FM RADIO LISTENERS IN A HEAP OF TROUBLE As we previously report, this week, Norway begins to replace analog FM radio with DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting) which is widespread in Europe as an FM replacement. Is the US next to ditch FM radio? The biggest advantage of FM and AM radio is that they are free to us listeners – but drat those doggone commercials. Most FM listeners appear to be in cars. If FM disappears, how will we replace it? Please share your thoughts with us at Rosekkkj@earthlink.net.

JACK PARNELL [ex PD/DJ WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Hello Jim: I never did go to any actual radio course…we had a school here in Memphis in which some of our guys taught. I believe it would have taken me longer to learn how to get rid of my southern accent if I had gone to take radio courses. Even before I even thought about getting into radio, I began carefully listening to the radio guys when I was around 6 years old. I would notice their lack of accent, and try and imitate them. I was heavily interested in radio and even public speaking, or especially learning how to speak clearly, etc. My parents and my siblings, who were much older than I, told me that I began actually talking CLEARLY at the age of 6 months. I even had people who knew me from infancy who told me they wondered what I was going to become, since I would from infancy speak very clearly.

JIM MCCURDY [ex KRBC-1470; KNIT-1280; KTLC-100.7; KRBC-TV CH 9 news anchor; KTAB-TV CH 24 news anchor] (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Subject: Hal Jay’s son Josh. Jim, Sad news that Hal Jay’s son Josh perished in the accident. My thoughts and prayers are with Hal and his family as they deal with this tragic loss. Jim McCurdy
DON SUNDEEN [DJ/Hi Records promotion/TV ad production] (Dallas, TX) Jim your piece on the shutting down of Ringling Bros Circus really stuck a chord. When I was about 12-13 they came to my town and Western New York, and I skipped school and went to where they were unloading the train. I was too small to participate in raising the tent, so I was assigned to unpack the ‘Freak Show.’ It was a wonderful experience and I learned that those ‘freaks’ were just people who had been born that way, and very sweet. I had a great time until I got home and found very unhappy parents who wondered where I was. your friend don (www.thedonrocks.com) / (https://www.facebook.com/ OfficialTheDonRocksPage) / Twitter: @TheRealDonRocks

BILL INGRAM [KSBJ FM] (Houston-Cleveland, TX) Subject: Bill Ingram celebrates 20 years at KSBJ Houston. Jim, I am celebrating my 20th year at 89.3 KSBJ in Houston this month (Jan 30, 2017). I realize, not many people in this crazy business reach that milestone at one station, so it’s something I am proud of accomplishing. I have worn many hats in the 20 years at KSBJ… Host of the Evening Show, Remote Technician, Afternoon Traffic Anchor, and for the past three years, Traffic Anchor for the Morning and the Afternoon Shows. My career started in 1975, working at a number of small market stations, and eventually moving to the majors, with a stint at KILT/Houston, and Metro Traffic/Road Watch America. I came to KSBJ in January of 1997. Thanks for all you do Jim, Bill Ingram

MIKE SHANNON [Navteq traffic WBAP-820/WFAA-TV] (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Subject: DFW Radio/TV Lunch Bunch coming Jan 28! It’s the first Lunch Bunch of 2017! Humperdink’s NW Dallas is the place, Saturday the 28th is the date, noon is the time. We’ll meet near the game room, which is just off the bar area…so go straight in, turn right into the bar area, then right again towards the game area. Same protocol…see old friends, meet new ones, do some networking, etc. No agendas, no politics, etc, as we keep it very casual and fun. Each person pays his/her own way. Tasty menu and reasonable prices! And feel free to wear some of your old radio threads just for fun. Lately, it’s been a fairly tame crowd of 20-30, with plenty of room to move around and chat with everyone. Again, Humperdink’s, 2208 W Northwest Hwy (between IH-35E and Loop 12/Walton Walker,) between noon and 3 on Saturday, Jan 28 (one week from today, that is.) Hope you can be there! Please email with any questions. Thanks! Mike Shannon (www.dfwRetroplex.com)
