MICHAEL O’SHEA [KLIF-1190 Dallas, TX/WLW-700 Cincinnati, OH/KMPC-1540 Los Angeles, CA] (Santa Rosa, CA) Gordon McLendon was ultimately given credit for KLIF’s long heritage…but he had several amazing “captains” along the way…and none smarter and more strategically brilliant than Ken Dowe. I have had an amazing career (now in my 52nd year), but everything I learned about programming, radio promotion, great copy-writing and ways to strategically out-think the competition has come from my seven years with Ken Dowe. I literally “owe” my success to him. And I want to publicly say “thank you! Ken”. Sincerely, Michael O’Shea; President, Sonoma Media Group; Santa Rosa, CA

GARY DELAUNE [KYTY-810/KLIF-1190 Dallas, TX/KENS TV CH 5] (San Antonio, TX) Jim; Joe (Long) didn’t want me to leave KLIF (1190) but (Eddie) Barker offered me more money at KRLD-TV. Roy (Nichols) and I plus five others left the same day in 1965. Bill Morgan had announced in early ‘64 that I was replacing (Rick) Weaver as play-by-play announcer but after the primary that spring, Gordon (McLendon) had to promise Senator Jennings Randolph to hire Jay. Bill Mercer had been released by Barker so I convinced Joe to hire him for weekends. He did and Bill and Jay worked behind my back to get Mercer on the 1965 broadcast crew. I don’t know who they convinced because (Don) Keyes had written me a strong recommendation. When I left, Gordon wrote me a letter of apology. But overall, the best thing I ever did. Ain’t this business fun and fair. GD (www.garydnews.com)

DAN MCCURDY [formerly Charlie & Harrigan-KLIF-1190/KBOX-1480 Dallas, TX/WMEX Boston, MA] (Sherman, TX) Subject: My short quote…
Jim…Well, that’s why Baskin-Robbins has 32 flavors, bubba… I think Brit Hume is the absolute premier newscaster extant! His experience and low key style is without peer, his insight and off the cuff humor are sharply honed — and he is my GO TO news analyst, the first one I turn to and trust as I settle in for my first evening martini! He is a nostalgic but refreshing throwback to Cronkite, Huntley-Brinkley and Douglas Edwards. Hands down, Hume is my top talking head at the moment! Dan
TRIVIA ANSWER: On November 4 1967 WOR FM flips from Progressive Rock to Drake Top 40 format. The line-up is: Hal Mitchell, Sebastian Stone, Tony Taylor, Jim O’Brien.
CHARLES GEORGE [kc5rai – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Disco Ducting. Tonight have been hearing 93.5 The Cayote, Cooper. Have not heard the actual Call. Some songs sound more like Disco to me. Also getting K95.5 Continuous Country. Heard them mention Hugo, Oklahoma. Made me want to put on my Cowboy Boots and go out Dancing. I do not think AM stations having translators on FM is going to save AM. It will take talent and programming not found by other means. Though recruiting persons might be difficult. Also being an amateur I probably will not have the perspective of a person who has had a Lifetime in the Industry as a Professional. Like I once was asked by a professor, “Whether I thought I knew as much…” My reply was that I knew about using the Library, and on somethings might know more. He then gave back an assignment with remarks on what to work on more for the course. Some arguments you cannot win, and even doing so may not be worth the cost. I had a Pastor, Rev Leta Gorham give a sermon. She said there were three basic personalities: Risk Taker, Under Taker, Care Taker. Now to figure out who is in on 90.3 sounds like Brother Stair and Over comers Ministry. Also have noticed a weak station with Urban Contemporary/Adult Hits on 91.3, sounding like a KVIL clone, easily heard from KLIF 93.3. 73, Charles, KC5RAI
