JIM SHANNON [former KULF-790, WIL-1430] (Ellisville-St. Louis, MO) Subject: Old Kulf 79 Staff. Jim, Been trying to track down some of the old KULF staff from the early ’70s that I worked with. Found out that Jim Tate, David Fowler, Hal McClain, Johnny Gilbert, Bob Knowlton, Ron Morgan, Royce Guinn. Jim Wilson and Gary Hoffman have all died. Am curious about Gary Hoffman. My source was not certain, but he thought he was at KQUE, Houston around 2012 when he became ill and died. Can anyone confirm this? Was wondering about Bill Grant and George Thomas. Anyone? Hal Eisner is in TV news in LA. Larry Don Johnson is at KTSU, Houston. Jeff Mack runs a LPFM in his hometown of Cleveland, TX. If anyone has info about these of any others working at KULF from ’70-’74, I would appreciate hearing from them. Thanks, Jim Shannon

KEN DOWE [ex CEO Service Broadcasting #1 KKDA FM (104.5) / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190 / GM KNUS FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: THE KNUS STORY- Continued. Jim, So, KLIF (1190) was purchased. PD, Michael O’Shea stayed with the buyers. KNUS was then created from dust. But, to assemble it, I was legally unable to poach from the staff of our former station, KLIF. Nonetheless, to our great fortune, we were able to build an entirely new team for KNUS. These guys (and ladies, who always had prominent roles in my stations) individually became MVPs, and in a year and a half KNUS…was the city’s new #1 radio station. On FM, yet. When most people hardly knew there was any such thing as an FM. The “kicker?” Bill Stewart came aboard to oversee KLIF. Then, he made …a rare error: Bill demoted Michael and gave the Program Director’s position to another on the staff. KNUS was off to the races. Had Michael remained in charge of KLIF’s programming instead of the replacement, KNUS may not have so quickly unseated KLIF. But, with my protégé Michael, MIA…game over. Michael, of course fell…upward. And began a most exceptional broadcast career. Elsewhere. And, now you know…”the rest of the story.” kd

CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI, ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Radio Daze. I enjoy WSM 650 at night. I heard a station one night on 1660, it had calls of a former Top-40 station, KXOL. Interesting where calls go at times. I like playing the guitar, but the Soprano Recorder is fun when I want to relax. I am trying to find a song but do not know it’s title has the words, Today is the day to ride away… At least I think those are the words. I first heard it on KAMC 94.9 when they had a Progressive Country Music. They beat another better known station to the format in the area. Wonder who remembers KAMC that reads your newsletter. Charles George, KC5RAI

CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: History will be made this November. Who says history isn’t interesting? Only in the USA. Regardless of who wins the presidential election this November, we will witness history being made. If Hillary Clinton wins the U.S. presidential election, it will be the first time in history that two U.S. presidents have slept with each other! If Donald Trump wins the U.S. presidential election, it will be the first time in history that a billionaire moves into public housing vacated by a black family. Is this a great country or what?
