In the middle of the biggest scandal in media history, rumors suggest that Megyn may leave Fox News after her contract expires in July 2017. O’Reilly also has one year to go on his contract. Kelly is the future of the network’s primetime lineup. Fox News may not want to compete against O’Reilly and a new Conservative news network.

DUANE ALLEN [Oak Ridge Boys lead singer] (Nashville-Hendersonville, TN) Happy Labor Day to you, too, Jim and Suzie. I just got my silver male Lab (Halsey, after Jim Halsey), and my charcoal female Lab (Blue Bell, after my favorite Texas ice cream), out of school. They have been in intense training for one month. Now, they are training me. Maybe soon, I will be house broke…HaHa

BILL HILL [ex KRBE FM Sales Manager] (Kemah, TX) Howdy! I turn 84his week. I am recuperating from a heart attack and optimistic. When I left the business last year, I had completed 65 years in radio and television. (45 years in Texas). It’s difficult to see the difficulties radio is facing these days, many of them self-inflicted. Voice tracking keeps ending careers, home office generated playlists mean a lot of stations don’t relate to their markets, local news has become a rare commodity, and if there’s a way to squeeze more from shrinking staffs, it’s done. Despite all this, there are some who have adapted and are highly successful. They are today’s real radio stars! There are those who have been able to syndicate and do well, and there is a lot of quality work coming out of home based studios. You have to admire these folks! The content and talent quality is also surprising on some internet endeavors. Hats off to these innovators! Just sayin’! Sent from my iPhone

GARY DELAUNE [KYTY-810 -ex KLIF-1190/KRLD TV CH 4/KENS TV CH 5] (San Antonio, TX) Subject: KLIF (1190) NEWS. Reading the emails of former Kliffonians, reminds me of a couple of personal experiences. Even though we had the “jet stream” news as Gordon once called it, we covered Dallas like a blanket over Junior Sample. One slow Sunday afternoon, mobile news reporter Kevin March, aka Ted Brown, was bored with no news taking place so when he heard a police dispatcher report to units to check out a body at the La Cabana hotel on Stemmons Freeway. Like most of the news staff, our rapport with cops paved the way to accompany officers on the scene. Ted did and when they arrived at the hotel room, the body was in the bathroom blocking the door. He helped push the D.O.A. to enter and they discovered the man was John Wayne’s buddy and great character actor Ward Bond. KLIF always seemed to “break” the big news first Gary DeLaune (www.garydnews.com)
TRIVIA ANSWER: On September 4th 1959, due to two recently stabbings in NYC, WCBS-880 bans all versions of Bobby Darin’s medieval murder ballad Mack the Knife.
KEN DOWE [ex CEO Service Broadcasting #1 KKDA FM (104.5) / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190 / GM KNUS FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: THE KNUS STORY- Continued. Jim, I read Michael’s (O’Shea) comments today in JRRR regarding the sale of Gordon McLendon’s KLIF in 1970, and its subsequent demise from the sudden success of the leftover from that sale (then almost dormant) KNUS-FM. As your readers are aware, Dan McCurdy had written you quite an original tale about KNUS-KLIF/1190 (Dallas-Ft. Worth) that had no basis in fact. You printed my response of the actual events as I observed them during the 1972 sale which occurred over a period of several weeks. And, Dan (gentleman that he is) offered his apology for reporting, what he had assumed, was a truthful accounting. kd
JONAS HACKETT (March 22, 1822 – December 12, 1870) Just ’cause it’s a tall tale don’t mean it ain’t true.
