MICHAEL O’SHEA [ex PD of KLIF-1190 Dallas, TX/WLW-700/KMPC-1540 Los Angeles, CA] (Santa Rosa, CA)Subject: KLIF and KNUS-FM. Hi Jim…Ken Dowe was my mentor. He “found” me doing nights in Toledo and brought this “yankee jock” to KLIF in ’67. He also promoted me to PD of KLIF in ’70 after our then pd (Charlie Van Dyke as I recall) left for CKLW and I wrote a six page, single spaced, type-written letter to Ken on “why” I should become the PD. I hand delivered it to his home while he was at church one Sunday after hearing rumors that Scotty Brink from WLS was being interviewed for the job…and candidly I was just scared for my job as an on-air jock there . Ken called me and said “you really want to be the PD of KLIF don’t you, Michael?” I lied and said “yes” . Sincerely, Michael O’Shea; President, Sonoma Media Group; Santa Rosa, CA

KEN DOWE [ex CEO Service Broadcasting #1 KKDA FM (104.5) / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190 / GM KNUS FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: THE KNUS STORY- Continued. Jim, Michel O’Shea was our Program Director at KLIF at the time of the sale. He was an outstanding radio personality and quite a fine programmer. And, he has remained one of my great friends since those long ago days when he would visit his wonderful mom in Dallas. He actually would spend much of his holiday at our Triangle Point KLIF Studios, watching the jocks and hanging out with me. It was to KLIF’s and my personal benefit that I later had the pleasure of bringing him aboard at KLIF/1190. First as a personality, and then as Program Director. I didn’t give him that title, he earned it. kd

DAN MCCURDY [formerly Charlie & Harrigan-KLIF-1190/KBOX-1480 Dallas, TX/WMEX Boston, MA] (Sherman, TX) Subject: O’Reilly Out? Jim…RE: speculation that O’Reilly won’t renew with FOX News…So what if his replacement is already there? Bill O’Reilly has been the Bigfoot of Cable Broadcast for 15 years. Nobody close. Uh, oh! What do we see? Just behind that ratings tree? WHA? Why it’s Brit Hume! Snatched from the out-pastured herd to ‘fill in’ for suddenly gone Greta Van Susteren, Hume has assumed an early stride not seen since his halcyon days with ABC in the ’80s and ’90s. Well earned credibility intact, polished dour delivery still there, and vastly resource rich, Hume has traded his comfy Doc Martens for Nike Air Max speedsters and is setting a blistering first heat pace in the Top Dawg News-hound race. Dan McCurdy, KLIF, KBOX – Dallas; WMEX – Boston; KLBK – Lubbock; KRBC – Abilene; 2004 Texas Radio Hall of Fame Inductee

CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI, ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Mike Wade. I noticed that Mike Wade had a Birthday today. I think others who read your newsletter know him. I met him when attending Ridgewood Park Methodist Church. I think Radio will be around as long as there is a need. Though it will change as neighborhoods change. Like I use to like Landry’s Seafood at the West End but it is now closed. I think the home office is in Houston, also remember seeing a Landry’s at Galveston. Galveston, oh Galveston, I still hear the sea wind blowing… 73 KC5RAI, Charles P. S. I now have a Yaesu VX8-CDR, a handheld for when out roaming. It receives more frequencies that it can transmit on.
