BAYOU CITY RADIO LEGEND PASSES INTO THE NIGHT From the 1950s to the 1970s Houston, TX radio listeners dance to the bop sounds of Paul Berlin on Top 40 KNUZ-1230. From 1974 to 1997 Paul eases back a bit with a softer touch music on sister station KQUE FM. In 1997, Paul takes his EZ Listening radio show over to KSEV-700. In 2001, Berlin’s radio magic relocates to KBME-790. On Thursday, June 22, 2017 Bayou City concert promoter and popular radio DJ Paul Berlin enters Heaven’s Gates at 86.

KENT BURKHART [former Radio consultant with Lee Abrams-KXOL-1360, WQXI-790] (Atlanta, GA) Two of my favorite memories about Tony “the Tiger” Taylor are as follows. Tony was a sensational golfer, and he decided that he could make a fair golfer of me (the world’s worst golfer). He was not successful, but I do remember playing a match with him at Chastain Park in Atlanta in which I accidentally hit an accurate shot that lodged in some grass that had a steep slant. Three feet, sharp curve!!! I accidentally hit it perfectly into cup. Tony said “I can’t believe it”. I couldn’t either but it was so!!! The next event is when Tony left WQXI to go to the “major markets” and ended up working for Bill Drake’s station in New York. Tony called me in Atlanta from NYC and said “Hey, you told me to be a personality and SMILE. Bill Drake told me NOT to smile!!! Which is it????” You’ll never believe what I told him!!!!! My last contact with Tony was in the past year. He was in his car driving to give someone in north Georgia a golf lesson. “When you have time lets have lunch” I said. He said “Let’s touch base after the summer”. It will never happen. He was a great guy and broadcaster. He is already missed. Kent Burkhart.

BILL CONWAY [Previous PD/OM Entercom KOIT FM] (San Diego, CA) I’m not sure if that was him (Lee Douglas). I don’t know when he went to KLIF (1190) from WFAA (820/570) and then returned in 1970 about the time I started. He was replaced at KLIF (1190) by Dickie Heatherton. At the time Lance Rentzel was still starring with the Cowboys and Dick’s sister Joey was Lance’s high profile wife. He still harbors bad feelings toward the Cowboys because of that but I work on him. Lee and Barbara are about 20 minutes away from our retirement home in Palm Springs so we hang out a lot. Bill Conway

I also was the stadium announcer for the Texas Rangers and did a syndicated show out of PAMS of Dallas called “Auto Rock.” In 1974 right after I got married (still am to Marsha after almost 43 years), Ralph Beaudin (who put KQV on the map as well as WLS and later created the four news services at ABC/News) hired me as PD at KBBC/Phoenix. After almost four years there, I went to WFBG/Altoona, Pennsylvania as PD/Ops Manager as well as National Program Director for the Gilcom Corporation.

TRIVIA ANSWER: Glenn Wallichs Capitol records manager mints the art of record promotion when he sends free copies of new record releases to radio DJs on June 4th, 1942.

BUD BUSCHARDT [WFAA TV CH 8 Director, WFAA-570 Oldies show, ABC sat radio DJ] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Paul Berlin. Jim, I listened to Paul Berlin on KNUZ back when DJs had theme songs. His theme was “The Object Of My Affection” which he continued to use even in the first days of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Back when DJs chose their own music, Paul was the first DJ I heard play Chuck Berry’s “Maybellene” and “I Remember” (better known as “Doodie Woo”) by Wee Willie Wayne. “Doodie Woo” was so well associated with Berlin that I think he played it on every station following KNUZ. The record never charted locally or nationally …. and probably would not test well either but Houston audiences loved it. Anybody remember “Paul Berlin’s Record Room” in the Kirby Drive-Greenbrier-area? Can’t remember the name of the shopping center but there was a Lewis & Coker Supermarket in it. I was at the shop on opening day and have been trying to remember the name of records I bought that day. Bud

Kelsea Ballerini’s Tragic “Legends” Music Video

Sneak Peak of Kelsea Ballerini’s Tragic “Legends” Music Video

Continuing her climb as Country’s newest female superstar, Black River Entertainment artist Kelsea Ballerinireleases the heart-swelling video for her brand new single, “Legends,” tomorrow (6/29).

Partnering with iHeartRadio, the stunning video will premiere across all iHeartCountry station sites, bringing Ballerini’s tale of “crazy, tragic, epic” love to life as a deeply moving short film. Directed by Jeff Venable, the clip unveils a couple’s entire romantic history – from the first stolen glances to its tear-jerking conclusion, with all their tender triumphs and surprises in between.

Singing boldly from the edge of a majestic, windswept ocean cliff in Big Sur, California, Ballerini captivates in a graceful, sophisticated gown, stepping into the unknown on the next leg of her own legendary journey and giving fans a sneak peek at her new look in the process.

“Legends” is the first taste of Ballerini’s highly anticipated second album, with more details about the project coming soon. Produced by Forest Glen Whitehead and Jason Massey, the track was co-written by Ballerini with Whitehead and Hillary Lindsey and is currently poised to make a strong debut on the Country radio charts.

It follows the unprecedented success of Ballerini’s debut album, THE FIRST TIME, which landed inside the Top 5 of Billboard’s Country Albums chart and spawned three consecutive PLATINUM and GOLD #1 singles with “Love Me Like You Mean It,” “Dibs,” and “Peter Pan” – marking the only time in Country history a female artist has hit #1 with her first three singles. Her fourth release from THE FIRST TIME – the fun and flirty GOLD-certified “Yeah Boy” – rose to the lofty height of #3 on the Country radio airplay charts.

The young star is currently opening shows in front of massive, early-arriving crowds on Lady Antebellum’s YOU LOOK GOOD WORLD TOUR, crisscrossing the country this summer and visiting new fans in the U.K., Ireland, and Europe in October.

Gretchen Wilson Releases First Album In Four Years

Gretchen Wilson Releases First Album In Four Years

Country music singer Gretchen Wilson has released her seventh studio album titled ‘Ready To Get Rowdy

It’s been over a decade since Gretchen Wilson exploded onto the scene with her rockin’ brand of country music and now she is back after a 3-year hiatus with an album that her fans are sure to love ‘Ready To Get Rowdy’

The “Redneck Woman” singer has gone back to her roots with her latest release titled Ready To Get Rowdy, and she couldn’t be more excited about getting back out on the stage and back to the “party”.

“Listening to this record in its entirety will make you believe good ol’ country music hasn’t gone anywhere,” Wilson said. “These 12 songs are as ‘Gretchen Wilson’ as I get. The Redneck is back!”

The new project is a reflection of the artist she started out as, a woman that sang about partying, rednecks, and being unapologetic about lacking “lady-like” skills. That was a stark contrast to other female country singers then and now, which is what made fans gravitate to Wilson.

Wilson is going to pull out all the stops with this new project, including a live show that is going to get her fans ready to rock! “This tour is not going to be an evening with [Gretchen Wilson],” Wilson confirmed. “It’s more like a Skynyrd concert; on your feet, partying, drinking beer and raising hell for the next 60 to 90 minutes.”

The first single from the album, “Rowdy”, was released last year and Wilson recalled what made her choose that song as the lead off track. “I thought to myself, ‘Why are you coming back? What do you really want to say?’ So I had to answer that question and it was like, ‘because I’m ready! I’ve been off for a few years, I’ve done what I needed to do at home and it’s time. I’m ready to get rowdy’” she exclaimed.

Google Hit With Record 2.42 Billion Euro Fine

EU Antitrust Regulators Hit Google With Record 2.42 Billion Fine

EU antitrust regulators hit Alphabet (GOOGL.O) unit Google with a record 2.42-billion-euro ($2.7 billion) fine on Tuesday, indicating they will likely take a tough line with the company in two other ongoing cases. The European Commission said the world’s most popular internet search engine has 90 days to stop favoring its own shopping service or face a further penalty of up to 5 percent of Alphabet’s average daily global turnover. The Commission found that Google had systematically given prominent placement in searches to its own comparison shopping service and demoted those of rivals in search results.

Slideshow preview image“What Google has done is illegal under EU antitrust rules. It denied other companies the chance to compete on the merits and to innovate. And most importantly, it denied European consumers a genuine choice of services and the full benefits of innovation,” European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in a statement. The action came after a seven-year long investigation prompted by scores of complaints from rivals such as U.S. consumer review website Yelp (YELP.N), TripAdvisor (TRIP.O), UK price comparison site Foundem, News Corp (NWSA.O) and lobbying group FairSearch. This is the biggest fine for a single company in an EU antitrust case, exceeding a 1.06-billion-euro sanction handed down to U.S. chipmaker Intel (INTC.O) in 2009.

It is also the biggest regulatory setback for Google, which settled with U.S. enforcers in 2013 with a requirement to stop “scraping” reviews and other data from rival websites for its own products.

The EU competition enforcer has also charged Google with using its Android mobile operating system to crush rivals, a case that could potentially be the most damaging for the company, with the system used in most smartphones. The company has also been accused of blocking rivals in online search advertising, with the Commission warning of deterrent fines if Google is found guilty of breaching EU rules.

Story of Music & Dance Celebrating the Celtic Nations

Celtic Journey Story of music and dance that celebrates the Celtic Nations

Inspirational educational & emotional, an international show of music dance & story

‘Celtic Journey’ is a stage show featuring music, dance and story that celebrates the Celtic nations, their traditions, and the international ties that unite them as one in a world of hardship, hope and new beginnings. Starring the vibrant Welsh Folk-Crossover group The Meadows (aged 13 to 23) and US Celtic singing star Kristyn Murphy, audiences will become lost in 2 hours of toe-tapping reels, heart wrenching ballads and stories of home.

On either side of the Atlantic Ocean there are several pockets of people who share a pride and love of their Celtic heritage. Through music, dance and story, cultures are shared, preserved and celebrated. The coming together of these two musical acts is a perfect combination and wonderful reminder of how far spread the cultures of the Celtic Nations have travelled and how deeply the roots of tradition are planted.

“We have been in contact with Kristyn for a few years and were really excited when she mentioned the possibility of touring the UK. Working together seems to have happened naturally. Kristyn is amazing, as her voice is so unique and beautiful. We’re having a lot of fun choosing new songs which work for everyone. It’s really interesting to see the programme develop with everyone’s input, especially as Kristyn is bringing in some historical and cultural elements from Maine and Canada. Celtic Journey has a real storytelling feel, combining the different elements of the Celtic world.”

It matters not from which side of The Atlantic, those with Celtic connections seem to be united through a never fading internal pride of homeland and lifestyle: Traditions are passed down unbroken for generations; stories are told over and over again, family legends never dying; there seems to exist an internal hope and joy that builds to a climax and cannot help but be celebrated.

That is the Celtic Journey

“Celtic Journey specifically focuses on the idea of ‘home’ and the ties that bind a people together regardless of place or distance between. It is meant to be a celebration of culture, as well as a way to highlight different cultures and the idea that each of these is unique. I feel as though I sometimes have a little trouble relating to my own country these days so it is a great time to really embrace my heritage and travel overseas to celebrate this. The Meadows are fantastically talented and I am very much looking forward to this journey.”

“Transfixingly beautiful!”– Adam Walton BBC Radio Walesperformances lively.

Kristyn Murphy was born and raised in the United States near the beautiful Maine coast where she began studying music and solo performing at the age of eight, and has since studied at the prestigious Hartt School and Crane School of Music. Kristyn’s voice, which is attracting audiences around the globe, has entertained high profile U.S. political figures, was recently featured in the national touring cabaret act Lovers & Monsters, and has been enthusiastically welcomed by audiences of all ages.

The singer’s deep connection to both the ocean and her Celtic heritage is reflected in her repertoire, which weaves together Celtic, American folk, Maritime and standards. Her musical versatility is pleasing to varied musical palates, and her energetic personality keeps

The Meadows a four-piece sibling multi-instrumentalist band are Melody [23], Fantasia [21], Harvey [18] and Titania [13] and they perform original songs and fresh interpretations of folk music, predominantly drawn from Celtic culture.

They have been Classically-trained under the tutelage of some of Britain’s finest musicians including Prof. Barry Haskey (retired leader of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales), Matthew Featherstone (BBC, principle flute), Christopher Williams (BBC & W.N.O., piano), Eva Stewart (BBC, principle piccolo), the world-renowned contemporary flute composer Prof. Ian Clarke (Guildhall). Their concerts are an ethereal journey; a fusion of atmospheric, contemplative, emotional textures combined with high-energy, exhilarating music which gets people dancing.

“There is no doubt that Kristyn Murphy is the real deal. This Lass is talented, intelligent, beautiful, and her music oozes with an emotion that leaves audiences spellbound.”

When Randy left for St. Louis, I moved to something till 1, I don’t remember what time it started. In the summer of 1966, they decided to stay on all night. I accepted that shift mainly because it gave me time off during the day and the evening, so I started midnight till 5:30 or 6 when George Erwin was supposed to come in. He rarely made it on time. They didn’t sell appliances, only repaired them. I tired of it pretty quickly and applied to WFAA. Charlie Van hired me and I started there doing weekends and production weekdays in March of 1967. Toby Keith Tour Returns To Nashville For First Headlining Concert In 13 Years

The July 20th date at the Ascend Amphitheater will go on sale on Wednesday, June 28th at 10:00am

Because filling venues nationwide in 2016 wasn’t enough, the Toby Keith Interstates & Tailgates Tour is back for a full course of music-fueled partying in 2017. Kicking off this year’s leg with sold out shows in Oklahoma and California, the singer-songwriter and entertainer announced today the addition of his return to Nashville for a headlining show after a 13-year absence. The July 20th date at the Ascend Amphitheater will go on sale on Wednesday, June 28th at 10:00am.

With 30 more dates on the itinerary that will continue through summer (and more to be added), the tour also heralds upcoming new music – Keith’s first since 2015’s critically acclaimed 35 MPH Town. Released on June 23rd, “Wacky Tobaccy,” written with longtime collaborator Scotty Emerick, is now available at all major digital music retailers and services. Out the same day is a music video for the song featuring guest appearances by Willie Nelson, Mac McAnally, and Emerick.

“Wacky Tobaccy is a slogan, a saying that’s been around forever and no one has ever written it in a song,” says Keith. “The song is written to the screws, and it fits in with what we do every night with the party crowd.”

As the tour started, Toby stayed in his native Oklahoma to attend to the important matter of his 14th Annual Toby Keith & Friends Golf Classic in Norman, Oklahoma that raised $1.6 million, a record breaking amount for a single event in the Toby Keith Foundation’s history.
