BUD BUSCHARDT [WFAA TV CH 8 Director, KVIL FM, WFAA-570, ABC sat radio DJ] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Beatles First Air Play. Jim, After researching some local Houston & Dallas radio station surveys, I agree with your UCLA researcher. “I Want To Hold Your Hand” was not the first Beatles record to be played on radio in the U.S. KLIF Radio, Dallas: On April 20, 1963 “Please Please Me” (recorded in November, 1962) was the “KLIF King Klimber” and then was # 46 the next week. KNUZ Radio, Houston: During the week of April 12-18, 1963, “Please, Please Me” was #46 on the “KNUZ Sonic 60 Survey”. Best, Bud

JOANIE GREEN [KPRC TV CH 2, KZEW FM, KFWD FM, KNOK FM, KAUM FM, KILT FM, KNUZ-1230, Metro Traffic, Houston Taping for the Blind] (Tulsa, OK) Hi Jim, OMG!!! I just read the latest installment of JRRR and you wouldn’t believe it… Charlie Sykes is my ex-cousin-in-law… he wouldn’t know me from Adam, but his ex-wife, Milwaukee Judge Diane Schwerm Sykes, is my first cousin. Diane’s father and my father were brothers (past tense because my father has passed away). Diane is a terrific person and Charlie was often controversial in what he said and did on the air. Did it give any reason for his retirement? I hope you’re doing well these days… Merry Christmas…and Happy New Year! Joanie

JAY WEAVER [KCUL-1540/KBUY-1540/KPCN-730] (DFW-Hurst, TX) Subject: Christmas. Jim – Rhonda and I wish you a very Merry Christmas and the Happiest of New Years. I look forward to your “news letters” regularly. This Christmas is different. I had back surgery a week ago, both of my children are out of town for Christmas – my daughter in Edmonton Canada with her husband and my son and his family are skiing in Red River, New Mexico. On top of all that, my only sibling (sister) died this past week. I can’t go to the funeral because I can’t take the chance of being too close to someone who might bump into me and cause me to lose my balance. BUT, life is still good!!! Please take care, My Friend. Jay Weaver
TRIVIA ANSWER: From May 1934 until October 1935, Edwin H. Armstrong conducts the first large scale field tests of his FM radio technology from a laboratory constructed by RCA on the 85th floor of the Empire State Building. On December 18, 1937, Edwin H. Armstrong finances construction of the first FM radio station, W2XMN, a 40 kilowatt broadcaster in Alpine, NJ. The signal (at 42.8 MHz) is heard clearly 100 miles away, despite the use of less power than an AM radio station.
JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas/KJKK FM/Infinity KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Own Jay Walker Prod/Jay Walker Competitive Audio consultant 40 Plus Years In Radio] (Ft. Worth-Hurst, TX) Subject: AT&T – Time Warner merger. As long as telecoms remain basically unregulated and allowed to stifle competition, rates and performance will never improve. For profit companies do NOT and have NEVER worked for the best interests of the consumer, they are ONLY beholding to the stock holders. Instead of allowing telecom companies the ability to create monopolies we should turn them all into public owned CO-OPs where any profit is plowed back into the company for service improvements and rate reductions. I suggest CO-OPs as both my water and electric services are consumer owned and we pay the lowest rate and have the highest reliability of service over ANY of the large corporate entities.
ADAM DAVIDSON (August 13, 1964 – p) When you see a merger between two giants in a declining industry, it can look like the financial version of a couple having a baby to save a marriage.
