Unemployment Worse Than When Apartheid Ended

SAfricaUnemploymentGraphic001Unemployment Worse Than When Apartheid Ended

We may have sunshine and wide skies, but man are we miserable as a country?

Unemployment rate In South Africa Higher Than In USA During The Great Depression

SAfricaUnemploymentGraphic002So glum that we are now the fifth-most-miserable nation in the world. The Cato Institute in the US has released its “misery index” for this year and South Africa has jumped to fifth position from 10th last year.

The reason for this is an unemployment rate that is higher than that in the US during the Great Depression. South Africa’s unemployment rate as of the last quarter of 2015 was 24.5%. That figure now stands at 26.7%.

“Unemployment in South Africa is worse now than it was when apartheid ended in 1994,” the study states.

Professor Darma Mahadea, at the School of Accounting, Economics and Finance at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, has studied the economics of happiness and believes that South Africans are not seeing too much joy and prospects for the future appear bleak for many.

“Money is a potential root to happiness, although too much of it can have a negative effect,” he said. “As people become tied to paying off debt and working long hours, they become more stressed and their health is affected.”But there is a bright side, No1 on the list is Venezuela, a country struggling with an inflation rate of 275%. But, unlike Venezuela, we don’t have shortages of beer and toilet paper.

JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ-560 PD/DJ] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Rundown of Wink’s Sinatra Special. Ain’t it the truth. Because of Wink’s being in Hollywood and having been named America’s favorite Disk Jockey a few times, he could call anybody and get an interview with them. Of course he saved the tapes on all of them, and has a huge collection. I told him in an email I sent yesterday that I wish I’d had as much access to famous people as he, but I didn’t. I did very few interviews because George Klein had a Talent Party TV show here, and he did many interviews on TV. We did indeed have lots of big names, but they were only passing thru or only in town to do a show or even do a session at one of the studios here…for instance, in the early sixties to early seventies, when Sun, Phillips, Fernwood, especially American and a few other studios were cutting worldwide hits constantly. I told Wink he was very smart to save the tapes…even some films of some of his work. BTW, when he was still in Memphis at WHBQ, he did a Top Ten Dance Party show, and was the first person in the world to interview Elvis on TV. Yep, he filmed it, and still has it on videotape. JP

JOHN WALTON [Walton & Johnson Show] (Houston, TX) Jim The very first voice on my new radio coming right out of Spring Little Cobra was “The Weird Beard”…Russ Knight…not a name you forget immediately when you’re 10. I listened many nights and remember being very disappointed one night when the Big 610 had the audacity to replace the Weird Beard with some other dude. I think it was Jimmy Rabbit or something like that…but I knew he could never replace a guy with a hip name like Weird Beard. Ten years later in Oklahoma City while attending OU I would be on the radio myself for the first time…I liked it so much I never quit. TOM ELLIS [Veteran WABC TV NYC & WBZ TV Boston, MA & KONO-860/KONO TV news anchor] (Boston-Cape Cod-East Sandwich, MA) Hi, Jim and Suzie, This was one of the COLDEST MAYS in the history of New England…and the sun came out late today after 8 straight days of rain and fog. Enjoy your A/C. My heat’s on and the furnace is burning. T

CARL REINER (March 20, 1922 – p) A lot of people like snow. I find it to be an unnecessary freezing of water.

Merle Haggard, ‘Kern River Blues’ His Final Song

MerleKernRiver

Merle Haggard‘s voice strains but remains resilient as he sings his final song, “Kern River Blues.”

The spirit of the Hag is still alive in this country ballad. “Kern River Blues” is a letter to his hometown, and not a love letter.

MerleHaggard006The feisty country legend shows his knack for weaving opinions on social change into song did not leave him late in life.

The arrangement is simple. A few guitars and a few horns provided a slow but reliable beat for Haggard to ride along. The focus is on his message, and his voice.

Any anger Haggard had for Bakersfield isn’t found here. It’s replaced with sadness, and a touch of contempt. Give credit to his production team for not trying to “protect” a singer past his prime with a lot of unnecessary noise. With “Kern River Blues,” some will hear a heartbreaking swan song, while others will hear just another Haggard song. Both are fine interpretations, as even though Haggard is gone, it’s important that his music never truly stops.

Did You Know?: Haggard is said to have written and recorded many songs during his final months. “Kern River Blues” was recorded on Feb. 9.

Rhonnie Scheuerman’s Inspiration Station For All In Need This Morning

You Can Find Joy In The Midst Of BrokennessJesus014

One of the hardest times to be joyful is when you’re dealing with multiple problems-seeking solutions but finding none-and then several new difficulties beset you. If you focus too much on finding solutions, you will sink under the weight of your problems. So it’s vital to remember that I am present with you in adversity. I am at work in your situation, and My matchless wisdom enables Me to bring good out of evil-ultimately outsmarting evil with good!

The way to find Joy in adversity is to encounter Me. You can pray, Jesus, help me find You in the midst of this mess! As you unplug your emotions from all the problems and plug them into My Presence, good things start to happen. Your dark mood grows steadily lighter and brighter. Also, as you remain in Me-plugged in to My Presence-I enable you to see things from My perspective. You can be joyful in the midst of brokenness by staying connected to Me.

My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. -James 1:2-3 nkjv

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! -Romans 11:33

Remain in me, and I will remain in you.

No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine.

Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. -John 15:4
