We don’t get many moments to share with a legend like Willie Nelson So many of music’s greatest legends have come and gone
The great Willie Nelson will perform at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip on Friday, Aug. 5 We don’t get many moments to share with a legend like Willie Nelson So many of music’s greatest legends have come and gone. In the world of country music, renegades who played by their own rules like Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard have all left a wave of musical memories in their wake. But one performer who dared to be different and led the movement is still entertaining and will be creating more magical memories at the Sturgis Buffalo Chip® this August. The great Willie Nelson will be giving Buffalo Chip guests a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as he jumpstarts the Chip’s 35th anniversary party. The living legend will kick-off the party on Friday, Aug. 5 with Drake White.
Nelson’s nearly endless portfolio of beloved music has been a soundtrack of his life as well as America’s. Songs like “Hello Walls,” “Crazy,” “Willingly,” “Bloody Mary Morning,” “Blues Eyes Cryin’ in the Rain,” “Mommas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to be Cowboys,” “Good Hearted Woman” and “If You’ve Got the Money, I’ve Got the Time” helped him earn a staggering 11 Grammy Awards, 7 American Music Awards, 9 CMA Awards, 5 Academy of Country Music Awards and many more. Willie Nelson is an 83 year-old American icon who has inspired generations with his talent and independent spirit. His appearance at the Buffalo Chip on Aug. 5 will offer a connection between the people who adore him and the legend who has championed their way of life and American values.
“We don’t get many moments to share with a legend like Willie Nelson,” said Buffalo Chip president Rod Woodruff. “He’s taken us all on one hell of a ride, and he always brings us back home.
This concert opportunity is one you’d kick yourself later for missing.” Prior to Willie Nelson’s performance, rising country musician Drake White will also make his way to the Buffalo Chip’s Wolfman Jack Stage. White’s debut Top 40 hit “The Simple Life” propelled him into the spotlight in 2013, and by the end of 2015 “Rolling Stone” said he was “an electric performer with a gospel howl” and “Huffington Post” hailed him as one of the top country artists to watch in 2016.
The list of celebrated musicians scheduled for the 35th anniversary of “The Best Party Anywhere®” continues to grow, with the lineup currently including the following acts: Friday, Aug. 5 – Willie Nelson, Drake White Saturday, Aug. 6 – 3 Doors Down Sunday, Aug. 7 – Kid Rock, Leon Russell Monday, Aug. 8 – Lynyrd Skynyrd, Elle King Wednesday, Aug 10 – Reverend Horton Heat Thursday, Aug. 11 – Miranda Lambert Saturday, Aug – “Weird Al” Yankovic More band announcements will be forthcoming until the Buffalo Chip’s 9-day festival schedule has been announced.

BEN HAROLD [ex KXOL-1360/KBUY-1540/WBAP-820/KENR-1070] (Knoxville, TN) Hi Jim, I just wanted to let JRRR readers (who have followed my turmoil over the last year or so) that my latest PET scan showed a “sparkle” where my original colon cancer had been. I’ve been about 9 months “free” and my oncologist’s nurse (who called Friday) indicates, although it has returned, it’s not substantial and he is considering additional “mop up” chemotherapy. He will be meeting with Becky and myself next week to go over all the results and options. I appreciate the kind words and prayers I received, previously, from my radio family at JRRR, so I kindly request additional prayers for this situation. I may be old, and beat to heck (from both broadcasting and the cancer), but this old dawg still has a LOT of fight left! Thank you all in advance. Ben Harold.

As it happens for us all the time…a simple night out turned “extra” special…no brag, just fact…last night Kendall and I went to a comedy show at the Improve and as fate has it we sat next to an astronaut…his name is Clayton Anderson…Google him if you like. TRIVIA ANSWER: On May 20, 1920 The Canadian Marconi Company’s XWA (Experimental Wireless Apparatus) in Montréal gives what it claims to be the first scheduled radio broadcast in North America, and quite possibly in the world.
JOAN PATE-DAY [late Sam Pate’s sister] (Cedar Creek Lake, TX) Subject: 61 years and holding. Come May 14 my Bill and I will be married 61 years. The night of our wedding all we could afford was a hamburger, fries and a Weber’s Root Beer. We made a vow to have that exact meal each year on our Anniversary. So far we have made it. This year was close as I had three heart attacks, one respiratory failure. The desire for that burger made me try harder to recover. My Bill worked for the railroad and in his off time drove the news unit with the letters across the top for K.L.I.F-1190.
SOCRATES (469-399 BC) My advice to you is to get married. If you find a good wife, you’ll be happy; if not, you’ll become a philosopher.

Some years ago our family visited Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. Known as the world’s longest cave system, there are more than 400 miles of caves waiting to be explored. We went on the Wild Cave Tour. I should have known by the name that this was probably a demanding exploration, but hey, the family was excited so I decided to be brave. This cave was all about facing the darkness. A Guide led our small group through some physically demanding areas of the cave. We had to climb, crawl, squeeze, and move through dark spaces where even the cave dwelling creatures (spiders, scorpions) were environmentally albino due to the lack of light. (Did I mention there were also bats?) I have to admit, I was very apprehensive, which is an adult way of saying, “I was freaking out!” I kept reminding myself that all I needed to do was keep my eyes on the Guide in front of me, trust the Guide watching the group from behind, and remember that when passages widened, I would be able to see my husband beside me again; and I was relieved.
Our Father in heaven promises us that we are never alone. He goes before us, behind us, and walks beside us along this journey we call life. “You have enclosed me behind and before, and laid Your hand upon me.” Psalm 139:5. When life overwhelms us and is seems like we are sinking into the dark confines of a cold, dreary cave, His Word reminds us that there is nowhere we can go that He is not there; loving and leading. When you are faced with life uncertainties and times of darkness, it is good to remember: The Lord goes before me: Deuteronomy 31:8 “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”
The Lord goes behind me: Isaiah 52:12 “But you will not leave in haste or go in flight; for the Lord will go before you, the God of Israel will be your rear guard.
The Lord stays beside me: Acts 2:25 “King David said this about him: ‘I see that the LORD is always with me. I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.”
Are you struggling today? Do you feel like you are overwhelmed in darkness, unable to see even inches in front of you? Cry out to Jesus. “For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.” 2 Corinthians 6:2
Prayer Thank You Father that I am never alone.
You will watch over me and keep my mind in perfect peace as I fix my eyes on You.
You uphold me and strengthen me according to Your Word; I simply need to take hold of Your hand.
Jesus, You are my Rock and my Salvation and it is in Your name, that I pray. Amen.
