station. I got a 73 share when at WKY…good enough to get me to NYC…those were great radio days with great memories…fading a bit each day. Ken Dowe remains one of the best programmers ever. I am pleased to be the one who found this rare talent while he was in San Diego and bring him to Dallas via K-BOX…at 82 years of age I get a little teary eyed to think back on those days with such fabulous memories and wonderful radio folks…radio was so great in those top 40 pioneering days…whatever we did was right…experimenting was the rule of the day…most of it stuck too. I don’t want to sound like an old fuddy duddy, there was a hit song that encapsulates it for me…”those were the days my friend, we thought they’d never end”…thanks for your column Jim…Chuck Dunaway (

TRIVIA ANSWER: On June 3, 1949 Dragnet with Jack Webb as Sgt. Joe Friday first airs on radio on KFI-640 in Los Angeles, CA. A month later, Dragnet goes national on NBC Radio and continues through 1957. In December 1951, Dragnet goes on TV.

CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI, ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Jazz and Classical Music. I like that even a Boombox can get interesting stations not usually heard. Tonight getting a station from Ardmore on 90.3. They were doing Jazz and now doing Classical Music. My Boombox is a Sony. I can record my DX for later. I find it interesting that different radios can hear different stations not picked up by others covering the same bands. 73, KC5RAI, Charles

P. J. O’ROURKE (November 14, 1947 – p) I am no stranger to loud music. I’ve been to a Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels concert. I once dated a woman with two kids.

Jack Blanchard’s Column Recalls Old School Buddy

Jack Blanchard & Misty Morgan an American country music duo from Florida.

Composed of guitarist/keyboardist/vocalist Jack Blanchard and his wife, keyboardist/vocalist Misty Morgan.

And now Jack Blanchard recalls ……..THE OLD SCHOOL BUDDY

There was this kid in grammar school…
I’ll call him Rick, to protect the guilty.
He beat me at everything.
In the 100-yard dash I outran everybody except Rick.
He had the top grade average of all the boys.
I was in there somewhere close.

In the graduation picture, guess who sat front and center.
Rick was Class President, a job nobody ever considered me for.
I was too weird…always making jokes.
I was in the back row looking at Ellen Weinheimer’s boobs.

The trouble is, we were friends.
He was a really nice guy, humble and friendly.
He seemed to take second place to me socially.
Things change.

A few years ago,
I called another school buddy I got from Buffalo Information.
He had died.
I talked to his son and he gave me Rick’s phone number.

I figured I’d brag about my musical career, the Grammy nomination,
and the millions of record sales.
Maybe before we both kick the bucket
I could get JUST ONE over on him.

A woman answered and I heard her say:
“Some guy wants to talk to the doctor.”
He came on the line
and it took me about five minutes to explain who I am.
He hadn’t been thinking about me.

He said, “I went to Notre Dame on an athlete’s scholarship,
and became head professor at Harvard Medical School,
and invented a whole new school of medicine.”

He then told me that his offspring were all doctors,
lawyers, or something equally annoying.
I was just happy mine were out of jail.

He said : “Let’s keep in touch” and I said: “Sure”.
I didn’t mention my music career.
After all these years, he got me again, and I’d asked for it.

He wrote to me once on Harvard business stationery.
He never gave me his home address.
I never contacted him again, but he later contacted me by email.
He was very friendly this time… the old Rick.
He even sent me a picture of us together at graduation.

We emailed back and forth a few times,
and then my messages to him started bouncing back.
Rick has disappeared again.
I have a feeling he volunteered for the Witness Protection Plan
to get away from me.
