JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ-Memphis DJ and PD] (Memphis, TN) We came to Memphis, I at WHBQ, in 1958. I was offered a job shortly before WHBQ, in Chattanooga, but turned it down. I do know where Pulaski, TN is; in the early 60s, Shirley had a brother who was assistant headmaster of a military academy on a mountain just southwest of Pulaski. We usually would drive from here to hwy 64, then take it to the Sewanee Military Academy, which also had a college there. Enjoyable trips. We’d go through some of the caves between there and Chattanooga. I’m sure Interstate 40 hadn’t been built yet…by the time I-40 was built, he and his family had moved to just below Nashville, and he had become headmaster of a military academy there. We also had friends later with whom I’d worked at WDXI in Jackson, TN. back in 1957 and early 58…George and Dot Wyatt…he looked like Rock Hudson and sang like Bing Crosby…really!. His wife was a Liz Taylor lookalike. At one time George became a big big name in country radio as “George Lewis Wyatt The Third”, on the bit country station in Birmingham. Shortly after that, they moved to Chattanooga and he worked in radio there for awhile, then bought a radio station in Pulaski. He died a couple of years ago where he had retired on a ranch he owned between Chattanooga and Knoxville. JP

JAY WEAVER [KLBK–1360 Lubbock, KPCN-730, KBUY–1540, Fort Worth] (DFW-Hurst, TX) Yes, Sir, Jim – My interview with him (Tex Ritter) may well have been in 1967. I really don’t know. Tried to see if I could find out then he was Grand Marshal of the Fort Worth Fat Stock Show and Rodeo, but research turned up nothing. By the way, Mike Marshall contributed a nice piece in the last newsletter mentioning when was at KULF – 790 in Houston doing an all night show. He mentioned his “all night newsman” Sam Putney. Well, Sam is now here in Dallas/Fort Worth doing news on WBAP (820) and KLIF (570). Still doing News and sounds good! Jay
TRIVIA ANSWER: On March 14, 1923 Pete Parker of CKCK-620 in Regina, Saskatchewan does world’s first play-by-play broadcast of a professional hockey game where Edmonton beats Regina 1-0.
MIKE MARSHALL [ex WFAA-570, KQUE FM] (Houston, TX) Subject: My name. Jim, I just have to comment on two of the messages you published in the March 17 JRRR. Jim Shannon commented on my post about KULF in the 70’s and spelled my name with one “l”. An official or law enforcement officer like a federal marshal or Marshal Dillon or a fire marshal is always spelled with one “l”. The name, like mine or Chief Justice John Marshall, is always spelled with two “l”s. Jay Weaver made a very common mistake, of which I am understandably sensitive, by saying that Tex Ritter was the Grand Marshall of the Fort Worth Rodeo parade. It happens all the time. I was recently sent some photos of my high school in Fort Worth’s homecoming parade with a big sign on one of the car doors that read, “Grand Marshall”. Mike (Two Ls) Marshall
MARK TWAIN (November 30, 1835 – April 21, 1910) Anyone who can only think of one way to spell a word obviously lacks imagination.
