ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
MEXICO UNSAFE COUNTRY FOR JOURNALISTS Name a country that is more unsafe for a journalist than Afghanistan and Somalia and you get Mexico. That’s right. According to The New York Times, it is more unsafe to be a journalist in Mexico than Afghanistan or Somalia because more journalists are murdered in Mexico than those two war-torn countries. Since 2000, at least 104 journalists are murdered in Mexico while illegal aliens pour across our border like tarantulas.

HUGE BLAST STRIKES SOUTH FLORIDA RADIO This week Alpha Media’s ownership of WMEN-640 and WFTL-850 is official. Just over a month ago Jennifer Ross and Bill Adams join Gerrard Campbell on the morning show. Gerrard is super gracious: It’ll be good. I can concentrate on news, and Jenn & Bill bring their big names to 850 in a bigger capacity. But, on Thursday, April 29, 2017 Gerrard’s manager calls him into his office and says: his position does not make business sense. In radio, the wind shifts too fast.

J. R. RUSS [past Voice of America, WGRX FM, WBSB FM, WCLY FM, WAVA FM, WECK-1230] (Philadelphia-Boothwyn, PA) Subject: Elkins Institute. Hi Jim, Yes, I switched cable companies and will NEVER have an email like that again. I lost a lot of contacts and websites that had that Comcast address as a “forgot password” link were a nightmare. I went to Elkins in Chicago on Central at Addison, a few blocks from Wrigley Field. The First Phone got me a few jobs early on…three, I think. After that they were non-directional, FM or were big enough where they had an engineer until they relaxed the FCC rules. Now anybody BREATHING can sign a log. Good to hear from you again. BTW, did you ever work in Buffalo? I worked with a Jim Rose there. JR J.R. Russ (www.jrruss.com) / (www.commercial-voiceover.com) / (www.movieticketradio.com) / (www.WCFLchicago.com)

TRIVIA ANSWER: On April 25, 1949, an article in LOOK magazine predicts that radio is doomed and that within three years TV will overshadow radio completely. Rise and shine! Radio reinvents itself with Top 40 music & becomes bigger than ever, while LOOK magazine disappears in 1971. During the 1950s, LOOK magazine is our family’s favorite publication.
BILL CHERRY [Realtor, In late 1950s Music ’til Dawn host on WWL-870] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1611) April 28, 2017 [Friday]. Chuck’s (Dunaway) comment about the (coverall) jeans in the museum is a riot. VERY DJ-esque behavior. You’re the best!
DEVIN KELLY (January 29, 1986 – p) I grew up in the ’90s, so I’ve definitely resurrected many looks from my youth lately, including overalls, jelly shoes, and, of course, Doc Martens.
