J. R. RUSS [WAVD FM (97.1 The Wave)] (Philadelphia-Boothwyn, PA) Subject: Elkins Institute. Hi Jim, Yes, I switched cable companies and will NEVER have an email like that again. I lost a lot of contacts and websites that had that Comcast address as a “forgot password” link were a nightmare. I went to Elkins in Chicago on Central at Addison, a few blocks from Wrigley Field. The First Phone got me a few jobs early on…three, I think. After that they were non-directional, FM or were big enough where they had an engineer until they relaxed the FCC rules. Now anybody BREATHING can sign a log. Good to hear from you again. BTW, did you ever work in Buffalo? I worked with a Jim Rose there. J.R. Russ ( / ( / ( / (

JACK PARNELL [ex PD/DJ WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Afternoon Jim: My Shirley was named for Shirley Temple. She’s very short and very petite. She and I dated for about 3 years in high school, and when we graduated, we waited about 2 months and married. I was already in radio when we married…on the local station in our hometown of Milan, TN. We moved to Jackson, TN after having been married about 5 months, where I worked at WDXI Radio & TV. Then Wink Martindale called and asked if I’d be interested in moving to WHBQ, which was the top Memphis station. We did move of course, and when Wink left for the great move to L.A., I did the morning show, later became Program Director. As you probably know, Wink and I are still very close friends and stay in close touch. So there we are…Shirley and I were married 60 years this past August, and have lived in Memphis 58 years this past June. JP

JASON WAYNE [ex KNOW-1490] (San Antonio, TX) A few months ago I was in Duluth, MN and in the rent car one evening listening to WOAI (1200) which came booming in more clear than local stations in Duluth !!!!! That was always a strange arrangement with WFAA/570 & 820 sharing situation. I recall a few names from that era at WFAA. Don Norman, which I have an aircheck of doing news at midnight on 570 around 1971. I also recall Charlie Van who was on KBOX (1480) then moved to 570. Arch Campbell in 1971 doing 9 to noon. Ken Benson, overnights. I also recall a very popular TV show on CH 8 on Sat. evenings called “Let me speak to the manager” hosted by head honcho Mike Shapiro. I was saddened to learn of the passing of Webb Hunt, but am not surprised. Perhaps I might be mistaken, but I think I recall a Mike Marshall on KFJZ (1270) around this same time? Possible the same person before coming to 570 or maybe after? My family were friends with Bob Gooding of CH 8 news and also Dale Milford who did weather b4 entering politics.

TRIVIA ANSWER: On March 2, 1922, WEAF-610 owned by AT&T Western Electric signs on as the first radio station in New York City. Some believe that the call letters stand for Western Electric AT&T Fone or Water, Earth, Air and Fire (the 4 classical elements). However, records suggest that the FCC assigns WEAF-610 call letters from an alphabetical sequence. WEAF-610 later becomes WNBC-660.

JUDGE JONATHAN HAYES [ex KWKH-1130, KEEL-710, WKY-930, KLIF-1190, KVIL FM, KLUV FM] (Waxahachie, TX) Your link was posted to my Facebook wall by a friend and fellow actor. He knew of my background and figured that I would like it and he was right. By the way of my 45 years in the business, 15 years were as a DJ and the last 30 as a traffic reporter.

MARGARET THATCHER (October 13, 1925 – April 8, 2013) Standing in the middle of the road is very dangerous; you get knocked down by the traffic from both sides.
