FM RADIO IS DEAD IN NORWAY Bolshevism lands in Scandinavia as Norway becomes the first nation to switch off its FM radio network. In a risky and unpopular gambade to digital technology that other countries closely watch, Norway parliament gives the final go-ahead for the shutdown of the FM (Frequency Modulation) network, which Norway kicks off in the 1950s. The big cut-off begins in the northern city of Bodoe on January 11, 2017. What about the 2 million Norwegian cars that do not have Digital Audio receivers?

MIKE BRAUN [ex KWTX-1230/KWTX FM 1975-1979 Waco, TX] (Ft. Worth, TX) Subject: Buddy Bostick dies. Jim, Texas broadcast pioneer Mr. M.N. “Buddy” Bostick. passed away January 4 at the age of 98. For 50 years, Buddy was the guiding force behind several radio and TV stations, including KWTX-AM, FM and TV (Waco), KBTX-TV (Bryan/College Station), KXII-TV (Sherman/Denison), KNAL radio (Victoria) and KLFY-TV (Lafayette, Louisiana). In 1975, Buddy gave me — a young broadcasting novice — the opportunity of a lifetime to spin records and talk on the radio at KWTX-AM and FM. Buddy was honored with the Pioneer of the Year award by the Texas Association of Broadcasters in 1996. BUD BUSCHARDT [WFAA TV CH 8 Director, KVIL FM, WFAA-570, ABC sat radio DJ] (Dallas, TX) Jim, I did the first oldies show in DFW before Oldies Stations even existed. 57 Nostalgia Place aired on WFAA (AM) from 1973 until 1976 when 570 went from “Musicradio” to “Talk Radio”. There are clips and even complete shows on the internet. Check Google if you are curious. I was first to do “thematic” oldies shows..a stable for oldies DJ’s now. I show my college students clips from Art Vuolo’s “History of the American DJ”. (It is on YouTube). They cannot believe that radio was ever that much fun! Like you, I remember the good old days of radio and am sad they will never return. (Bring back analog, turntables, records, and carts!) Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Bud
TRIVIA ANSWER: On December 29, 1958 President Dwight D. Eisenhower makes first radio broadcast from space: To all mankind, America’s wish for Peace on Earth & Good Will to Men Everywhere.
CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) I find that in the day have been enjoying Country Music from KAND 1340 and KGVL 1400. I find the small market stations often more interesting. I wish the stations that moved in as Rim Shots would go back to the towns they were originally licensed to serve. I do have a minor problem another Amateur Radio Operator was pretending to be me. He was making fun of the fact that I mentioned I was dealing with loss of hearing and looking for a good set of headphones. Though why make fun of me, I am just a Tech, and do not have the knowledge of others, I am still learning so as to have a better operation. Now I am thinking of a song: WOLD. 73, Charles, KC5RAI
DICK VAN DYKE (December 13, 1925 – p) So at 16 I got a job at the local radio station. I was working after school. And on the weekends I was there alone. I did everything. I played records, interviews, ran across the hall, got the news, ripped it off, read it and ran the whole station by myself. It was a great experience. I thought I eventually wanted to be a television announcer.
