RON YOUNG [voice overs / News – KOSA TV CBS CH7] (San Antonio, TX) Subject: 93 KHJ. Bob Hamilton said it best: Are you ready for the 80’s? Here the new mobile studio, formally from KFRC (610), invades the lot at 5515 Melrose. The KHJ (930) crew in the pix. Great on air talent. Superb memories and great people make good radio, throw in a manager who knows how to leave programming alone to win! Be Blessed! DAN MCCURDY [KLIF-1190/KBOX-1480 Dallas, TX/WMEX-1510 Boston, MA] (Sherman, TX) Gordon (McLendon) was a stinker, and always got the last laugh in any deal he made. Gordon had no intention of selling KROW (FM) its calls back then. He relished the idea of selling KLIF-AM to some sucker for a princely sum and then taking the FM across town and beating their brains out! Which is exactly what he did! His evil genius triumphed when Fairchild bowed to his stratospheric asking price and then he chuckled darkly, slithered across Commerce, set up shop and proceeded to make the Fairchild patsies squirm like grubs in an iron skillet. He was the best there ever was. But somehow proving it for all to see was never quite good enough. Muahahaha… Dan McCurdy Sherman, Texas (KLIF, KBOX, Dallas; WMEX, Boston; KRBC, Abilene; KLBK, Lubbock; 2004 inductee, Texas Radio Hall of Fame.)

JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas/KJKK FM/Infinity KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Own Jay Walker Prod/Jay Walker Competitive Audio consultant 40 Plus Years In Radio] (Dallas-McKinney, TX) Jim It seems anytime a new means of program distribution (fancy speak for broadcasting) comes along it doesn’t take much time before the ‘Big Guys’ figure out a way to take it away from ‘the people’. Case in point, the internet. Beginning back in the days of Shoutcast, Winamp V1.0 and the first semi-broadband connections I launched three ‘stations’ on what was known as ‘Live 365’ a audio streaming host which allowed more than the two or three connections a typical home service would accommodate. My services, Classic Country Cafe, Real Rock Radio, and ‘When AM Radio Rocked’ had a few faithful listeners. I never once charged any fee, sold any advertising, or made a dime from any of them. I did it for the joy of broadcasting. Then along comes the RIAA with their draconian royalty fees. Fees which were much HIGHER percentage wise than New York broadcast stations were charged. If you didn’t pay, you would be served a lawsuit, which would basically extort thousands of dollars just because a hobbyist wanted to play music. As a result ALL of the services once hosted on Live 365 are gone. Same happened with LPFM, it was set up for community broadcasters, and ended up in the hands of ‘religious’ broadcasters or as translators for failing AM stations… My best to you as always. Jay Walker
TRIVIA ANSWER: On August 7, 1981 the FCC stops issuing First and Second Class Operator licenses. FCC replaces them with a General Radiotelephone Operator License.
CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) I am still getting use to this phone. I thought my style of writing was like many others. But considering the 8th, I turn 63…. I have been told that I have not changed much. Like I find some musicians will talk to me, until I ask questions specific to an instrument. And I do not care about what they do off the microphone and stage. Also when a woman says I remind her of a brother or her father, not sure if it’s a compliment. I notice KLUV 98.7 is starting to sound more like an AOR than more of a CHR/Oldies station. Charles, KC5RAI
