The Sea Is His, For He Made It…Psalm 95:5
Daddy, get out of the water! Benjamin’s voice whipped away in the wind. We were on the beach in Monterey, Cal. and Kate, Frances and I stood in the shallows, letting waves wash over our feet. Reluctantly , I returned to my three-year old. “It’s okay, Benji, I said; picking him up. “Come with me. I’ll show you.” “No” he screamed as I stepped toward the waves. I stopped and stood, undecided. At last I put him down. “Let’s pretend we’re tractors,” he said, vrooming his hand through the sand.
I gazed at the water. A huge breaker fell on itself with a boom. Something in the sound cast my memory back long ago. I remembered panic gripping my body when my mom, over my protests, carried me out into deeper water. She’d done it to accustom me to waves. All I remembered was a scary sense of the sea rising to snatch me away. I looked at Benjamin. He saw the world like that too—a looming place full of incomprehensible powers. I still saw the world like that sometimes. Maybe that’s one reason I prayed, one reason I leaned so hard on God. “Okay tractors” I said to my son. “We’ll stay right here and play tractors.” When I’m anxious I lean on You, Lord. You are always faithful…..Jim
