THE RAIN FALLS FOR FOLK SINGER In April 1965 my first radio assignment as a DJ is on KASO-1240 Minden, LA. Once a week I write and record a 30 second ad for the Joy Drive In theater. One of the first movies that I see is Baby the Rain Must Fall starring Steve McQueen and Lee Remick. Former Limelighter Glenn Yarbrough sings the title tune. For many years Glenn tours as a solo act and records a string of hits. On Thursday, August 11, 2016 Glenn Yarbrough passes away at 86 in his daughter’s home in Nashville, TN.

JIM MCCURDY [ex KORQ FM DJ, KTAB-TV news anchor] (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) In 1988, I added a early morning radio team to my work schedule and worked with two other guys and our show was called the Morning Team on KORQ FM initially, then we moved over to another station KTLC with the same show. We had a 50 share with Nielson and ARB and really had a lot of fun. We copied a lot of the stuff that my brother Dan and Ron Chapman did with the Charlie and Harrigan Show on KLIF (1190) back in the day. I even used some of their same sound effects and brother dan was helpful in us coming up with various funny bits. The show was really fun, but after 3 years of that, I found myself working close to 80 hours a week, so I trimmed down some of the extra curricular stuff like the radio show.

DAN MCCURDY [formerly Charlie & Harrigan-KLIF-1190/KBOX-1480 Dallas, TX/WMEX Boston, MA] (Sherman, TX) Subject: Ken Dowe’s letter… Hey Jim…Ken Dowe writes << Dan’s a fine friend of many years. However, as decades pass “war stories” are often embellished until too often they become truly tall tales. >> Well, Kenny, as usual, is right on the money! My ‘recollection’ was exactly that — a ‘collection’ of ‘recall’ enhanced by my writer’s interest in good drama. Kenny is certainly the source for accuracy, I am the spinner of what seemed obvious, and for that, I offer my sincere apology for reconfiguring the actual puzzle-pieces to match my imagined scenario. The ‘Gordon got ’em good’ idea just made so much sense to me that I unfairly offered it as fact instead of the assumption that it was. Again, my apologies to Kenny, Bart and any others who took issue with my note…you certainly had a right to. As my lifelong word-hero Mark Twain once said, “First, get your facts straight. Then distort them at your leisure.” The primary problem with my contribution was that my facts were not straight! Now, back to more fun with my writer’s challenge to distort with good judgment! – Dan McCurdy, Sherman, TX

KEN DOWE [CEO Service Broadcasting #1 KKDA FM (104.5) / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Dan’s article in today’s issue. Jim, KLIF’s FM was KNUS, a low-powered FM Gordon had hoped to rid himself of in tandem with Big KLIF. In our meeting, after the KLIF sale was consummated, Gordon said he had no interest in keeping KNUS and the buyer was welcome to it for $150,000. The Fairchild people left and privately conferred for 5 minutes or so, and returned with negative interest. Gordon and I departed with a signed contract for KLIF, taking a slow walk back to the McLendon Executive Offices. He neither chuckled darkly, slithered, nor proceeded to make the “Fairchild patsies squirm like grubs in an iron skillet.” What he did was to turn and say to me: “Well. I haven’t a clue what to do. You have any ideas, Ken. Looks as if we have a non-performing tiny FM. What do you think we can do with it?” I asked for 24 hours to think about it.
TRIVIA ANSWER: On April 7, 1967 Tom Donahue is the first DJ to play deep cuts from albums rather than singles on KMPX FM San Francisco, CA that revolutionizes Rock radio.
CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: KNUS. I still remember hearing KNUS and they simulcast KLIF then at 10 am went to what sounded like a Jukebox playing songs like: Catalina Island, Houston, etc. Not sure how long this lasted. In the eighties came on with the old 7.5 KW transmitter. The site also had a backup to KKDA-FM and other stations. I got to see them all as a guest. I still remember KLIF having towers off of Scene, they were there when I went to Hood and Samuell. To me any place I could walk easily was my neighborhood. Saw that and a tower was of a station on Lawnview near Forney, 104 both dials.
