TRIBUNE TOWER HAS NEW OWNER Los Angeles-based developer CIM Group buys the Tribune Tower, but WGN-720 management assures its staff that its operations continue there through the current lease that expires in June 2018. WGN-720 officials say when the time is right they will extend their lease in the historic downtown building. Currently, WGN-720 operates in the street-level Allstate Showcase Studio that overlooks Michigan Avenue. But, new owners will lease that street-level space to retailers.
TRIBUNE TRONCS FEDER The company formerly known as Tribune Publishing shortens its title to Tronc. Since 1980, Robert Feder reports on the Windy City media beat. Robert says: I’ve been troncked. Feder’s contract terminates at the end of August 2016. Robert sighs: I came to know a lot of great people there and I wish them well. But this is not the end for me. It’s only the beginning of a new chapter. I will continue to report on the Chicago media beat. (www.RobertFeder.com/)

JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ-560 PD/DJ] (Memphis, TN) Subject: “Cousin Tuny’s” passing. By now you’ve may have heard about the passing of Doris Freeman, the great lady over in Jackson, TN. who began her career in radio, then switched to tv, spent at least 40 years hosting a children’s show on WDXI tv, as well as hosting other tv shows. She was always known as “Cousin Tuny”, and was adored by children and their parents as well. She was inducted into The Tennessee Hall Radio Hall of Fame in 2014. I worked with her way back in 1957 and early 1958 at the Dixie Broadcasting Network stations; WDXI Radio 1310 and WDXI TV in Jackson. She’s sadly missed by people all over West Tennessee. Jack Parnell-former morning man at WHBQ Radio 56 in Memphis.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger-East Coast radio icon] (San Angelo-Abilene, TX) Subject: Patsy Cline would be 84 today! The DJ friend who let her sing on his radio show, her very first appearance, Jim McCoy, then WINC, Winchester, VA, died ystdy at 87. He was my friend for many years; we were at DJ Convs together in Nashville, & he was pallbearer at Patsy’s funeral, which I attended. We’ve been in contact all these yrs via mail & e-mails. He & Bertha owned ‘Troubador Club’ at their home in Berkeley Spgs, WVA, just north of Winchester. Sad day. BOB.

DAN MCCURDY [formerly Charlie & Harrigan-KLIF-1190/KBOX-1480 Dallas, TX/WMEX Boston, MA] (Sherman, TX) Subject: O’Reilly Out? Jim…(Brit) Hume is credible in a field that’s generally not, his cut-through-the-fat reporting and no nonsense aura are turning heads in broadcast circles, with news junkies and (we suspect) nicely stunned FOX holes at 48th and Sixth Avenue. I’ve now been hooked BIG TIME and claim ‘On the Record with Brit Hume’ as my first pre-martini news spot. And after his first week, Hume does not disappoint. He’s ready, he’s steady and he’s a comforting throwback to trusted evenings with Cronkite, Brinkley and Jennings. Nielsen! Make room for Hume! Dan McCurdy, KLIF, KBOX – Dallas; WMEX – Boston; KLBK – Lubbock; KRBC – Abilene; 2004 Texas Radio Hall of Fame Inductee
TRIVIA ANSWER: The 9-11 terrorist attack at the World Trade Center does not use the Emergency Alert System (EAS). Officials believe the massive media coverage makes it unnecessary. 9-11 gives a crash course on what radio is all about and why it is necessary. On 9/11, the WHTZ FM Z100 Morning Show drops its regular format to support WTC rescue teams. TV coverage of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, plus its aftermath is the longest uninterrupted news event in the history of U.S. television.
MIKE SHANNON [ex WBAP-820/WFAA-TV] (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) It’s the third quarterly Lunch Bunch of 2016! Come and welcome in the cooler fall weather (hopefully, anyway) with an afternoon of fresh food and not-so-fresh friends! We’ll meet again at Humperdink’s on NW Hwy and 35E-Stemmons in NW Dallas at high noon Saturday, Sept 17. *NOTE* We will meet in the ‘game room’ instead of the ‘atrium’ this time around. It’s on the south side of the bar. Same protocol as usual…pay your own way, come and go / drop in and drop out as you please (we’ll usually hang out until 3pm or later.) If you think about it, wear something radio or TV-related…it’s always fun to see those old logos and station t-shirts, etc! And I’m asking the group to make this a no-politics zone this time around so everyone will have a good time and leave happy. Thank you! Hope to see you all there! Mike Shannon (www.dfwRetroplex.com)
