DELILAH HATES PORTABLE PEOPLE METER Nielsen’s Portable People Meter strikes some as the Purple People Eater. Syndicated radio host the queen of FM Radio Delilah tosses stones at the PPM: The damage is horrendous…it’s destroying radio in general, and especially shows that don’t play for the meter. In February 2016, Delilah celebrates her 56th birthday plus 20 years in syndication. Listeners hear Delilah nightly on 171 radio stations in North America, usually from 7 pm to midnight.
FM RADIO MUST REINVENT ITSELF Paul Brenner’s commentary in the Indianapolis Business Journal (www.ibj.com) talks about how to innovate a century-old medium. FM broadcasting in the United States begins in the 1930s at engineer and inventor Edwin Howard Armstrong’s experimental station, W2XMN. Radio station consolidation in the 1990s and 2000s causes debt levels to outgrow current revenue potential. Emmis activates FM chips in smart phones to provide authentic radio listening via NextRadio.

CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: death. Bill Ham, longtime manager of ZZ Top, dies at 79 – Austin Music Source. Click the link for a good article about Bill Ham. (http://music.blog.austin360.com/2016/06/21/bill-ham-manager-of-zz-top-dies-at-79/) Do you still have the record? It was on DOT records. You are right, Bill was one of the nicest people on earth. Always a gentleman. I’ll miss him a lot. Every time I’d drop by for a visit…Bill would call a halt to his day, ask to have a hold on his calls and we’d go to the conference room to visit. Bill dedicated his life to ZZ top. I’m beginning to lose a lot of old and dear friends…Chuck

JIM MCCURDY [ex KORQ FM DJ, KTAB-TV news anchor] (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) I worked my way through college (McMurry University) in Abilene as an early morning drive time jock and also had the afternoon drive show on a day-timer KNIT-AM/FM. It is now KEAN-AM/FM. I rocked through a lot of tunes in those days with the British invasion, the late 60’s music including Hendrix, Neil Diamond, the 4-seasons and many more. When I’d get off the air and finish my production shift, I’d go to class (taking 18 hours a semester). Pretty grueling hours and work schedule, but persevered and got my degree in 4-years, Double BBA in Marketing and Economics. My wife at the time and I survived on $300 a month…paid for a duplex apt, a 67 Volkswagen bug, our new baby’s formula and college, which left us with a cool $20 to use for a month’s worth of groceries. Lots of peanut butter-jelly and bologna and cheese sandwiches . I was the skinniest I’ve ever been in my life during those ” lean” early years, but made up for the loss in weight in later years :o) It’s been a GREAT ride my friend! Best, Jim

JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas/KJKK FM/Infinity KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Own Jay Walker Prod/Jay Walker Competitive Audio consultant 40 Plus Years In Radio] (Dallas-McKinney, TX) Subject: On my soapbox. It’s a small world sir. I do a bit of engineering for KTER now KPYK over in Terrell. I worked with the owner Chuck Mohnkern for a number of years at 105.3 in Dallas. Chuck took over running the station after his father passed away. It’s a nice little station, plays big band music and has a nice local feel. Too bad they have to slug it out with XERF but that’s the way it goes…
