KEN DOWE [CEO Service Broadcasting #1 KKDA FM (104.5) / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Responding to your friend’s inquiry. Jim, He is probably thinking of Chuck Boyles (“The Snakepit”) on KLIF/ 1190 in the ’60s. Bill Stewart created this highly rated, flame throwing, talk show aired at 10 each evening. An unheard of and unexpected programming achievement. Chuck’s was an unruly talk program with no restraints, tossed into the middle of one of the greatest Top 40 stations of all time. Chuck was a great talent, and Bill Stewart had few peers. Just another sparkling magic act, presented by Gordon McLendon. Ken

MIKE SIMPSON [ex KLIF-1190, KRLD-1080/FM/TV, WFAA-AM, KDSX-Sherman/Denison, KIKN-Corpus Christi, KVET-Austin, KFJZ-1270/Texas State Network and KVIL-FM 3 separate times] (Sacramento, CA) Subject: KLIF “Feisty” Talk Show Host of the mid ’60’s. I wonder of Stan might be talking about Chuck Boyles? A VERY controversial guy. I was 16 years old and working part-time for KLIF. The station anonymously received a B&W photo of Chuck, sitting at the board in the Master Control Room at Triangle Point. The pic was taken from across Commerce Street, right outside the door to “The Cellar”, a somewhat legendary and fairly “dangerous” music venue and bar. Super-imposed across Chuck’s head were the cross hairs of a gun sight! From that night forward, the curtains of the control room were drawn shut!
TRIVIA ANSWER: On June 5, 1954 Billboard magazine reports that major record labels begin to supply radio stations with 45-RPM promo singles rather than 78-RPM singles.
DON SUNDEEN [DJ/Hi Records promotion/TV ad production] (Dallas, TX) Hi Jim, just read Stan Deyo’s question about the talk show host at KLIF (1190) early on, perhaps he means Rod Roddy who went on to Fame and Fortune in Hollywood as a Quiz Show announcer. Or perhaps it was the great Ed Bush who was ahead of the curve on controversial talk radio and interviewed many Kennedy Conspiracy folks and I believe also delved into UFO’s like Art Bell, Ed though wasn’t a little crazy. MICHAEL HARRISON (Talkers Magazine Publisher) He isn’t just a political talk show host, he’s a showman.
