KEN DOWE [CEO #1 KKDA FM / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX/Santa Fe, NM) Jim, Bill (Ham) was reared in Waxahachie with our friend John Borders. They went to school together until Johnny left for Baylor on a basketball scholarship. Johnny and I were close from the time he was my boss at KLIF in 1964 Dallas. Since then we had been regular luncheon buddies and fellow commiserators on business and politics, during and after the years we each owned radio stations. I knew all his Waxahachie family, and all the friend-ties, and inter-connecting relationships. Like Bill and John’s 79 year friendship. Their entire lives. Last Christmas Dottie and I received our usual gift of a box of cracked pecans from Bill at his “Lone Wolf” ranch near Austin. In early April I sadly attended Johnny’s funeral in Dallas after he died suddenly of pancreatic cancer. Bill was there. I sent Bill an email yesterday, but it had bounced back this morning. Chuck Dunaway emailed me the sad news. Now, it’s late in June. And, another too soon funeral. As friend Claude Hall says, “We come. We go.” Bill was such a wonderful fellow, and an unusually polite and respectful guy. Ken

CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: This was a tragic story. He (Bill Ham) never married again. Very sad. Keep your Glock locked and loaded~ I don’t know that Bill ever truly recovered. Cecile was the High School beauty queen in Waxahachie when Bill “was not cool enough or good enough” for her and her “Good ” family… (believe her dad was FBI) vs Bill’s modest background. Cecile married the “cool” guy, moved to NYC, and the marriage failed. By the time she returned…Ta Da! Bill was famous…and rich. ZZ TOP was his gold mine. He was deliriously overjoyed when Cecile agreed to become his wife. Bill loved buying her anything she wanted. He bought her the most expensive Cadillac available. She was ecstatic. Deciding to use it to run up to the supermarket, she finished shopping and ran back to her new car…where she was suddenly accosted…taken for a ride…and murdered. Chuck (www.chuckdunawaydj.com/)

JIM MCCURDY [ex KORQ FM DJ, KTAB-TV news anchor] (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) I wouldn’t take for the experience though! I had the Jimmy Mack Show through 1971, when I moved over to TV as main news anchor, which lasted both full and part-time for 29 years when I moved into other fields including financial and estate planning, oil and gas, healthcare and banking which bring me to today. 50 years later, I’ll be retiring at the end of this year and do some consulting after that. My wife, Tia, and I plan to do some traveling around this wonderful country of ours, and actually “rolling over instead of rolling out” in the morning. It’s been a GREAT ride my friend! Best, Jim

Several country stars took part in the 7th annual ACM Lifting Lives Music Camp, a week-long residential program open to campers nationwide with Williams Syndrome, which is a genetic condition present from birth that is characterized by medical problems, including vascular disease, developmental delays and learning disabilities.
Celebrities participating in the camp activities this year included Carrie Underwood, Maren Morris, Montgomery Gentry, Maddie & Tae, Eric Paslay, RaeLynn, Rascal Flatts and singer/songwriter/producer Ross Copperman.
“Just to see how much fun they’re having and how proud they are of themselves for creating a song—I don’t know, they’re just a ray of sunshine,” Carrie says of the campers. “It’s really amazing just to see them all come together and work together and write an adorable song.”
The campers were exposed to many sides of the music business, including a songwriting workshop with Eric Paslay and Ross Copperman; a meet and greet with Maddie & Tae at Nashville’s famed Wildhorse Saloon where campers shared stories and learned how to line dance; a Seacrest Studios visit with RaeLynn where campers could experience a day in the life of a radio DJ; dinner and karaoke with Montgomery Gentry; a studio day with Carrie Underwood and Ross Copperman; a performance by Maren Morris at the famous Bluebird Cafe; and a culminating performance by Rascal Flatts at the Grand Ole Opry.
“Eddie and I have been very fortunate over the years to be successful in what we love to do and have a passion for doing and when we find kinds that have the same passion for music, we love to get involved and help out,” says Troy Gentry. “We love sharing what we do with these kids that have a passion for what we do.”
“Just spending time with them—their energy is unlike anything I’ve ever seen,” adds RaeLynn. “They’re absolutely incredible. I just love being a part of this and giving back is one of my favorite things. I’m already happier today. It’s just an awesome event to be a part of.”
The camp is a partnership between ACM Lifting Lives and Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. For more information on the ACM Lifting Lives Music Camp visit their website here.
You can watch Carrie, Maren, RaeLynn and Montgomery Gentry share their day with the music campers below:

Even in a great relationship, you will have disagreements. That’s why you need to learn to fight fair. Paul addresses it this way: ‘…speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ…’ If you grew up in a home filled with tension and angry words, you may find yourself trying to avoid arguments at any cost. But silence doesn’t solve problems; it just allows them to become unspoken wedges between you.
What should you do? First, try to understand the difference between healthy and unhealthy conflict. In an unstable marriage, hostility is aimed at your spouse’s soft underbelly with comments like, ‘You never do anything right!’ and ‘Why did I marry you in the first place?’ and ‘You’re getting more like your mother every day!’ Such remarks strike at the very heart of your mate’s self-worth. Healthy conflict, by contrast, remains focused on the issues that cause disagreement. For example: ‘It upsets me when you don’t tell me you’re going to be late for dinner,’ or ‘I was embarrassed when you made me look foolish at the party last night.’Can you hear the difference? Even though the two approaches may be equally contentious, the first assaults the dignity of your spouse while the second addresses the source of conflict. When you learn to make this important distinction, you can work through your disagreements without wounding and insulting each other. Plus, when gaining the upper hand leaves your spouse feeling wounded and upset, you both lose. Remember: when someone feels loved and valued, they’re generally more open and receptive to what you have to say.
