MIKE SIMPSON [ex KLIF-1190, KRLD-1080/FM/TV, WFAA-AM, KDSX-Sherman/Denison, KIKN-Corpus Christi, KVET-Austin, KFJZ/Texas State Network, and KVIL FM 3 separate times] (Sacramento, CA)Subject: “My father and I are selling KLIF…” KLIF was my first job in radio. As a serious scanner-freak, somehow I managed to get the newsroom hotline. First I started by calling in news tips. Eventually, Frank Haley actually let me on the air, doing brief voicers for “KLIF 20-20 News.” That eventually led to McLendon’s National Program Director Bill Stewart asking News Director Brad Messer “who the hell is this Mike Simpson guy?!?!” Brad explained that I was some kid who never missed scooping KBOX on street news…if it happened I was all over it. Stewart told Brad to either hire me, or get me the OFF the air, I wasn’t covered by the station’s broadcast liability insurance! So I was paid $1.60/hour for a 6 to 10:00 pm Saturday night mobile news shift. How amazing of an experience it was to work with cream-of-the-crop news giants of the late 60’s like Frank, Brad, Dick Mock, B. William Johnson, Ron “McCallister” Jenkins, and someone who would turn out to be my lifelong best friend, then a very young Bob Morrision. Mike Simpson

MIKE KELLAM [ex KHFI FM/KHFI-970 & NBC WMAQ TV] (Estes Park, CO) Hi, Jim! Oops! I am not used to e-mailing via I-Pad. Yes, I do remember going to Austin for Thanksgiving in 1967 and stopping at WFAA (820-Dallas, TX) to see you in action. I remember that on the hour, I am not sure which hour, you relinquished the frequency to WBAP. I think that that switch is no longer done, but I do remember that visit. Now, I believe we get WBAP here in Colorado on 820 at night. Hope all is well. With you and Susie. Good hearing from you. Mike Kellam

JEFF MCCLAIN [KNUZ-1230, KENR-1070, KFMK FM, WNOE-1060] (Houston-Cleveland, TX) Jim, still read your column every week and enjoy the news except for the Obits. I am responding to Jim Shannon about his question about news person George Thomas. I heard he passed away many years ago. Bill Grant is GM of a station in WACO that is talk/spots. Other than that most of us who were playing the hits at KULF in the early 70’s have graduated to that big control room in the sky. As for me, I’m into year 2 with a LPFM in my hometown of Cleveland, Texas playin’ the hits from the 60’s – 80’s and having fun doing small town radio. I really didn’t know how much fun it was when I was coming up through the ranks. Too many stars in my eyes. Any of you guys that still have the desire to do it, find a small town LP somewhere that could use programming help and put those pipes to work. It’s still fun! Jeff McClain, Manager KORG 95.3 FM Cleveland’s Hometown Radio
TRIVIA ANSWER: Dick Clark’s Saturday Night musical variety show on ABC TV on Saturday nights from February 15, 1958 through September 10, 1960 where Dick Clark introduces musical guests who perform their latest popular hits are considered to be the first music videos.
CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI, ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Radio Daze. Yes, I can play Wildwood Flower on the Guitar, but play it better on my 5-string banjo, but do not usually talk about my banjo playing. My favorite banjo players on recordings: Gus Cannon, Pete Seeger, Earl Scruggs. My favorite being who ever I am hearing at the time. Though I learned it first as Sinking Of The Rueben James from a Chad Mitchell Trio recording. I later heard Woody Guthrie version. Charles George, KC5RAI
JIM STAFFORD (January 16, 1944-p) Smoking wildwood flower got to be a habit, we didn’t see no harm. We thought it was kind of handy to take a trip and never leave the farm.
