MOONVES WANTS TO SPIN OFF CBS RADIO CBS CEO Les Moonves tells XEPRS (The Mighty 1090) talk personality Dan Sileo that radio is a slow-growth business compared to video. Les says he’s bullish on the ability of CBS Radio’s 117 stations to function as a great stand-alone company. Is this a hint that CBS will expunge itself from its long time radio interests? Moonves tells Sileo that the current business is a world for us that is keyed in video. Radio is still a wonderful, wonderful business. So our intent is to spin off radio.
VIACOM SLASHES REDSTONE’S PAY Viacom reduces its 92-year-old Executive Chairman Sumner Redstone’s total pay by 85 percent to $2 million in light of his reduced responsibilities. Viacom increases Chief Executive Philippe Dauman’s total compensation to $54.2 million for the fiscal year ending September 30, 2015, up from $44.3 million. A recent lawsuit claims that Viacom and CBS Corp, where Redstone is also executive chairman, improperly pays millions for his services even though he is incapacitated.

DERRILL E. HOLLY [Sr Writer-Editor, Electric Co-op Today, National Rural Electric Cooperative, ex KIKK FM] (Arlington, VA/Washington, DC) Jim, many of us have friends who have been battered, disrespected and assaulted by ClearChannel/iHeart over the years. Radio was a business filled with friendly, good natured people who loved their craft and for the most part only wanted to entertain and inform audiences. Nice people deserved much better treatment. The end of iHeart Media may not save radio, but in many ways for an industry we once loved it will be like the dawning of a new day and a chance at real recovery.

JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ-560 PD/DJ] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Coming attractions. Glad you like it, Jim. The shooters are gonna have a heckuva day today; the heavy rain is most likely dragging them down. I’m glad I didn’t go to the set…it was scheduled for a motorcycle escapade downtown with Elvis and his girlfriend Trixie today…hope they have some indoor shoots to work on! JP

BILL CHERRY [Realtor, In late 1950s Music ’til Dawn host on WWL-870] (Dallas, TX) Jack Davis is an old time DJ in the Dallas market. There is what I think is a screwed up AM station, KAAM, that I believe is primarily surly because they run paid programs of cancer doctors, fake medicine men, financial advisors (at least one of whom doesn’t know his butt from first base, and has lost his securities and his insurance licenses) who tend to prey on the elderly. In their defense, there are also some good advertorials. Nevertheless, Jack is on the morning shift. Apparently management leaves him alone. He does a remarkably good job. If you think about it, tune him in sometime. 770.
TRIVIA ANSWER: On April 7, 1958, the Capitol records label officially stops issuing 78 rpm records.
CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Moving On. I see that the founder of ETWN, Mother Mary Angelica passed away on Easter. I use to listen occasionally to ETWN on shortwave. I also found out that Don Wolff who did a jazz Show on KMOX passed away on Nov 22. He was a Criminal Defense Attorney, I once wrote a letter to KMOX to request a song and he sent me back a letter telling me when he would play the song on his show. I was running some errands today and fell on the sidewalk, since it changed contours. Anyway a teen happened by and goes you need help, no just need to get up. He was a black guy, so I thought why is it we only hear bad a person’s rather than the good they do. Like in Politics we hear them deriving their opposition without saying how they would do things differently if at all. I found my leg it only hurts when I am getting up and down from certain chairs. Walking seems to be no problem. The problems of getting older. I just watched an older movie with Michael Keaton, The Paper. I like that he can do both Dramatic and Comedy, Charles George
GEORGE BURNS (January 20, 1896 – March 9, 1996 ) You can’t help getting older, but you don’t have to get old.
