DAN HUGHES [GM WPCD FM Teaches radio broadcasting/broadcast history-Parkland College] (Champaign, IL) College Gives Up Radio Station – From Tom Taylor this morning: “Nebraska’s best alternative,” KFKX Hastings (90.1), is turning in its license next month. NBC Nebraska says students at Hastings College learned last week about the decision not to seek license renewal for the Class A facility. Journalism and Media Arts Director Chad Power says the factors include the low listenership to the student-programmed variety station, and fewer potential jobs in radio for grads. Hastings will continue to offer opportunities for podcasting and webcasting – but it won’t be doing any over-the-air broadcasting.

DANNY MACK MCWILLIAMS [GM KRNH FM Country (The Ranch 92.3)] (Kerrville, TX) Subject: Sad day. Jim, Having been the GM for The Ranch Radio Group, until just a couple of years ago, and though I did not know her, I was shocked and sadden by the news of the murder of the 96.5 Fox morning show host, Sherry Ruth Francis, in the parking lot of the station, in Kerrville, this morning. Sherry had only been with the station about one-month. This senseless killing, and what is being called a random act of violence, reminds us that even in rural America we cannot escape violence. When I was doing the morning show on 96.5 in the fall of 2013, I worried about snakes and skunks, not so much two legged predators. Her killer, who didn’t even know her, has been caught and is charged with murder. May she rest in peace and I pray for her family. Many broken hearts in radio, today. “Danny Mack” McWilliams

Last week I received an mp3 song, you know the usual hype from a promoter, who for sure had never previewed the song before sending out to who knows how many radio stations. I thought OK lets have a wee listen, well the start was OK then the singer ran out or rhythm and nothing rhymed so he reverted to a kind of spoken word until he got back on track, to be honest that’s the best way I can describe it.
How can a singer tout that to a promoter and expect him/her to be honest to DJ’s or does he/she just take the money and not give a damn knowing if he/she sends to five hundred radio stations some are going to play it and report it as being played. The said promoter then reports back to the singer and writer saying it went well, yeah right.
Many years ago I got hounded by a singer saying how his material was being played on umpteen radio stations, well I listened to a lot of his stuff, none of it improved. After many letters back and forth I told him he couldn’t sing. My name is now a naughty word in his vocabulary. The funny thing is I get emails from other DJ’s asking about my dealings with him, so I just tell them my opinion. For some reason I always get back mail agreeing with me.
I think a lot of singers and promoters should take a long hard look at the harm they are doing to Country music sending out rubbish ..

The Libertarian Party has a presidential candidate: former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson. In recent national polls, Johnson got about 10 percent in a three-way matchup against Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. That 10 percent likely reflects discontent with the main parties’ candidates as much as Johnson’s popularity. Now that Johnson’s the nominee, he’ll be on the ballot in all 50 states. – Aol
The Libertarian Party could play the spoiler role in 2016 for Donald Trump, just as Ralph Nader did in 2000, but this time helping to tip the election to the Democrat. The party has largely been ignored in previous cycles, but party leaders are hoping that this year might be different. Sarwark, a mild-mannered former attorney who now operates his family-owned used auto business in Phoenix, sees friendly terrain to blow up the established two-party system. – Sacret Heart
It was formerly known as Decoration Day and commemorates all men and women, who have died in military service for the United States. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day and it is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season.
What Do People Do?: It is traditional to fly the flag of the United States at half staff from dawn until noon. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials, particularly to honor those who have died in military service. Many volunteers place an American flag on each grave in national cemeteries. Memorial Day is combined with Jefferson Davis’ Birthday in Mississippi. Memorial Day has become less of an occasion of remembrance.
Many people choose to hold picnics, sports events and family gatherings on this weekend: This day is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season for cultural events. For the fashion conscious, it is seen as acceptable to wear white clothing, particularly shoes from Memorial Day until Labor Day. However, fewer and fewer people follow this rule and many wear white clothing throughout the year.
Public Life: Memorial Day is a federal holiday. All non-essential Government offices are closed, as are schools, businesses and other organizations. Most public transit systems do not run on their regular schedule. Many people see Memorial Day weekend as an opportunity to go on a short vacation or visit family or friends. This can cause some congestion on highways and at airports.
Background: Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers, who had died during the American Civil War. It was inspired by the way people in the Southern states honored their dead. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women, who died in any war or military action.
Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day:
The current name for this day did not come into use until after World War II. Decoration Day and then Memorial Day used to be held on May 30, regardless of the day of the week, on which it fell. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed as part of a move to use federal holidays to create three-day weekends. This meant that, from 1971, Memorial Day holiday has been officially observed on the last Monday in May. However, it took a longer period for all American states to recognize the new date.
Memorial Day is not to be confused with Veterans Day; Memorial Day is a day of remembering the men and women who died while serving, while Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans
