THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH SHUTS DOWN One of our number one attractions is to go to the circus. Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus is The Greatest Show on Earth. After 146 years, the curtain comas down on The Greatest Show on Earth. Ringling Brothers Circus owner tells The Associated Press that the show closes forever in May 2017. Company executives sigh: Declining attendance, high operating costs, changing public tastes plus battles with animal rights groups causes the circus curtain to come down.

JOANIE GREEN [KPRC TV CH 2, KZEW FM, KFWD FM, KNOK FM, KAUM FM, KILT FM, KNUZ-1230, Metro Traffic, Houston Taping for the Blind] (Tulsa, OK) Hi Jim, I did tons of free lance radio commercials, some of the clients include University of Texas Medical Branch, Rosewood Hospital, Bridal Extravaganza, Russell & Smith Toyota, Dr. John Gray, bunches more. I was a part of Houston’s Gridiron, the annual scholarship fundraiser they would do each year. I wrote and acted in it; one year, was its talent, writer, annnnnnd producer; and I was a part of that for 17 years singing, dancing and bein’ silly to raise scholarship money for journalism students. I have done that in Tulsa for the last 3 years…in fact, we’re gearing up for 2017’s performance. Yikes! Already! I’m an editor for The American Society of Dowsers’ quarterly international publication ~ in fact, just sent off my latest edits to them today. While in Houston, I was the writer and editor of my neighborhood’s monthly newsletter, “The Park Bench” which was distributed to each home. Take care and talk with you soon. Joan

JACK PARNELL [ex PD/DJ WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Afternoon Jim: My Shirley was named for Shirley Temple. She’s very short and very petite. She and i dated for about 3 years in high school, and when we graduated, we waited about 2 months and married. I was already in radio when we married…on the local station in our hometown of Milan, TN. We moved to Jackson, TN after having been married about 5 months, where I worked at WDXI Radio & TV. Then Wink Martindale called and asked if I’d be interested in moving to WHBQ, which was the top Memphis station. We did move of course, and when Wink left for the great move to L.A., I did the morning show, later became Program Director. As you probably know, Wink and I are still very close friends and stay in close touch. So there we are…Shirley and I were married 60 years this past August, and have lived in Memphis 58 years this past June. JP

TRIVIA ANSWER: On January 13, 1962 Chubby Checker’s The Twist lands at Number 1 again, over a year after it first reaches the top spot on the charts. The only other song ever to hit Number 1 in two separate years is Bing Crosby’s White Christmas. (https://youtu.be/NJ0cHsGBjDU)
CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) I still think it is interesting that Ralph Yarborough defeated Gordon McLendon in the Democratic Primary, and George Bush in the General Election. I was too young to Vote, but helped by monitoring certain stations for the campaign. I think a subscriber of yours may have worked at KLIF and had ideas about this and the Fairness Doctrine, which since has gone by the wayside. I hate the terms Liberal and Conservative when used for emotional appeal than dealing with the issues. I had an English Professor at SFA give this a definition about a Romantic and a Sentimentalist: A Romantic thinks about the next Kiss, A Sentimentalist the last Kiss. Now I think it is time to put on some Floyd Cramer. His music is Country but easily fits in Easy Listening, not sure if he is still around performing.
