NO MORE SCHOOL CLOSINGS IN PHILLY It is a sign of the times. We can blame the Internet, cell phones and robo calls for firing torpedoes at one of our childhood rituals – school closings. CBS Radio KYW-1060 Philadelphia, PA puts an end to an era of broadcasting school closing numbers on snowy days in the Philadelphia area for a half century. Steve Butler, director of KYW-1060 news and programming says: That time will be devoted to more information on traffic, airport conditions and reports from neighborhoods.

JACK PARNELL [ex PD/DJ WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Loss of another friend of many. Jim: Anybody remember the term: “Memphis Mafia”? They were about 7 of Elvis’ close friends, and each had their “jobs”…yes, Elvis did pay them well, and they almost lived with him at Graceland. Most had known him since Humes High School days in Memphis. They ranged from former sheriffs to actors (Red West), to Sunny West, to TV personalities (George Klein), former radio program directors (Marty Lacker) and others. Marty Lacker was the one who quit his radio career in order to form the Memphis Mafia. Marty was the organizer of the group, as well as a personal finance manager for Elvis. Later he became a vice president for American Studios in Memphis’ he had already produced a couple of hits while being manager of Pepper Sound Studios and Records. When at American, he got Elvis to “come back home” to Memphis and cut the “Elvis In Memphis” album. Marty even began the Memphis Music Association to help publicize Memphis Music everywhere…(the local media seldom promoted it at all). Sadly, Marty died this week, and went to his funeral was Thursday. He and I were close friends for those many years, a very down to earth guy, and was in Humes High at the same time Elvis was. Jack Parnell-former WHBQ morning man and program director.

JOANIE GREEN [KPRC TV CH 2, KZEW FM, KFWD FM, KNOK FM, KAUM FM, KILT FM, KNUZ-1230, Metro Traffic, Houston Taping for the Blind] (Tulsa, OK) Hi Jim, I don’t do radio or TV here because I was told by a prospective television employer that while I had a “fabulous” resume’ I was just too old. I took that as my cue… So, now I work as a receptionist for a non-profit as its downtown receptionist helping families in crisis with diapers, formula, food and clothing. We never know from day to day how many families we’ll see. It could be as few as 10 or our highest number, 77 families in one 3 and a half hour period. I was there that day and boy, was I bushed after we closed the doors. I’ve gotten used to the screaming, hungry kids and can generally ride herd over our wayward children that their mommies tend to ignore. I help edit their publications, build from scratch packets for the board members in recruiting/sales/money requests, etc. My normal hours are 9-2; but I get out anywhere from 2-5:15. I never know from day to day. I work until it is done or they are shutting the doors. Take care and talk with you soon. Joan
