TOWER OF POWER FALLS The 1970s produce some of our favorite tunes such as Tower of Power’s So Very Hard to Go (#17-1973) and You’re Still a Young Man (#29-1972). The Tower of Power horn section appears on several other artists’ recordings by Aerosmith, Elton John, Little Feat, The Monkees, Rod Stewart, Jefferson Starship and others. Two members of legendary R&B group Tower of Power are in the hospital after being struck by an Amtrak train last Thursday night, January 12, 2017 in their hometown Oakland, CA.
ADIOS SALLY FIELD The 5′ 3″ Sally Margaret Field is born on November 6, 1946 in Pasadena, CA. From 1965 – 1966 we enjoy Sally Field as Gidget. In 1994, she is in Forrest Gump. But we probably remember Sally Field best with Burt Reynolds in Smokey and the Bandit. Burt Reynolds reveals in Vanity Fair’s December issue that he is still enamored with ex-girlfriend Sally Field, calling her the love of his life. November 6, 2016 is Sally Field’s 70th birthday. After a 50 year acting career, Sally Field announces that she may retire.
LADY GAGA’S RULES FOR THE SUPER BOWL The NY Daily News reports a source tells Entertainment Tonight: Lady Gaga was told by the NFL that she cannot say anything or bring anything up about the election, or mention Donald Trump. An NFL rep tells Entertainment Tonight: that is nonsense from people trying to stir up controversy where there is none. Lady Gaga is focused on putting together an amazing show for fans and we love working with her on it; we aren’t going to be distracted by this. We’ll see.

GARY DELAUNE [KYTY-810, ex KLIF-1190, WFAA-570/820, CH 5 KENS TV] (San Antonio, TX) Jim: Sorry to say but after 10 years of doing a two hour radio show on KYTY (810) radio in San Antonio, the Bruce and Gary Program has been categorized into the archives of great memories. Bruce is still in rehab after six months and was also a morning co-host with Blanquita Cullum on the No Bull network that has 7 affiliates in South Texas. He selected great music from the golden days of rock ‘n roll and along with the late Ricci Ware was a giant of that era. We had a loyal audience and there was no other Saturday program that offered that format. Perhaps it will resume some day when Bruce regains his health and mobility. This fall, I will turn off the microphone after I complete my 58th season of broadcasting Texas high school football. It all began at WFAA in Dallas in 1960. It was great sharing the microphone with guys like Pierce Allman, Frank Glieber, Wes Wise and other legends. GD

JIM SPURLOCK [ex KXYZ-1320] (Houston, TX) Subject: Milton Metz. Sad to hear of the passing of Milton Metz of WHAS Louisville. He was the broadcast voice and personality I most wanted to emulate at the beginning of my career and, were I a half century younger, aspire to today. He was perfection. I was maybe okay…for a short time. Thank you Mr. Metz. RIP Jim Spurlock KXYZ Houston with music that’s “Gentle On Your Mind”
TRIVIA ANSWER: Florence Henderson, we known as Carol Brady in beloved 1970s sitcom The Brady Bunch, who passes away at 82 on Thursday, November 24, 2016, also makes history as the first female guest host on The Tonight Show in 1962 in the period when the show is host-less between Jack Paar’s exit and Johnny Carson’s start.
MIKE KELLAM [former KHFI FM/KHFI-970, NBC WMAQ-670] (Estes Park, CO) Subject: Hits that hit twice. Hi, Jim! Just read that Chubby Checker had #1 with “Twist” in two separate years. I think that Tommy Edwards had “All In The Game” in the Top 40 in two separate years, although I don’t remember which years, or what place on the charts. I think one of the years was 1958. Maybe your vast archives can shed some light on this! Hope all is well with you. Mike Kellam
JIM BELL [KUHF FM 88.7 Morning Edition anchor since 1997-retires 2010] (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Song hit #1 three times. Hey Jim…The Twist and White Christmas may have hit #1 two times, but another song has the distinction of being the only song to hit #1 three times over a span of 18 years. The song, “I Will Always Love You” was written and recorded in 1973 by Dolly Parton as her loving farewell to her long-time partner and mentor Porter Waggoner after she decided to go solo. That first recording reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and did it again in October 1982 when she recorded it for The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Ten years after that, Whitney Houston covered the song for the 1992 film The Bodyguard, and her single spent 14 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It has since become one of the best-selling singles of all time and it remains the best-selling single by a woman in music history. Jim Bell – Lufkin
