IS VIACOM’S BILLION $ BRIDGE ABOUT TO FALL? In the 1990s, during my time as a DJ on KILT FM Houston, TX a lot transpires. In late 1995, Westinghouse (Group W) buys CBS. In 2000, CBS Corporation merges into Viacom. In 2005, Viacom changes its name to CBS Corporation. As Viacom prepares for the departure of CEO Philippe Dauman, his interim replacement, Thomas Dooley, plans to reach out to investors and set a new tone for a company that keeps communications minimal.
NATIONAL RADIO DAY PASSES WITHOUT INCIDENT On August 20, 2016 National Radio Day toasts the birth of broadcasting. In the early 1800s, David Edward Hughes, Heinrich Rudolf Hertz and Nikola Tesla are wireless telegraphy pioneers. But, in 1895 Guglielmo Marconi builds the first crude radio and broadcasts the very first transatlantic signal in 1901. National Radio Hall of Fame DJ host of Elvis Duran and the Morning Show, Elvis Duran, brags: Traditional radio is not going to die, it’s going to evolve.

MIKE SIMPSON [ex KLIF, KRLD-AM/FM/TV, WFAA-AM, KDSX-Sherman/Denison, KIKN-Corpus Christi, KVET-Austin, KFJZ/Texas State Network, and KVIL-FM 3 separate times] (Sacramento, CA) Subject: “My father and I are selling KLIF…” On the other side of the glass sat iconic radio legends like Ken (and Granny!), Michael O’Shea, Dave Ambrose, Charlie Van Dyke, Hal Martin (Michael Spears), and Cousin Lenny (I think I actually named those in air shift order!) While I doubt any of them would even remember that fat kid from Bryan Adams with his nose pressed up against the glass, being able to rub elbows and exchange an occasional hello in the break room, or at Chez Sam’s (the BBQ place across Jackson St.), the fact of being in their presence planted the seeds that led me down a semi-respectable radio career lasting off and on through the early 80’s Mike Simpson

LIZ PATRANELLA [Liz Houston – KTSA-550, KBAT-680] (Austin, TX) Subject: Joe Nasty Passes. I am sorry to report that we lost another great S.A. radio broadcaster when Joe Nasty (Dennis Alvord) passed away in his sleep at his home in Jourdanton, Texas, last week. Joe worked at KITY and KTFM in the late 70s and was a member of the SoSARB group. According to my records, his last meeting with us was in the fall of 2013. Trey Ware reports that there are no services planned. If anyone has any additional information, let me know. Liz

Hi Jim: Charles George mention in his last note to you that he enjoyed Jim Thomas on KFJZ (1270) in Fort Worth some years back and wondered if he was still around. Well, he is! He’s a great guy and I see him occasionally. He lost his wife, with whom he worked “on air” with, you may remember Sweet Loretta. He is currently on the internet keeping the music of the 70’s alive hosting and streaming the 70’s Preservation Society at www.70ps.com/radioshow/stream/

Hi Jim, I read your report every time it comes out and this week was shocked to see my name mentioned in an email from Charles George in Dallas. Said he listened to me in the 70’s at KFJZ. He made mention of “if I was still around”. I’m still hangin’ in…on the internet. I worked at KDSX-Denison as News Director, KRRV-Sherman, Morning Show WFAA-570, KFJZ-1270, KAAM-1310 all oldies, KMXR- Corpus Christi, and back to Dallas with 70’s Saturday Night in the 90’s on Mix1029 – Dallas and B97.9-Dallas. I finally retired and have been on the internet since then. It’s a part of my life and have to continue playing radio till I’m gone. Check out my stream at the 70’s Preservation Society, http://www.70ps.com. I still do a live show with my son J.J. every Friday night from 8pm till 10pm. Thanks again for all you provide in your newsletter Jim, it’s a great read twice a week… Jim Thomas — Keeper of the faith
