MICHAEL O’SHEA [ex KLIF-1190 Dallas, TX/WLW-700/KMPC-1540 Los Angeles, CA] (Santa Rosa, CA)Subject: KLIF and KNUS-FM. Hi Jim…I was reading back issues of JRRR and having fun seeing the back and forth of the KLIF-KNUS-FM saga from the early 70’s. Ken Dowe’s recollection is spot-on (of course) as he was “on the spot” at the time. Gordon McLendon was a quiet, non-assuming individual, a true genius and a great businessman, but gentle in his own confidence and demeanor. I had a front-row-seat during this period as I was the current PD of KLIF (1190) when GBM sold the station. I recall the “big announcement” in the KLIF movie theatre on Commerce Street that Mike mentioned. Ken Dowe was my mentor. He “found” me doing nights in Toledo and brought this “yankee jock” to KLIF in ’67. He also promoted me to PD of KLIF in ’70 after our then pd (Charlie Van Dyke as I recall) left for CKLW and I wrote a six page, single spaced, type-written letter to Ken on “why” I should become the PD. I hand delivered it to his home while he was at church one Sunday after hearing rumors that Scotty Brink from WLS was being interviewed for the job…and candidly I was just scared for my job as an on-air jock there . Ken called me and said “you really want to be the PD of KLIF don’t you, Michael?” I lied and said “yes” . Sincerely, Michael O’Shea; President, Sonoma Media Group; Santa Rosa, CA

KEN DOWE [CEO Service Broadcasting #1 KKDA FM (104.5) / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX) The next day I presented Gordon with a 1.5 page plan of attack for KNUS. He gave me an immediate “go” with a kind admonishment: “Try not to make it too similar to KLIF, Ken. That wouldn’t be Kosher!” (Sly smile.) That is “..what he did.” There was no “..triumph by an evil genius.” I again hired Michael Spears, who had done great work for me in Dallas and Buffalo, to quarterback the new format. We brought aboard the perfect guys to execute it. Sixteen months later DFW had a new #1 radio station, the market’s first viable FM, and one of the 3 or 4 FMs in the vanguard of America’s sudden change-over in radio from AM to FM. Sadly, for them, our success came at the expense of KLIF/1190, which never recovered from its abyss. KNUS, rejected for $150,000, is today’s highly successful KLUV. Before the plunge of radio values, KLUV’s worth was in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

BOB GRANT [Robert Hanger-East Coast radio icon] (San Angelo-Abilene, TX) Subject: Another AM Bites The Dust. Too bad to see so many well operated AM’s dying. WSTP was one of those. Story follows from The Salisbury Post. (www.salisburypost.com/2016/09/03/wstp-gone-but-never-forgotten/) 1490 on your dial: WSTP is gone, but never forgotten – Salisbury Post (www.salisburypost.com) Salisbury’s one remaining radio station is known as Memories 1280. But this week the memories belong to WSTP 1490, which went off the air at midnight Tuesday. It’s hard to believe this venerable AM station is gone. CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Radio, Sports, Music and More. Often persons are on the Sidelines in Radio, Music, Sports for various reasons. Sometimes because of age, family, health, rules and regulations. Being on the Sidelines neither adds or diminishes their accomplishments. Like I was too young to go to a TV show hosted by Ron Chapman when he was at North Park. Also in junior high .you favorite station was KMAP with block programming. Also I liked KFAD better the KNUS in high school.
